Mutoids

The Mutoids are an antagonistic faction in Blake's 7, a subgroup of the Terran Federation. They appear in all four seasons, although only as uncredited non-speaking characters in seasons three and four.

History[]

The Mutoids were individuals who had undergone a high degree of bionic replacement, used as troops by the Federation. The process had granted them super-human strength and a higher resistance to cold than other humans but left them dependent on a substance similar to blood plasma for sustenance. This was mostly received in capsules implanted into their chests, although they were also equipped with a needle with which they could extract blood directly from humans or animals. They had no knowledge of their lives prior to modification and apparently no interest in it, believing no records were kept. One Mutoid, formerly known as Keera, stated they existed only to serve.

Travis displayed a preference for using Mutoids, feeling an affinity with them after his own body underwent a partial rebuild; however, although he preferred their company, he generally considered them expandable in his quest of hunting Roj Blake. Conversely, Ven Jarvik deliberately used Mutoids for a suicide attack on the Liberator, saying he wouldn't allow real men to die. Mutoids were often used to crew pursuit ships, under the command of an unmodified officer, and as technicians, bodyguards and ground shock troops. It was Mutoids who carried out the massacres of the rebel groups serving Avalon and Kasabi. Most of the Mutoids seen were female, although a male Mutoid was seen among Travis' crew and others worked for him during Project Avalon. Although they were generally loyal to the Federation, when Travis went rogue, Servalan was able to supply him with a crew of Mutoids conditioned to obey him.

Season 4 Mutoids

Servalan with Mutoids on Bucol-2

Following her assumption of the presidency, Servalan used Mutoids to crew her command ship and also had one as an aide. During her later period using the identity of Commissioner Sleer, she took a group of Mutoids with her on the mission to Bucol-2, who were notably different from previous versions, wearing face masks and metallic blonde wigs. These may have been weaker than the normal type, since they were easily defeated in a short battle with the Scorpio crew.
