Naoya Zenin, also known as The Fastest, is a major antagonist in the 2018 supernatural action manga/anime series Jujutsu Kaisen.
He is the youngest son of Naobito Zenin who saw himself as the true and worthy heir to the prestigious Zenin family after his father’s death. He is also the head of the Hei, the clan’s elite unit of Special Grade 1 jujutsu sorcerers, and is able to utilize his family’s inherited technique of Projection Sorcery at an elite level. Naoya is also the archenemy of Maki Zenin, having looked down on her throughout her whole life for her lack of a technique and from his own misogynistic worldview.
Appearance[]
Naoya is a tall 27-year old man with an athletic build. He has sharp brown eyes and dyed blonde hair accented with dark green roots. He has three piercings in his left ear, one in his ear lobe, and two more toward the top. Naoya wears a wore a long-sleeved white shirt with a long button-down collar, on top of this he wore a dark-colored kimono, at the bottom he wore a hakama and a pair of tabi.
As a Cursed Womb. Naoya appears as a caterpillar-like creature with human arms and a face covered in a star-shaped mask with six holes. As well his distorted face can protrude from one of these holes, his evolved form resembles a skeletal chrysalis with extending tentacles that band together to function like humanoid limbs.
Personality[]
Naoya was a prodigy from a young age, and was praised as a genius by many of the other members of the Zenin Clan. Having been spoiled and raised in a competitive environment, he grew into a self-absorbed, narcissistic and arrogant man that always feel that he is been superior than others since childhood, arrogantly considering himself the only candidate to be the next head of the Zenin family, and that he is superior to others even to people who have several years of experience.
Naoya had no empathy for anyone other than himself. He showed no respect to his elders, Jinichi and Oghi, and showed even less respect to his cousins, Maki and Mai. He also showed no regard for his dying father, Naobito, and did not even pretend to be saddened by his death. The only people who he ever seemed to slightly respect were men who he believed understood true strength, such as Gojo Satoru Toji Fushiguro.
He also liked to torment and mock his cousin Maki to vent his frustration, he also called her not fit to use jujutsu. However, when Megumi was chosen to be the next head of his family, not only was he furious, but he was also frustrated by it, envious of which he wanted to kill him.
Biography[]
Little is known about Naoya's life other than that he is the youngest son of Naobito Zenin, who is the 26th head of the family. Zenin stopped thinking of himself as superior to others and that he was the only candidate to be their deputy. However, after a huge argument between Ogi and Jinchi and Naoya, he decided to leave the family.
Itadori's Extermination Arc[]
After the death of Megumi Fushiguro's father, due to his father being a member of the Zen family, she was chosen to be the new head of the Zen family. Naoya, upon learning that Megumi would become his father's second-in-command, was angry, so he went to Shibuya where Megumi was staying to kill him on the spot. Naoya came instead of Megumi and met Yuji with Choso and then attacked them, even though Yuta stopped this fight, Naoya continued the fight this time with Choso where he then lost to him.
After his defeat, Naoya feels very angry still holding grudges against them then leaving Shibuya where Yuta was watching it all.
Perfect Preparation Arc[]
Sometime later, his cousin Maki comes to his house with a burnt face and Naoya saw this and he was pissed that he started calling her names and ignoring her questions while mocking her that she is unable to use cursed techniques or see cursed spirits. Naoya talks to Jinichi and tells him that he is reckless and thinks Megumi is better than Naoya, and Naoya disagrees. However, their conversation is interrupted by an alarm with Naoya wondering what's going on. Upon learning from Ranta that Maki had killed Ogi, Naoya was shocked that Ogi was killed by her and then sent the Kukuru unit to hunt her down.
After the Kukuru Units including his Hei unit were defeated and killed by Maki, Naoya came to see his injured cousin holding the head of her comrade Jinchi where she was then thrown into the water by Maki. Naoya asks her cousin if she has a human heart and Maki replies that she doesn't because it was taken away. After Maki responded, Naoya starts attacking her where she grabs Maki's arm and then uses projection magic on her to trap her in the frame where she is thrown into the air and tried to use speed to successfully defeat Maki. However, Maki manages to dodge his attack and then defeats him, leaving him injured.
After Naoya was defeated by his cousin, he tried to crawl to safety by crawling while injured, hoping he wouldn't die. Unfortunately for him, Maki's mother, who is in a dying state, came up to him and stabbed him in the back to kill him, the weakened Naoya tried to use the cursed energy to defend himself but fails as Maki slices his face in half. causing the Time Cell Moon Palace to be destroyed.
Trivia[]
- His name has the kanji for "honesty, frankness" (直 nao?) and "exclamation, alas" (哉 ya?).
- Despite not having a appareance in the anime yet, many Japanese fans want Kōji Yusa to voice Naoya, as they bombarded social media in their recommendation of Yusa for him.
