N & M, also known as Commander Haydock and Mrs. Sprot are the main antagonsists of Agatha Christie's novel with the same name.
Biography[]
The first time we hear about Agents M and N is when Grant briefs Tommy on recent events. The agent who exposed that the two agents were living in Sans Souci was killed. Unfortunately, the killed agent never had time to tell anything about the identity of these agents. Tommy and Tuppence, who joined him, begin their investigation. Many residents of the local hotel suspect the German of being a spy (which is not surprising, since World War II is underway). Also, a German often dates a local Polish woman. Tommy and Tuppence suspect Mrs Perera because of her strange behavior. However, at some point, the Polish woman kidnaps Betty, Mrs. Sprot's little daughter. Soon the Polish woman is overtaken and Mrs. Sprot kills her. Soon the German is arrested, but Tommy and Tuppence do not fully believe in his guilt. Soon, Tommy discovers a radiator from Commander Haydock (the man who contributed to the arrest of the previous German spy and bought this hotel) and escapes under a stupid pretext, but is kidnapped. Tuppence immediately realizes that something has happened to Tommy and calls his old friend Albert for help. Albert manages to find Tommy and Tommy gives him a sign. Tuppence and Albert inform the counterintelligence agents about what happened, but Tuppence soon falls into the trap of Haydock (who was Agent N). He tries to kill her, but is killed at the last moment by counterintelligence agents. Soon Tommy is released from captivity. Agent M turns out to be Mrs. Sprot. Betty's real mother was not Mrs. Sprot, but the Polish woman she killed. Mrs. Sprot decided to adopt the girl so that she would not be suspected of being a spy. However, the girl's biological mother unexpectedly began to show interest in her daughter and even kidnapped her. Mrs. Sprot managed to catch up with her and kill her without making much noise. She hid the information she obtained in children's books.
