~ Mystique to the X-Men.
“
I am a shapeshifter, an outcast. Even among mutants, trusted by no one. I don't have a life of my own, I just still little bits from other people's lives. But that's how I survive.

~ Mystique describing herself.
Raven Darkholme, better known as Mystique, is a recurring antagonist in X-Men: The Animated Series, serving as a secondary antagonist in the latter half of season 1. She is a shapeshifting mutant who leads the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and is the biological mother of Kurt "Nightcrawler" Wagner and Graydon Creed. She serves as a frequent ally to Apocalypse.
She was voiced by Randall Carpenter in season 1, and by Jennifer Dale in subsequent episodes.
Biography
At one point in her life, Mystique had a relationship with fellow mutant Sabretooth, resulting in their son whom she abandoned. Sometime before or after, she married an Austrian count and had another son, a teleporting blue-colored mutant who was adopted by a traveling circus family (and would later become Nightcrawler) after she left him floating in a basket in the river. When Rogue was a young teenager, Mystique adopted her so she could mold her into a superpowered weapon which permanently drains Ms. Marvel's super strength and ability to fly (although she fortunately regains her consciousness). Rogue eventually left Mystique's residence, after which she encountered Professor Charles Xavier and became part of the X-Men.
She first appears in a cameo in the episode "Slave Island", imprisoned by xenophobic humans on the island Genosha until the X-Men broke everyone free. During Apocalypse's debut duology, Mystique helps him capture Angel and three other mutants to torture them into his weaponized slaves (known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) via impersonating the late Dr. Gottfried Adler, luring them in with fake promises to cure their powers with a machine on Muir Island. After Rogue (who was nearly turned into one of those slaves herself before Angel stepped in) sees the results on television at the World Peace Conference, Mystique destroys the cure-machine when Rogue comes to interrogate her for information and then escapes.
In the "Days of Future Past" duology, it's revealed that Apocalypse ordered Mystique to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly, impersonating Gambit in an attempt to frame the X-Men. After the X-Men defeat her fellow Brotherhood members (Pyro, Avalanche and the Blob) and Mystique reveals her true self, Rogue helps her escape the Capitol Building after remembering that she was her foster mother. Before walking away, Mystique states that the reason why she nearly turned Rogue into a horseman was because she thought it was the only way to get her back. She reappears in the season 2 episode "A Rogue's Tale", where she tries to kill all the X-Men so she can be with her adopted daughter once more. Mystique ultimately failed in this endeavor as Rogue finally saw her as an abusive two-face who gave her PTSD by molding her into something WORSE than a killer, thus leaving her alone on a rooftop after stating that she wasn't her daughter anymore (which is a call-back to what Rogue's biological father said upon disowning her).
In the "Beyond Good and Evil" quadrilogy, Mystique helps kidnap certain Psylocke and Professor X for Apocalypse, but decides to betray him after seeing his true intentions to use the psychics to rewrite the timestream. Her final episode is "Bloodlines", in which she gets captured by Graydon Creed, her own son who forces to write and send a threatening note to Nightcrawler saying he'll kill her unless he comes to save her. While trying to escape Graydon's murder attempt after nearly dying in a gas chamber, Mystique gets ambushed on a dam by her other son Nightcrawler, who says that he and God both forgive her for abandoning him as a baby despite her saying she doesn't deserve any prayers. Then suddenly, Graydon flies in on the two with his helicopter and shoots at Nightcrawler, but Mystique decides to sacrifice herself by taking a bullet for the son she abandoned before falling backwards off the dam to her "death". Although Rogue and Nightcrawler assume she died, Mystique is revealed to still be alive as she genuinely cries while walking away from her own two children.
