~ Meta Knight explaining the Mumbies in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Mumbies Madness. |
A Mumbies makes its appearance in the eighty-fourth episode of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Mumbies Madness, as its titular main antagonist. King Dedede tricks Professor Curio, a Cappy archaeologist, into digging up an urn containing the Mumbies.
Later, Tuff, Spikehead, and Iro investigate Curio's antique shop and find him brewing a strange substance while also finding a book there. Tuff shows his sister Tiff the book and she reads that whoever finds Mumbies becomes rich. He also tells her that he found Curio brewing something. They are initially led to believe that he's feeding the Mumbies, but once its urn gets knocked over and it wakes up again, they learn the truth from Meta Knight: Dedede secretly wrote the book to fool the Cappies, and the Mumbies are in fact dangerous monsters sent throughout the universe to hunt down and kill Star Warriors, being automatically unsealed once dug up.
The Mumbies attacks Kirby once more, and Kirby is put on the ropes as it blocks off his escape routes and hypnotizes him, and Kirby is unable to gain any copy abilities when he inhales it. Just then, King Dedede sabotages its imminent near-victory when he wraps up a bomb in bandages and throws it, giving Kirby the opportunity to inhale it and become Bomb Kirby. Even so, and even when Tiff summons the Warp Star, Kirby is struggling as the Mumbies dodges every one of his bombs and bites him, but once again its assassination attempt is interrupted by the rising sun. This gives Kirby the idea to keep holding on to it to prevent its escape, and lets it burn up in the sun's rays, securing his victory as it turns to dust. King Dedede muses about Kirby's victory and throws a tantrum while Escargoon asks whose fault it was, while Meta Knight remarks that there are more Mumbies out there, but this one has been taken care of, and Kirby drifts off into some well-deserved rest.
The Mumbies in the anime is a tricky monster that puts up a better fight than its video game brethren. It is considered one of the toughest monsters that Kirby fought, as it constantly put Kirby on the ropes during its episode appearance before he finally took it down. Its weakness is shown to be sunlight in the anime, giving it somewhat vampiric qualities. Since the Mumbies are against Star Warriors, it is possible that they were created by Nightmare Enterprises.
Trivia[]
- Curiously, a Mumbies exists in Castle Lololo in Kirby's Dream Land that can be inhaled. It is unknown what the reason for this is. The same can be said for Skuller as well.
- From game to game, the Mumbies' eye color can alternate between yellow and red. The anime possibly explains this fact, as it was shown to be able to glow its eyes blue there.
- The Prima official strategy guide for Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards contains an error; it says that Mumbies can only be inhaled and is immune to all other attacks. The opposite is true, as while Mumbies can be harmed by other attacks, but cannot truly be inhaled. Another error in the same guide refers to Adeleine's painting of Dark Matter's second form as a mutant Mumbie.
