~ N's meltdown to the party in the beginning of Chapter 6. |
N is the secondary antagonist of the 2022 role-playing video game Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and a major antagonist in the DLC Future Redeemed. He is a mysterious golden figure resembling Noah who serves as the overseer of the Consuls that watch over the colonies of Aionis.
Halfway through the game, it is revealed that N himself is a previous incarnation of Noah who willingly joined the Consuls, in order to be with M forever.
Much like his regular counterpart, he was voiced by Ryōhei Arai in Japanese and Harry McEntire in English.
Appearance[]
N is a humanoid with blue eyes and long black hair. Unlike the other Consuls, N's armor is colored golden instead of red, with a large red "X" in the center of his chest.
Biography[]
Origins[]
Long ago, Noah fought against the Consuls for an unknown amount of time after rebelling against the Kevesi orders to join the Lost Numbers. But after continuous failures to bring them down, he abandoned his hope of ending the war and decided to be with Mio, eventually the two raised a son named Ghondor. Upon reaching his tenth term, Noah entrusted the rest of the City's future to Ghondor.
But once he passed away, Noah would meet Z, the leader of the Consuls, who showed Noah each of his previous lives, witnessing how he and Mio would fall in love, join the Lost Numbers, and meet a terrible fate, over and over again. Seeing this was enough for Noah to lose his mind. Z offered to revive Noah and Mio as Moebius so they could be together. Noah accepted the offer and became the Consul N.
Future Redeemed[]
Accompanied by an armada of Flaks, N attacked the City's Lost Numbers to gather the Embers needed to revive Mio as M. During the assault, N spotted Na'el, granddaughter of Ghondor, gathering a group of surviving citizens to build a new world. Identifying her as a host used by Alpha, N battled her and managed to get the upper hand. But as he lunged for a finishing blow, Ghondor jumped in the way and was impaled on N's sword. Ghondor recognizes N as his father and asks him if this was what his mother would have wanted. Using the last of his Ouroboros power, Ghondor activated a powerful burst of energy just as his grandson Matthew arrived, temporarily stopping Alpha but leaving the City destroyed. Since then, Matthew swore to kill N and avenge his grandfather.
N would encounter Matthew and his friends at Raguel Lake during their clash against Alpha in Na'el's body at Raguel Lake. Alpha attempts to convince N to stop fighting due to Na'el's heritage, but N refuses, claiming he has since abandoned his path. Once again, N claims the upper hand, but is stopped by Matthew trying to protect his sister. Matthew uses his Ouroboros power to repel N's attacks and lunges at him, only for A to block him, explaining that N was not his enemy and reveals his identity as his great-grandfather. With Alpha's Core Crystal damaged, he retreats to Origin which appears above the region. N then takes his leave, telling Matthew that he will kill Alpha, caring not if Matthew could save Na'el beforehand.
The party then make their way to the Black Mountains to reach Prison Island. At the Prison Terrace, N returns to stop them, wanting to kill Matthew as his presence is the only thing keeping Na'el in the world. As they clash, a memory from Origin is shown revealing the truth behind the City's destruction. Matthew berrates N for his foolishness in choosing the wrong choice for the sake of the future. Shocked by this, N admits defeat and Matthew decides to spare him, only willing to strike him down if he tries another stunt. Suddenly, Alpha appears and zaps N with a beam of energy before teleporting the party to the Ark.
During the final battle, as Alpha attempts to absorb Matthew's soul, N appears and distracts Alpha long enough for him to release Matthew and Na'el. N applies for a temporary truce to aid the party in defeating Alpha. For the finishing move, N combines the Sword of the End with Matthew's Gauntlets to merge the six Ouroboros as one, giving them enough strength to finish off Alpha.
With Alpha gone, N warns Matthew that he will follow his Moebius orders in continuing the endless now. Matthew assures him that the Ouroboros will continue fighting for the future, and his descendants will pick up where he leaves off.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3[]
A small manifestation of N's guilt for joining Moebius and M's sorrow at being forced into eternal life as Moebius, would reincarnate into its own current Noah and Mio.
N first appears during the Consuls' meeting following D's defeat to plan a next strategy to defeat the Ouroboros, where N orders K to take actions next as the party was nearing his colony. After K's defeat and the liberation of Colony 4, N and the Queen of Keves invite current commander Ethel alongside the recently imprisoned Cammuravi from the defeated Colony Delta to Keves Castle. There, they reveal that they plan on using the castle's Annihilator to destroy Colony 4 for it was liberated by the Ouroboros and no longer served a purpose to the castle. N then offers Ethel a choice to either watch her colony be destroyed or pilot her own Ferronis to destroy the Ouroboros herself, to which she picks the latter option.
