Quentin Beck, best known as Mysterio, is a supporting antagonist in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. He is a former special effects artist who spent a year in prison for endangering the cast on the set of a movie, and now wants to destroy Spider-Man for getting him arrested.

He was voiced by Gregg Berger.

Biography[]

In the past, Quentin Beck was the special effects man for a car chase movie on the Brooklyn Bridge. The film crew was filming a scene with sequential explosions; Beck used a mortar in order to get a bigger explosion without a permit, damaging a helicopter's rotor and causing it to crash. While Spider-Man was there to thankfully save the pilot, Miranda Wilson, the main actress for the movie, had her face deformed after falling off the bridge, forcing her into hiding underground. Spider-Man incapacitated Beck afterwards, and Beck swore revenge before spending a year in prison for reckless endangerment. Upon being released from prison, Beck then became the supervillain Mysterio, performing a series of robberies while dressed as Spider-Man to frame him. After kidnapping J. Jonah Jameson and Detective Terri Lee, Mysterio is defeated and sent back to prison by Spider-Man after putting him through an obstacle course of robotics and illusions at Wonder Studios.

Later on, Mysterio (alongside Chameleon, Rhino, Scorpion, Shocker and Dr. Octopus) breaks out of prison with the help of Kingpin, and thus the Insidious Six was founded. Despite defeating and even unmasking Spider-Man for a short time, the Six soon disband when tensions rise within the group. Eventually, Mysterio found a dying Miranda Wilson in the catacombs beneath Wonder Studios, hooking her to life support machines and illusory devices, and even forming a genuine romance with her. From that point on, Mysterio gave up on his petty grudge towards Spider-Man and instead devoted his criminal career to protecting Miranda, stealing the money and buying robotic machinery needed to save her life. During this time, Miranda mistakenly presumed the machines would be able to transfer her mind into a new body so she could beautiful again, kidnapping Mary Jane Watson for that exact purpose. While stealing recovered treasure from a pirate masquerade fundraiser, Mysterio is once again defeated by Spider-Man and sent back to prison for the third time, only to then later perform a quick, successful jailbreak with a holocube, using the battery from a Spider-Tracer to power it up. Afterwards, in the catacombs beneath Wonder Studios, Mysterio forms an unlikely team up with Spider-Man in order to save Mary Jane, defeating automatons that Mysterio designed to mimic Spider-Man's most powerful foes.

Upon discovering that Mysterio led her on with false hope of a new body, Miranda activates the self-destruct sequence to blow up the catacombs beneath Wonder Studios, choosing to commit suicide instead of remaining an ugly cyborg forever. While Spider-Man and Mary Jane flee the complex, Mysterio chooses to stay by Miranda's side so they can always be together, even in death. After Mysterio died, Kingpin replaced him with Vulture while reforming the Insidious Six.

Trivia[]

If the series had continued for a sixth season, Mysterio would have been revealed to be alive and have Time Dilation Accelerator, which would have caused him to meet and become a servant for Dormammu.
The DVD, Spider-Man: The Return of the Green Goblin, contained a game titled "The Rogues' Challenge" that Mysterio was responsible for the death of Daredevi's girlfriend. This did not happen in the show, it happened in a comic, Guardian Devil. The other two questions about him are about how he imitated Spider-Man in his first appearance and how Vulture replaced him.
