~ Naoya Goda after rescuing Remina from the mob, following the death of her father and Yasumi. |
“ | Remina is the planet's avatar. The planet causes us to suffer, and we must return that suffering through Remina. The girl must die in pain. | „ |
~ Naoya Goda on Remina's ritual. |
Naoya Goda, more commonly known by his last name Goda, is the secondary antagonist of the Junji Ito manga Hellstar Remina.
Goda started off as being Remina Oguro's biggest fan, even being the president of one of her fanclubs. His fanclub was soon after promoted to "official" status by Remina's manger. As soon as the hellstar named after Remina proves to be a threat, Goda tries to protect her from a global doomsday cult, and competes for her attention, especially with Kunihiro Mineishi. However, after saving Remina from the hands of the cult, Goda tries to murder Kunihiro for "leaving Remina to die", which causes her to get upset at him. This has led Goda to feel rejected, now wanting to kill Remina out of revenge.
It is later revealed that Goda has at some point become the leader of the cult as soon as Remina escapes with Daisuke and several strangers they meet in the now destructed city. While as the cult's new leader, Goda was able to convince the cult that because Remina's sacrifice is "sacred" and that Remina was supposedly an avatar of the hellstar, the ritual therefore involved torturing her before killing her off as slowly and painfully as possible.
Biography[]
The Chase[]
Goda is first seen attending the celebration of Remina's 16th birthday, trying to offer her a selection of flowers. After that, the son of Remina's sponsor, Kunihiro Mineishi, is competing with him for her attention. When an unidentified person throws an egg at Remina following the dispelling of rumors surrounding her. Goda tries to spot the perpetrator by shouting at everyone who attended.
When further news breaks about the approaching of the hellstar Remina, an angry mob forms after a stranger in the crowd declares that Remina and her father are tied to the hellstar itself, believing that the both of them summoned it. The newly formed mob then chase after Remina, Yasumi, Goda, Mineishi, and the vice president of the fanclub, where they escape into an apartment via a flying car. Goda is anxious when the others mention people believing that Remina was responsible for the Hellstar approaching, and directs attention towards the large amount of people in the mob. The mob is later broadcasted, to which a group of three hooded men kill the news broadcaster after he begins declaring that the government is taking actions to appease the growing mob.
As soon as the cult declares their plan to sacrifice Remina and their father, Goda notes the preposterous notion that they are connected to the Hellstar. After Yasumi tries to assure Remina that she will be safe, Goda and Mineishi begin arguing about who cares about her most. Yasumi stops their arguing, and tells the group that they should find somewhere else to retreat to. Mineishi tells everyone that he has plans for only himself and Remina to hide back in his family's mansion. Goda protests, stating that it's bound to get her killed as his family is her sponsors, though Mineshi states that the mansion also has best security system and an underground bunker.
When the mob comes to the new complex the group is hiding in, Goda goads the vice president to get the flying car back in order to escape from the mob again. Being hesitant to take up this task, and losing hope in the situation, the vice president turns himself in, which leads to him being shot to death by the mob. Afterwards, the rest of the group escapes into a trashchute which leads to the sewers of Tokyo. They escape the sewers, only to be ganged up by the mob again, where Goda gets caught and pinned down to the ground. When Yasumi gets killed by the mob, a distressed Remina is seen mourning his death, which upsets Goda, coming to believe she loved Yasumi over him.
A group of three hooded figures come over to the sight and restrain both Remina and Goda to the crucifixion spot Goda had spotted earlier. Goda then promises that he'll rescue Remina from the mob, and that he loves her, even if "loved" Yasumi more, still somewhat heartbroken by Remina mourning him. When the cult leaders begin stringing up Remina on a cross, Goda is begging them to not kill her. The planet Remina then further approaches Earth, and proceeds to eat the moon, and then prepares to follow with the Earth. The military then sends several hundred missles towards it, which only impedes its process, and the remains of the missiles wind up falling back onto Earth, and blows up the city.
