Mysterio (Raimiverse game adaptations)

Quentin Beck, better known as Mysterio, is a major antagonist in the 2004 video game Spider-Man 2, an adaptation of the eponymous superhero film.

He is a special effects guy from Hollywood who wants to prove that Spider-Man is a fraud by defeating him in a sports competition, after he loses, he becomes Mysterio to get revenge.

He was voiced by James Arnold Taylor (who also voiced Hydro-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man, The Leader in Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Magneto in Marvel Rivals, Mithos Yggdrasill in Tales of Symphonia, Overload in Teen Titans, Cypher in Beware the Batman, Captain Cold in Justice League: The New Frontier and Glorious Godfrey in Young Justice) in the PlayStation 2/Xbox/Nintendo GameCube/PlayStation Portable/Nintendo DS versions, and by Dee Bradley Baker in the PC version.

Biography[]

Quentin Beck was originally a special effects designer who worked for Hollywood, though he did a lot of work he wasn't incredibly well known. Due to this, Beck grows extremely jealous of Spider-Man and wants to prove that Spider-Man isn't the great hero everyone made him out to be. He had Spider-Man go through an intricate obstacle course, which Spider-Man agreed to, and Spider-Man ended up completing all the obstacles with very little effort. Beck was infuriated and tried to destroy Spider-Man with a cannon, but the machine failed before he could even fire it, Spider-Man told Beck to stick with special effects causing Beck to resent Spider-Man even further.

Later on, Beck has a news conference, and he reveals himself as Mysterio to the reporters then the reporters laugh at him, then Mysterio gets mad and orders his drones to kill the reporters. When Spider-Man gets to the news conference, Mysterio introduces himself to Spider-Man; after Spider-Man defeats Mysterio's drones and saves the reporters, Mysterio tells Spider-Man that him that his armada is advancing on his city, and that thier first target will be the Statue of Liberty. Spider-Man then makes it to the Statue of Liberty which is replaced with a Mysterio statue and a shield and a brain being the source of it, after Spider-Man destroys the orbs, he destroys the brain, the Statue of Liberty is restored. Mysterio then tells Spider-Man to come to his hidden fortress so he can defeat Spider-Man once and for all, Spider-Man gets to his hidden fortress, which looks like an apartment. Spider-Man then finds a hidden door sealed by a bookcase, which reveals an elevator; Spider-man then goes inside the elevator, but it falls; Mysterio introduces Spider-Man to his Funhouse of Doom, then introduces his friend, Mr. Hopping Act; Spider-Man then defeats him.

Spider-Man goes inside the clown's mouth to a room which looks like a mansion room Mysterio then flips the room upside down with 3 more Hopping Acts for Spider-Man to deal with; Spider-Man then defeats them. The place then flips back to its normal state, Spider-Man then jumps down into a room of strange mirrors, and his reflections then come out of the mirrors. Spider-Man then destroys all of the mirrors and finds a secret exit in one of them; he seems to have found Mysterio, but it turns out to be another hologram. Mysterio then tells Spider-Man that they will meet again, Mysterio's robots are on the loose terrorizing the citizens, even making Spider-Man late for Doctor Connors' class. Later on, Mysterio appears again, robbing the Speedy Mart, but Spider-Man appears to stop him, and Mysterio prepares to fight Spider-Man. However, Spider-Man knocks him out with one hit, Mysterio's helmet comes off, Mysterio is revealed to be Quentin Beck and Quentin Beck surrenders; Spider-Man then takes a picture of him for the Daily Bugle, then webs him and leaves him for the police.

Trivia[]

He is the only villain outside of Doctor Octopus to appear in every version of the game.
His boss fights in the PC/PSP/DS/N-Gage/GBA versions of the game are very different than his boss fight in the PS2/Xbox/GameCube versions of the game, in those versions, he can actually put up a fight against Spider-Man unlike in the main console versions where he would just taunt Spider-Man and one hit defeats him.
Bruce Campbell would have played Mysterio in Spider-Man 4, which would explain why he is a different character in all 3 movies, the theatre usher in Spider-Man 2 even alludes to it when he says "I'm sorry sir, no one will be seated after the doors are closed, it helps maintain the illusion", and illusions are Mysterio's main gimmick, so Mysterio is possibly a canon character to the movies after all.
