“ | By the way, about mutants: Also, rare crap, Zone's "children", so without a gun it’s better not to walk | „ |
~ Sidorovich |
Mutants (Rus. Мутанты; Uk. Мутанти) are supporting antagonists in the Ukrainian FPS Survival Horror franchise S.T.A.L.K.E.R..
Mutants are the mutated animal world of the Zone. Quite diverse, consisting of animals, humanoids and, most likely, hybrids. The stalkers only know one harmless Mutate and it's Crows and, Rats, most of the time. Stalkers consider various mutants' parts a valuable, usually for scientific reasons but, also for their flavor
Overview[]
Zone's impact incredibly speeds up the evolutionary adaptation of species. The known Mutants have developed in a matter of years, that's one, at most two generations. Equally important, than the influence of the Zone itself, is the genetic experiments that may or may not had happen in the, now abandoned laboratories. However, experienced stalkers pointed: No matter how amazing the adaptability of the mutated creatures to the Zone's environment, no animal have absolute defense from bullets. Some mutants are active at nighttime while other at daylight
Origin[]
In simple terms, we can divide mutants into three categories:
- Mutants who appeared due to the environment
- Mutants who were created by experiments
- Mutants whose origin is unclear
Mutants from the first group saved their appearance and genetics from their ancestries. For example, the Blind Dog is obviously a dog. The same with Boars. Crows and Rats didn't change at all. On the other hand, Flesh although unrecognizable but still a regular pig. Pseudodog's ancestry is a regular wolf.
Bloodsucker, Burer, Chimera, Poltergeist, Pseudogaint and Controller are a result of C-Consciousness experiments. For instance: Burer is a result of developing telekinetic abilities in humans and Controller is a result of developing telepathic abilities. Chimera and Pseudogaint are a result of DNA crossing between a human and an unknown animal
But the study of the origin of some other organisms is being fought unsuccessfully by Scientists. For example, whether Snork is a result of experiments(Which would've explained the large number of them inside X-Laboratories and their superhuman abilities) or just gone feral Zombie or perhaps Izlom — another test subject or just a mutated person.
Mutants[]
Animals[]
Crows And Rats[]
“ | The only bird species to have survived in the Zone, enduring increased radiation levels and effectively avoiding anomalies. While the army pilots need to rely on complex detectors to avoid gravitational disturbances, the crow seems to rely on its own senses for that - a mystery that drives ornithologists and biologists mad. Various theories attempting to explain the phenomenon exist, all of them pointing to a highly specialized development of the bird's brain. | „ |
~ Crow's PDA description |
“ | Many animals have had to mutate to regain the right to live from the Zone. But the grey rats are already brilliant masters of survival - they are true masters of the Zone, not her children. Radiation and anomalies have hardly affected rat physiology, but forced them to learn to recognize new dangers. All scientists studying the biology of the Zone agree that rats have adapted perfectly to new conditions. It is hard to imagine a more adapted organism. Because the large number of offspring and rapid natural selection allow rats to adapt in the harshest conditions | „ |
~ Rats in the Encyclopedia |
The only animals who adapted to the Zone's environment and didn't mutated. Absolutely harmless.
- Crows: Always roam the sky in big flocks. Sometimes eat torn corpses. Huge number of the die during emissions. Stalkers usually shoot them as a way of entertainment
- Rats: Live in huge numbers in underground facilities. It's rare to see to see them by themselves. They are omnivores but, usually eat carrion. Stalkers sometimes use them as food
Blind Dog[]
“ | Lone canines aren't that dangerous, but packs of them are a real pain in the ass. They only attack if they're hungry... the bad thing is, they're almost always hungry. If you're up against a whole pack, try to pick them off from a high spot, else they'll just run you over. | „ |
~ Gonta |
The most familiar representative of the Zone's fauna. Flocks of these creatures can be found anywhere except for entirely deadly places. They're one of the weakest mutants out there. However, a big pack can cause troubles. Due to the similarities and natural connection often hunt with pseudodogs. They prefer wandering around and not settle down. However, sometimes they do settle down, but it happens rare. Their tail can be sold, but considered a "useless" item between stalkers[1]
Blind Dogs has three Types:
- Wild Dog: Reddish-brown color. The most common one
- Dog-Rat Catcher: A long neck and a earthy body. Rat Catchers are much rarer than Wild Dogs and often the pack's leader
- Dog-Albinos: Lack of pigmentation, and as a result, white wool. Exceptionally rare
Pseudodog[]
“ | Despite the name, the pseudodogs evolved directly from wolves. The animals inhabiting the forests at the time of the catastrophe gave rise to one of the Zone's most dangerous mutant species. Pseudodogs are about as different from mutant dogs as wild wolves differ from poodles. The creatures mark and guard their territory carefully, attacking anyone stupid enough to venture onto their land on sight. Lightning-fast reflexes, uncanny dexterity and razor-sharp teeth make the pseudodog a formidable enemy for large mutants and well-armed stalkers. | „ |
~ PDA description |
Mutants that can be found all over the Zone. They're found individually and in groups. Alone they attack every mutants smaller than them and run from the bigger ones, but in groups they attack everyone who trespass their territory. There are cases of domestication of them by stalkers: In Shadow Of Chernobyl, Doctor has a pseudodog whose name is unknown[2]. In Call Of Pripyat, Noah has a dog named Lassie, who, if the player won't kill them, will give birth to another domesticate pseudodogs. Their tail, unlike the Blind Dog's one does has value and even quests about acquiring them
“ | If one suddenly turns into a whole pack, then remember: you’re being attacked by phantoms. The real pseudodog will hang back and only try to bite you now and again... Try to identify it. As soon as the real dog is dead, the phantoms will simply disappear. | „ |