Rejection[]
Goda is then able to successfully get Remina off of the cross, and escape into a destroyed building from the earthquakes caused by the missiles. Goda excitedly shouts out that he saved Remina. Remina wakes up, and Goda tries to speak to her, telling her about how he saved her like he promised to her. Unfortunately, Remina hasn't recovered from the trauma caused from the mob brutally murdering both her father and Yasmui. This causes Remina to hysterically yell for them, and cry profusely. Despite this, Goda selfishly tells her about how she's with him now, how much he's attracted her, rambles about how he saved her, that she should move on from these tragic events, and that she belongs to "all of the fans of the world", rather than "some bunch of elites".
They then meet up with a distressed Mineishi, who had last abandoned the rest of the group when they were being gained up on. Though Mineishi is happy to see the both of them, Goda proceeds to assault him for his selfish act. Remina then demands Goda to stop this, telling him that there's nothing more she hates than violence. Goda then storms off, taking this to mean that Remina hates him. Mineishi then attempts to take Remina with her to his family's underground bunker, but when she retaliates from his attempt to rape her, she gets kicked out of the mansion when Mineishi lies about her of advancing on him to his parents. By this point, Goda has become the cult's new leader.
Descent into Evil[]
Goda then reiterates the cult's primary goal to her again, prompts her to run before they can kill her, and whips her, which breaks her necklace. After the cult laugh at her misery, Remina runs away from them. In the meantime, another earthquake occurs, temporarily distracting them, and letting Remina run into a secluded area covered in planks of wood resided by a hobo. Goda manages to find both of them, though, which causes Remina to embrace the hobo, further infuriating Goda. Before any of the cult members can proceed to kill Remina, Goda states that because the sacrifice is sacred, that Remina is believed to be an avatar of the hellstar, and that they have time to perform the "proper ritual", the ritual involves her suffering immensely, and that the hobo will be put to death for getting involved with her, a "known witch". Goda then tells the cult to drown Remina after she tries to defend the hobo.
Following from this, Goda orders the cult to string the both of them up, so that they can whipped and beaten with metal rods. Goda then whips Remina several times. When she cries out in pain, and calls for her dead father and manager, Goda relishes in Remina's suffering. The hellstar's tongue shows up in the distance, with several worried cult members prompting Goda to finally sacrifice them, and the cult dragging Remina and the hobo across the street. When Remina cries out for her father again, Goda taunts her, saying she will see him soon. When they get to the cite of crucifixtion, Goda then forces Remina to see the charred corpse of her father on the cross, and orders the cult to tie her up on the cross on her father's side, and the hobo tied up on the opposite side. Goda then orders the cross to be burned, only for the "ritual" to be interuppted by the hellstar proceeding to lick the planet.
Everyone except for Goda, who climbs onto the cross, flees away from the immending threat. Afterwards, Goda lifts up his mask to lick Remina's face. Goda holds onto the cross as it is washed away by a tsunami of the hellstar's saliva caused by it licking the Earth. This causes the Earth to spin at a much more rapid pace. Goda then emerges from the ocean of saliva, and frees both Remina and the hobo to kidnap Remina. Thanks to the high winds and low gravity caused by the Earth's rapid rotation, Goda jumps to the top of a destructed building, and proceeds to swing Remina through the air and slam her against it repeatedly. The hobo then chases after Goda, leaping from buildings and other structures, beats him up, and rescues Remina.
Goda calls out to the other cult members to follow after them, and they all proceed to chase after them. Millions of other people from around the world also join the cult to kill Remina and the hobo. When they make it back to the city, Goda finally manages to catch up to them, and grabs Remina by the ankles, while the other cult members gather up to start their ambush. However, Remina, the hobo, Goda, and all of the cult members fall back down to Earth, and everyone except Remina, the hobo, and Goda dies.
Final Confrontation and Defeat[]
After they rescue some strangers found in the now destructed city and attempt to evacuate into the Mineishi's underground bunker, Goda tries one more time to kill Remina by attempting to prevent her from getting into the bunker, and taking her down with him by cracking his whip at her. This inadvertently causes his mask to get removed, revealing that he took over the cult that sought to kill her. When Remina questions him for why he's been doing this, Goda tells her that he's been doing this to prevent her from falling in love with anyone else, as she "belonged to everyone". Goda finally expresses his distress over Remina's concern over Yasumi before he plummets to his death, ultimately being devoured alive by the hellstar.
