“ | Hello! I am Quentin Beck. Master illusionist. And this Betsy, my business partner, and Cole, my technical advisor, and THIS--is the next generation of entertainment. | „ |
~ Quentin's introduction in Coney Island. |
“ | Mysterio will always be a villain. Just as Spider-Man will always be a hero. It's when you start looking at the people behind the masks that things get messy. | „ |
~ Quentin's final words to Miles Morales, before disappearing. |
Quentin Beck, better known as Mysterio is a minor character in Marvel's Spider-Man and Insomniac Games 2. He is a former actor and an illusionist that served as one of Spider-Man's oldest foes.
At some point, he had given up his ways of villainy and put together an amusement park named Mysterium with his associates, Betsy Schneider and Cole Wittman. However, they had abducted him and sabotaged his exhibits with scams in an attempt to make money. They attempted to frame Quentin for their crimes, but failed when Spider-Man discovered their plans, allowing them to be arrested while in turn Quentin was allowed to be free.
He is voiced by Noshir Dalal, who also voiced Bode Akuna in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Indra in Record of Ragnarok, Rain in Mortal Kombat 1, Charles Smith in Red Dead Redemption 2, and Vice Admiral Rampart in Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
Personality[]
Like many of Spider-Man's long time foes, Quentin was a supervillain motivated by his own selfish desires that allowed him to commit crimes that he would later regret in his life. In particular, he was interested in the fame and attention it would bring him. However, after years of battling with Spider-Man, he eventually came to see the error of his ways and sought out to reform himself by putting together an amusement theme park for the public to enjoy and recognize his work.
Despite this, his business partners, Betsy and Cole, have noted him to be extremely difficult to work with, due to his egotism and boastful demeanour. In fact, part of the reason why they abducted him was to ensure he did not take more credit over the Mysterium branding than necessary.
Even after finding his new path of redemption, however, Quentin still felt heavily burdened by his past actions as Mysterio and while Miles suggested that he could try to be a hero, Quentin believed no matter what he does, Mysterio would always be remembered as a villain. For this very reason, he detests the name Mysterio so much that he refuses to be associated with it in any way.
History[]
Past[]
Quentin Beck was a former visual effects artist and an actor that later became the supervillain Mysterio, bringing him in conflict with Spider-Man. At some point, he had written a book titled Work/Balance for Idiots under the name Dr. Ludwig Rinehart, which Peter acquired later on. He eventually gave up on his criminal ways and sought out to atone for his actions.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]
As a means of atone, Quentin put together a VR development studio in Coney Island named Mysterium, with the help of business partners, Betsy Schneider and Cole Wittman. He offered Miles Morales to try it out, but a glitch in the system caused Quentin to close the attraction for maintenance. Quentin and his partners discovered that someone was implementing a "virus" taking on the form of Mysterio and was withholding hostages in different locations.
Miles assisted helping them out by destroying the virus and saving the hostages. Miles later arrived to the Mysterium when he received a message from Quentin to discuss with him there. From there, he confronts Quentin who supposedly has taken on the Mysterio mantle once more and begins to battle Miles.
However, after Miles defeats Mysterio, he discovers that Betsy and Cole were responsible for the virus attacks in order to make profit off of the people they captured, and that they kept Quentin hostage when he began to suspect they were up to something, leading to their arrest.
Miles briefly talks with Quentin, asking him if he could spread the word that Mysterio is now a good guy but Quentin protests, telling him no matter what he does, Mysterio would always be remembered as the villain, while Spider-Man will be remembered as the hero. He then tells Miles that only when you start looking at people behind their masks do things begin to get messy, before disappearing elsewhere.
