~ Mummy threatening intruders. |
Mummies (also referred to in-game as "Disturbed Dead") are minor antagonists in the indie management simulation game Dwarf Fortress. They are undead, deceased rulers that act as hostile creatures if discovered and disturbed inside their tombs. They are one of the night creatures.
In some circumstances, it's possible to befriend mummies as allies. They are only encountered in "Adventure Mode", and do not normally appear in "Fortress Mode" unless the player embarks right on top of a tomb. They were once important rulers an unknown time before the events of the main game. Every tomb has a slumbering mummy inside it, and will angrily curse the player if this slumber is disturbed. Mummies retain their soul, and therefore their intelligence, attributes and skills.
Mummies are one of the most powerful humanoid entities in the game, only to be rivaled by necromancers. This is because both creatures can resurrect the dead and summon entities into reality to fight for them, with no limit to this power. Mummies are also heavily resilient due to their undead nature. They are also the only type of night creature that do not actively seek out their enemies unless disturbed, due to their preference of slumbering.
Due to the procedural generation of the world in the game, coupled with the fact that many elements can be customized by the player, the strength, surrounding circumstances and placement of mummies vary greatly. A villainous historical figure can also be a mummy.
History[]
Though each mummy was once a ruler in a time before the events of the game, the exact history of the mummies is never greatly touched upon, though it is possible to see what their profession was before death. How and why some individuals became mummies is also never revealed to the player, but it is possible that one or more deities in their creation.
It is possible that being a mummy is a curse, as people who offend a deity they were worshiping can be cursed with conditions such as becoming a werebeast or vampire. It is also possible that some sort of unknown ritual was responsible for mummies being created, keeping the soul inside the undead body.
Gameplay[]
In the original version of the game, or if classic ASCII graphics are enabled in the premium version, mummies are represented by a dark yellow "Ñ" in gameplay. In the premium version, they appear as a yellow-skinned humanoid.
Unlike most other enemies in the game, mummies do not seek out players nor their civilization or fortress to attack them. Instead, mummies are always slumbering in their own respective tombs. They will only become hostile once the player is caught stealing any valuables in said tombs. Once a player is caught, a mummy will say the following:
"Who dares to enter my house? I curse you!"
After this, a mummy places a curse on the player, which greatly reduces the player's luck. While cursed, 20% of the time, events for the player such as enemy attacks will go as bad as they can possibly go.
Tombs can be found under fortresses, towns and temples. When tombs are made through world generation, the mummy will always be nearby other corpses it can resurrect and command once the player is caught intruding. Mummies will reanimate intelligent undead historical figures of the past, which will be very skilled and extremely powerful fighters, as they retain their soul, personality and attributes on top of receiving the strength and toughness bonuses that standard undead get. A mummy will relentlessly follow you around the world if you manage to escape with its stolen goods, so it's best to deal with the mummy and his minions before moving.
Actions such as loudly bashing doors, stealing items and triggering traps will alert the mummy. This includes walking around instead of attempting to sneak. Because mummies are undead creatures, only bisection or decapitation will kill them for good. If the player is a night creature and/or undead themselves, they can speak to and befriend mummies, making them potential allies.
