This is all my fault. I killed my husband, I killed little Susumu, and the in-laws I loved more than my own parents. I thought they'd all rise up the way I did. I thought we would be a family forever. Being the only one to rise up... that's my punishment. I killed them all! I killed them all!
~ Nao's remorseful breakdown.

Nao Yasumori is a major antagonist in the Shiki franchise.

She was a mild mannered housewife before being bitten and turned into a vampire. After rising again, she was ruthlessly determined to turn the rest of her family into vampires like her, which put her at odds with Toshio Ozaki who was determined to save them. She was also the first Shiki that Toshio encounters, and is responsible for exposing the truth of their existence to him.

She was voiced by Miki Itou in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Cynthia Cranz in the English version.

Biography[]

Nao grew up in a broken household, and was abandoned by her gambling addict parents at a young age.

Later on she met Mikiyasu Yasumori, who had the kindest, most loving family that welcomed her into their home as if she was their own daughter. This life meant the world to her, and filled her with constant joy and contentment. She once bragged about her life to the owner of the local diner Hasegawa, unaware that he and his wife lost their child.

When the Kirishiki family arrived in town, she was one of the first people to invite them into her home, and was bitten shortly after. She was one of Toshio Ozaki's first patients to be bitten, and due to this, there was not much he could do before she passed away and returned as a vampire. After rising again, she would proceed to bite and kill her husband and son, both of whom would not rise again.

Once she moved on to her mother-in-law Setsuko, Toshio Ozaki had begun to theorize that vampires were behind the deaths, and purposely kept her in his hospital at night to keep Nao away. Unable to escape her desire to turn Setsuko, Nao arrived at the hospital one night, but was removed by Toshio, since she had no permission to enter.

The top Kirishiki enforcer Tatsumi managed to seduce the wife of Ozaki, and used her to gain permission to enter the hospital, allowing him to give Nao access to the building, and ultimately bite and turn Setsuko. During the meeting, Nao tries to cheer Megumi Shimizu reassuring her that Natsuno will rise from the dead, but the latter taunts at her of how her family didn’t rise up, which causes Nap to burst into tears. Much like with the rest of her family, Setsuko would not rise again, and neither would her father-in-law when she finished feeding off of him.

After her entire family had passed away, she lamented her horrible luck, and speculated that her biological parents were responsible for her ability to become a Shiki. In a fit of jealousy and sorrowful rage, she targeted her sister-in-law Junko, who had been spared from the wrath of the Kirishiki family up until that point.

After Toshio Ozaki revealed the truth in front of the entire village and started a hunt to kill every last Shiki, Nao hid in the irrigation tunnels beneath Sotoba. At first their hiding place seemed safe, but after a while the humans realized Shiki would be hiding there and targeted them. As she delved deeper and deeper into the tunnels to escape, Nao began to have hallucinations of her dead family such as her father in law, her mother in law's drained corpse, her sister-in-law Junko, and her son Susumu running up to her before his face melts, causing her to have a panic attack and burst into tears. Upon crawling to a dead end, Nao realizes what is happening is punishment for killing her family. Takatoshi Hirosawa tries to comfort her, but she won’t listen. Eventually as the Shiki was snagged, Nao, after she had a remorseful breakdown, punching Sasaki's posterior, was encountered by the leader of the irrigation tunnel hunters Sadafumi Tamo, who stabbed her legs, tied them up and dragged her out into the sunlight, not long before she hallucinated her husband, Mikiyasu.

Nao burned beneath the sun in agonizing torment, as she was left for dead by the sadistic hunters who did not view her as a person. However, one hunter did: her former acquaintance Hasegawa, who arrived to stake her and end her suffering. Nao flashed Hasegawa a smile before she died, thanking him for his act of mercy.