~ Gonta |
Psy-Dog: Is a rare type of Pseudodog and, simultaneously the rarest mutant in the series. They Psy-Dog uses psychological warfare to toy with the unfortunate stalker's mind, giving him illusions of a whole pack, while the real one waits for the right time
Rodent/Hamster[]
“ | The worst thing you can do is underestimate them because of their small size. | „ |
~ Gonta |
A small rat-like creature that walks on two of their paws. Reside in underground facilities, rarely comes out
Flesh[]
“ | Like most other living creatures in the Zone, the domestic pig also underwent serious biological changes since the day of the catastrophe. It seems the genes responsible for metabolism were especially affected in this case. Mutant pigs, known simply as Flesh among the stalkers, are one of the most vivid examples of the Zone's disastrous perversion of nature. Mutant pigs developed a protective layer of scales and exoskeletal plates. Their regeneration potential increased several times, as did the complexity of their nervous system. Just like a normal pig, a Flesh is an omnivore and may attack a stalker if hungry. | „ |
~ PDA description |
An mutated to an unrecognizable form, pig, one of the most harmless mutants, Live in small packs, behave non-aggressively but if in danger, can defend themselves. Often graze with Boars. Flesh is most likely a eatable mutant, particularly their eye, that caught interests of both scientists and regular stalkers, who consider their eye as a unique delicacy
Fleshes has three types, who aren't really different from one another: Steppe Flesh and Forest Flesh visually similar, only place of resides is different, which cannot be said about the Swamp Flesh: Easily recognizable from their toned color and blisters on their face
Boar[]
“ | A brute of three hundred kilo isn't a joke! | „ |
~ Gonta |
Unlike Flesh didn't change that much. However, significantly increased in size. Depending on the region may have difference in appearance but the habits remains the same. Boar's beef, although bit radioactive(Boars can survive huge doses of radiation), which stalkers often use. Boar's hoof is a trophy that can be acquired, can be sold to the scientists for studying, to Barman for smuggling or to Freedom for dinner
Humanoids[]
Snork[]
“ | Remnants of humans... | „ |
~ Gonta |
Snork just like Pseudogaint is a mystery. Completely gone insane humans that live a animalistic life and not very different from other of the Zone's creatures. Snorks sedentary animals. Meet a large pack roaming the Zone is near-impossibly, usually sole or small pack of 2-3 creatures. Snork foot have a scientific value
- Snork-Man-Eater: A rare, stronger subtype of Snorks'. As the name suggest, prefer human flesh
- Snork-Scavenger: A even more rare subtype of Snorks'. As the name suggest, prefer not to fight and wait till over
Bloodsucker[]
“ | They're expert hunters themselves | „ |
~ Gonta |
Bloodsucker is a night creature, as the name suggest, prefer humans over anything. Mainly live alone, rarely hunt together, but, there are cases of "nests". Despite being called "hunters", they don't really hunt, since they long-termly live in one place, attacking everything that enters. Bloodsucker tentacles is considered a valuably object from medical perspective
Bloodsucker has a two subtypes: Underground Bloodsucker, that Inhabits damp tunnels and abandoned laboratories. The distinctive feature of this species is the blue wool and the Marsh Creature: A rare stronger subtype. They are much stronger than regular ones and seemingly, smarter and more sophisticate
“ | So far, nobody who got caught by the Marsh Creature could survive and tell what happens to the victim afterwards | „ |
Controller[]
“ | They use your own mind against you | „ |
~ Zveroboy |
A very dangerous rare mutant that was created through genetic experiments. He posses high telepathic abilities, the destruction of the brain is almost always irreversible. Unlike other mutants can use others for his own benefit. Controller has two subtypes that aren't really different from each other: Tunnel Controller, can attack from smaller distances; Underground Controller, except for his particular design and place of inhabiting isn't different from the regular ones
Burer[]
“ | When at close proximity they'll throw you and when they're far away they'll try to throw something at you... | „ |
~ Zveroboy |
Another result of genetic explements but this time of telekinesis. Burer at close distances can snap a stalker's weapon(Even a knife). They're very bad at hiding their presences, they speak loudly and their footstep are loud. Prefers to eat bodies
Poltergeist[]
“ | The first type sends items crashing into the enemy using gravitation | „ |
~ Zveroboy |
One of the most mythical creatures in the Zone, encountered only in her depths. From afar look like a translucent burst of energy. Always circles their territory. Upon encounter an enemy they throw heavy stuff at them, usually crates and barrels.
“ | While the second type is the fire poltergeist that uses flames to burn its victims | „ |
~ Zveroboy |
- Pyrogeist: A very rare subtype of Poltergeists. Inhabits only underground labs. From afar looks like area of hot air with rare sparks. They attack by creating small local fire anomalies in attempt to burn the player. Unlike his brother won't left a body after his death
Unknown[]
Chimera[]
“ | If you know there's a chimera around, keep checking your back and cover your friends' asses... | „ |
~ Zveroboy |
They prefer hunting at nighttime, in thee day they rest in their nest. The most durable mutants in the zone, can be killed instantly only from explosion. Seems to be a DNA-crossing between a human and an unknown animal
Pseudogaint[]
“ | Just remember that Pseudogiant attacks can detach anything that's not been fixed to concrete | „ |
~ Zveroboy |
The strongest and one of the rarest mutants in the Zone. Stronger and durable but stupid, mindlessly attack everything they see. Absolutely hates humans, doesn't back up even under rain of bullets. His hatred towards humans is probably a result of experiments made on him when he himself still was human
Powers & Skills[]
Mutants posses a variety of different abilities from animalistic ones like teethes and claws to supernatural ones such as telekinesis and telepathy.
