Napogistra is the main antagonist of the anime movie Doraemon: Nobita and the Tin Labyrinth. He is a super-intelligent robot who was once a scientist for the King of Chamocha, before overthrowing the latter and taking over the planet himself, repopulating it with robots while imprisoning all humans.

He was voiced by the late Shūichirō Moriyama, who would go on to voice Dester in Doraemon: Nobita in the Robot Kingdom in the Japanese version, and Jeff Bennett in the English dubbed version, who also voiced H.A.R.D.A.C. in Batman: The Animated Series, the Joker in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, D.A.V.E. in The Batman, and Father in Codename: Kids Next Door.

History[]

Past[]

Napogistra was created as a super-intelligent robot in order to invent devices that can serve the Chamochans' lives. Secretly however, he plotted to usurp the king, and only Duke Burikin, a trusted scientist of the royals, saw through his deception. Burikin tried to warn the king to no avail, since the latter had been too blinded by the glory of Napogistra's inventions. As a result, Burikin and his family fled to an artificial island that he designed himself a while back, and did a research to take down Napogistra.

After completing it, Burikin put the invention inside the labyrinth under the island, before leaving the island with his wife to discuss things with the king, leaving their son Sapio behind to guard the island alongside his robot friends. Unfortunately, by then Napogistra had already overthrown the king and imprisoned all humans on the planet, thus the Duke and the Duchess were captured as well, forcing Sapio and his friends to flee aboard the island (which can function like a spaceship) into space. After a year, they landed on Earth and disguised themselves as a tourist area.

Doraemon: Nobita and the Tin Labyrinth[]

Having discovered the island's location, Napogistra orders his troops to attack it. However, Nobita, Shizuka, Suneo and Gian successfully defeat them, before Sapio and his friends reveal themselves and their circumstances as the island flies back to Chamocha, having discovered their saviors. The four then agrees to help them, since Doraemon himself has also been kidnapped by Napogistra's men. Napogistra is angered by the loss, but then the robot troops receive a message about Burikin's island returning.

Afterwards, the island lands on Chamocha's pole, but General Nejirin, Napogistra's second-in-command, has discovered its location and reports this to him, much to Napogistra's delight. Meanwhile, the main characters alongside Sapio and his friends are making a plan, which involves finding his father's invention to overthrow the robot king. Nejirin then commands his troops to destroy the island and go capture Sapio and his friends. However, since the labyrinth is too complex, the soldiers expire before reaching them. Thanks to Doraemon's help, the protagonists find out about Burikin's invention and its nature as a floppy disk containing a virus, which can be used to destroy the central system that are controlling the robots in the capital city, which is inside Napogistra himself.

Thanks to strategy, the main characters manage to lure the robot minions out to fight their living gigantic plushes, allowing Nobita and Doraemon to invade the palace and face Napogistra himself. Doraemon then shoots the disk into Napogistra's mouth, before escaping with Nobita, much to Napogistra's anger. At the same time, Sapio and Shizuka manage to free all the Chamochans from prison. Napogistra then uses his hive mind power to order his troops to find the Earthlings that are invading the city. However, the disk starts to show its effect, causing Napogistra and thus consequently all robot inhabitants in the city to act crazily, singing "Itomaki no Uta" while turning their hands over and over. Napogistra then collapses and dies, with his corpse being consumed by the flame that is engulfing the city.

Trivia[]

  • Napogistra's name is a combination of Napoleon, Genghis Khan, and Hitler.
  • Napogistra symbolizes Fujiko F. Fujio's message about humanity's misuse of technology can potentially leading to it backfiring on them. In fact, Napogistra's greatest invention, the image computer, symbolizes Fujiko's worry that humanity's over-reliance on technology can make them weaker. This is pointed out by Duke Burikin, and Sapio says at the end of the movie that the Chamochans have relied on technology for so long that they have to restore their physical strengths before rebuilding the capital city.
  • Napogistra can be considered to be an evil counterpart of Doraemon himself, as both of them are advanced and intelligent robots created to help humans via their various gadgets, but while Doraemon is friendly and treats everyone as equal, Napogistra is a supremacist who seeks to enslave and eventually kill all humans and allow the robots to reign unopposed. As such, Napogistra serves as an example of what Doraemon could've become had the latter chose to overthrow humans instead of helping them.
