“ | We got hit the other day. A truck headed south got hijacked. Someone stole a quarter of a million. Now Hector's flippin' out, lookin' for who did it. Thing is... I think it was you. They left the driver hog-tied, not a mark on him. Anyone in the game woulda capped him without a second thought. But this driver? He's still breathin'. I thought to myself, who's the guy who'll rip off a couple hundred thousand in drug money and leave a witness? Who's the guy who won't pull the trigger? You. I'm not here to squeeze you. You wanna rip off the cartel, that's your business. But here's the thing. I'm picking up that driver, Hector's orders. We're gonna see what he knows, and if he knows you, that's bad for both of us | „ |

“ | Him? You think the... Chicken Man? What a joke. Alvarez has been paying me for years. Years, but you know what? I would've done it for free because I hate every last one of you psycho. Sacks. Of shit. I opened Lalo's gate. And I would do it again, and I'm glad what they did to him. He's a soulless pig. And I wish I killed him with my own hands, and you know what else, Hector? I put you in that chair. Oh yeah, your heart meds? I switched them for sugar pills. You were dead and buried, and I had to watch this asshole bring you back. So when you are sitting in your shitty nursing home, and you're sucking down on your Jell-O night after night for the rest of your life, you think of me! You twisted FUCK! | „ |

Ignacio "Nacho" Varga is a major character in the crime drama series Better Call Saul, the prequel series to Breaking Bad.
He was a criminal who had formerly been affiliated with both The Cartel and Salamanca Family, starting out as the right-hand man of Tuco Salamanca before going on to work for the latter's uncle Hector Salamanca following Tuco's arrest. Thereafter Nacho played a bigger role in the Cartel to the point of becoming the one in command of the Salamanca turf in Albuquerque. Despite this, however, he grows more unhappy with the Cartel's ruthlessness as both the lives of himself and his father are put in danger - most particularly when he ends up being forced to collaborate with Hector's archenemy, Gus Fring, against the Cartel.
He was portrayed by Michael Mando, who also played Vaas Montenegro in Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 6, and Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Personality[]
“ | What do I want? Respect. I want to make my own decisions, go my own way. I don't want anyone to even think of playing me. And I don't want to be looking over my shoulder. | „ |
~ Nacho explaining to Don Eladio what he wants. |
Nacho was highly intelligent, aloof, somewhat cold, quiet and very perceptive. Although loyal to the Salamancas and the Cartel, Nacho shows qualities of a good leader as well. He was able to conduct business with the Cartel and perform his own side jobs without the Cartel ever knowing. Despite Nacho's dangerous lifestyle, he does show compassion for some people in his life, especially his father, which he did everything in his power to protect. He also shows compassion for unfortunate civilians that were caught in the Cartel's schemes.
In comparison to others around him, Nacho is shown to be more level-headed and mature than most. This comparison is most prominent when Nacho is beside Tuco. Even though Tuco and Nacho deeply respect each other, Nacho was frightened that one day, Tuco would attack Nacho in a drug-fueled rage, something that Tuco has frequently done to others. Because of that, Nacho wanted Tuco taken care of, and enlisted Mike's help. Nacho is also shown to be a quick thinker in dire situations, as he was able to rush into a building and steal any remaining drugs just as law enforcement was entering the same building, which greatly impressed a spectating Lalo.
When Gus and his men figure out that Nacho caused Hector to have his permanently crippling stroke, Gus blackmails Nacho into working for him. Nacho shows loyalty to Gus and Mike all the way to his death, doing absolutely anything to make sure his father is safe from the Cartel in the end, even if Nacho must give his life to do so.
Due to Nacho's moderate amount of morality, he can easily see the overly cruel methods of the Salamancas, and is disgusted by them. He was also one of the very few characters to attempt to take them down. However, because of his lower rank in the Cartel, he keeps these opinions to himself. Lalo was the only Salamanca that Nacho could not defeat or outsmart.
One of the few moments where Nacho was not on top of his game is when he was scoping out the home of the Kettlemans in a conspicuous looking van that had a blood stain in it, and was later arrested for this (although the phone call that Saul gave the Kettlemans helped Nacho get arrested). This was the same van Tuco used to kidnap two skateboarding brothers and came close to killing them. When Saul got Nacho out of custody, Nacho was furious with Saul, thinking that Saul ratted him out and would get revenge, but Saul insists that he did no such thing and reminds Nacho of the foolish way he got caught. Though Nacho quietly walks away and never brings it up again, he clearly saw truth in what Saul said.

Trivia[]
- Nacho is first referenced during Saul's debut in Breaking Bad. When Saul is held at gunpoint by Walt and Jesse, Saul (mistakenly thinking that they're hitmen sent by Lalo) says "It wasn't me, it was Ignacio, he's the one!".
- Nacho never meets Kim Wexler, Howard Hamlin, or Chuck McGill.