The party defeat Ethel and Cammuravi resulting in them killing each other and destroy the Annihilator, but mistakenly enter the throne room while searching for an escape route, where Noah spots a newborn Ethel in a container. They are ambushed by the Queen and N, shocking Noah upon seeing something looking identical to him. The team defeat the Queen, revealing herself to be a mechanical imposter, to which N remarks that the real Queen had not given up on her "false hope". N prepares to attack the team only to be distracted when a group of Lost Numbers raid the castle to obtain some of the cloning pods, including Ethel's. This distraction allowed the Ouroboros to escape. M appears and asks N what he will do when they next encounter the party, to which he replies that he'll give them equilibrium.
Later, the Ouroboros raid a prison underneath the Agnus Castle to rescue Monica's daughter Ghondor by disguising themselves as inmates. After three days, the team hatch a seemingly successful plan to escape, only to be caught at the end by N and M, as Shania sold their plan out.
To N's surprise, M offered to fight the Ouroboros first, shedding a single tear and promptly secretly switching bodies with Mio, while also sharing her memories with her, who, in M's body, acts the part of Moebius during the fight, while M is in the party's place. Mio acts as Moebius and uses M's mind-controlling powers to make the team fight against each other, putting on a very convincing front as Moebius for both N and the party, until Taion discovers a way to source her energy and they use it to fight her until she falls back. N challenges the group next and was unable to be harmed for he rapidly teleported away from their attacks. Lanz/Sena's Ouroboros managed to grab N and overheated itself in an attempt to destroy N in an annihilation event. However, X arrives and seals away the team's powers within her scepter. N wasn't actually expecting her appearance either, but she said it was under Z's orders. Powerless, the team is forced to surrender.
Imprisoned within Agnus Castle, M, still putting on a front as Mio, is in one prison cell while Noah and the others are in the one next to hers and Mio is still putting on a front as Moebius. N explains to the group that he only spared them as he intends on making them live the rest of the month within jail until Mio's body's tenth term expires, whom both N and the party believe to be Ouroboros Mio, as those who has their flames run out during a Homecoming do not return to the cycle of rebirth. The group is then forced to stay in jail until Mio's body's final day arrives, where they are taken before the false Queen of Agnus who prepares the Homecoming ceremony with the Ouroboros being forced to watch as who they think to be Mio is executed. N taunts Noah to join in due to his position as an off-seer and it being his Mio (to them). Once Mio's body fades away, N raises his sword above Noah's neck before bringing it downward.
Noah finds himself whisked away to another realm where a smaller version of himself shows him his previous life which would become N. Noah swears not to make the same mistake before returning to reality. N stops before he slices Noah's neck, as Mio uses M's Moebius power and enters his body at the last minute to show him M's memories. Mio reveals it was her in M's body all along, as M swapped bodies with Mio during their initial fight in her plan to stop Moebius, as well as to allow M to free herself from an existence as Moebius as well as hoping her death would help N realize how far he had fallen and how deeply this was hurting M. This instead horrifies N and drives him into a crazed rage, realizing that instead of (Noah's) Mio they sent off, it was M, (his Mio). During his breakdown, N swears to kill Noah to take Mio by force, as she was still within M's body. Instead, Noah and Mio use their new Ouroboros skill to draw out the Sword of the End, allowing them to defeat N and destroy X's scepter. N's Moebius core is damaged and he is forced to retreat with X.
Within Origin, N makes his last appearance before Noah and the others in the room with the imprisoned Queen Melia, once again declaring his intention to make Mio his. Despite being defeated twice, N refuses to accept his defeat or listen to Noah's beckon to be reasoned with, enraged why Noah's version of Mio chose to stay by Noah's side when his M did not. His rampage is only stopped when Mio reveals that M's spirit was still inside of her, explaining all the sadness she carried from her unwanted immortality and how N never once reasoned with himself for his acts. This makes N come to his senses and Noah convinces him that it wasn't too late to take a second option. As such, N merges his spirit into Noah.
In the Ouroboros' final battle against Z, N and M's spirits come out of Noah and Mio, entrusting them to protect the future before sacrificing themselves to destroy Z for good.