Personality[]
At the beginning of the story, Goda appears to be obsessed and infatuated with Remina, willing to do whatever he can to get her love and attention, and does not take kindly to people competing with him for her affection, as evidenced when Mineishi tries gaining her attention at her 16th birthday celebration, or when Remina shows affection for her manager after being tragically murdered. Goda also shows a sense of entitlement for being the president of Remina's official fanclub, which leads him to think that he is entitled to her, and knows what's best for her, resulting in many occasions to be quite argumentative. On one occasion, he had gotten in an argument with Mineishi over who's best suited for protecting her after Yasumi tries to assure her she will be safe, and once again when Mineishi suggested that he'd bring her to his mansion for her protection.
Goda best shows his sense of entitlement towards Remina after he rescues her from the mob following the destruction of the city from shards of missiles shot at the hellstar, which followed after the deaths of both her father and her manager, two people she knew and loved dearly. Goda has come to believe that because he saved her, he deserves her attention and affection, which Remina doesn't show towards him, being very doleful about the tragic deaths of the both of them. Despite this, Goda shows a complete lack of empathy for Remina's feelings, instead telling her that neither of them were needed in her life, and that she instead belongs to him, and all other fans of the world, only seeing Remina for the idelized, celebritized version of her. Goda further shows this when Mineishi, who previously abandoned the group to avoid the mob, tries to embrace the both of them. At this point, Goda ambushes Mineishi for abandoning them, Remina tries to appease the conflict, and Goda feels rejected as a result.
When he takes over the cult, he's able to convince the entire cult that as a result of Remina's sacrifice being sacred, and because she is supposedly an avatar of the hellstar, her sacrifice should involve the cold-blooded torture towards her and anyone she associates with. The climax of the manga also shows that he is persistent in his endeavors to sexually take advantage of, torture and eventually murder Remina, as he was able to catch up with both her and her associates on three different occasions, despite failing each time, and leading to massive setbacks. On one other occasion, when the planet Remina licks the Earth, whereas everyone else in the cult retreated, he proceeds to climb onto the cross, and lick Remina's face.

Trivia[]
- Goda, being the president of Remina's official fanclub, is meant to be a dark humanization of the fanbases that surround Japanese idols. Japanese idols are often expected to strictly keep up an image of purity and innocence, often as a means of making them more attractive to fans. To keep up this image, idols are expected to "be available" to all of their fans but also to avoid showing signs of being in a relationship - platonic or romantic - until they retire; this can cause the idol to become shamed, or even threatened by fans. Goda's drive to murder Remina comes from this practice, citing that the reason he tortured her was because Remina showed affection towards her manager and her father, and none towards him despite his level of dedication.
- Throughout the manga, there are several moments that foreshadow Goda being involved in the cult in some way.
- The cult leader, later revealed to be Goda, particularly relishes in the anguish expressed by Remina calling out for both her father and Yasumi as she's strung up and whipped. Remina had previously mourned both of their deaths in front of Goda, Goda felt somewhat heartbroken after Remina started mourning for Yasumi, and he had shown little to no concern for their deaths when she cried profusely over their deaths.
- The cult leader licks Remina's face when the hellstar begins doing the same with the planet. Goda is also clearly infatuated with Remina to a high degree. In another panel, you can also make out a chin and moustache that looks similar to Goda's.
- Along with the second point, when the cult leader sees that Remina was embracing Daisuke for rescuing her, he was quite angered. Goda, while his feelings of jealousy are stronger in this scenario, had also expressed competitive feelings towards anyone else that Remina showed affection towards, believing that she didn't "belong" to a particular person.
- When Goda becomes the leader of the cult, several of his physical features begin to resemble those of the hellstar itself, symbolizing his cruelty and malice towards Remina the human, such as his eyes in several close-ups, and his tongue when he licks Remina. This has led some fans to speculate that Goda might actually be a physical avatar of the hellstar itself or, in essence, a resident of the hellstar.
