“ | Your father's homeland, where Mundus, the king who had your family murdered, still rules. Fitting fate's dark humor, it was Mundus who gained the most from Sparda's war. It has allowed him to bleed dry a captive, terrorized populace, while she and the rest of her DARKCOM barbarians ensure paradise stays sealed off for their own kind. They and Mundus are two sides of the same, bloodstained coin! | „ |

~ Vergil describing Mundus. |
King Mundus is the overarching antagonist of Netflix's 2025 animated action fantasy series Devil May Cry. He is based on the character of the same name from the video games.
He is the cruel and tyrannical ruler of the demon world Makai, who keeps his subjects in a perpetual state of oppression and suffering in order to secure his reign. He is also the master of Vergil and the archenemy of the Dark Knight Sparda.
Biography[]
Past[]
Mundus' origins are unknown. All that is known about his past is that he ascended to become the ruler of Makai, at which point he enacted a cruel regime founded on slavery. During his reign, Mundus allowed Makai atmosphere to deteriorate into a toxic state, making it nearly uninhabitable even for the demons residing there.
Eventually, Mundus was betrayed by his right-hand, Sparda, who rebelled against his forces and escaped to Earth. There, Sparda used a magical amulet to create a barrier to seal off the portal between Earth and Makai, with the amulet being split in half and gifted to Sparda's two half-human sons, Dante and Vergil.
Unfortunately, Sparda's actions led to many larger demons being unable to escape from Mundus' tyranny, thus further strengthening his grip on Makai. Eventually, Mundus sent his smaller demons to retrieve Sparda's keys from Dante and Vergil. The demons murdered Sparda's human wife, Eva, and abducted Vergil along with his half of the amulet. Dante, however, was never found.
Vergil grew up to become a servant of Mundus as the demon knight Nelo Angelo, while a rebellion led by the White Rabbit began to stir.
Season 1[]
Mundus remains absent from the first season. However, his influence can be felt, as Dante remains traumatized from the murder of his mother and White Rabbit's actions are in response to Mundus' oppression.
At the end of the season, VP Baines launches an attack on Makai, during which he slaughters and captures any demons in his path. Seeing an opportunity to gain the loyalty of his subjects, Mundus sends Vergil to Earth to break the demons free and convince them to join his army.
