Napoleon "Leo" Usher is a supporting antagonist in the 2023 gothic horror series The Fall of the House of Usher.

He is the illegitimate and overall middle child of Roderick Usher, a prominent video-games developer and serial adulterer and drug addict.

He is portrayed by Rahul Kohli, who also portrayed Scarecrow in Harley Quinn.

Personality[]

Despite a cool, placid exterior, Leo is an addict to both substances and adultery. As his addiction spirals, he becomes increasingly more paranoid and doubtful of his sanity. He shows resolute determination when dealing with the "cat" that torments him.

Biography[]

Background[]

On New Year's Eve 1980, Leo's father and aunt, Madeline Usher, made a deal with Verna guaranteeing them both unparalleled power and wealth. However, the deal was subject to the condition that any bloodline created by Roderick or Madeline would die early, but also share in their power. Despite this, due to Verna's suspiciousness, Madeline and Roderick struggle to believe their deal was legitimate, and ignore it.

Roderick later fathered numerous illegitimate children, including Leo. Leo became a prominent video game developer and started a relationship with Julius, who owns a black cat named Pluto. However, their relationship became clouded by illicit sexual affairs with both other men and women.

The Fall of the House of Usher[]

Leo is visited by his younger brother, Prospero, in preparation of his self-indulgent orgy nightclub. Prospero asks for drugs which Leo supplies some of. Later, Leo has a drug-fuelled binge with Julius as he mourns the death of his brother and sister, Camille L'Espanaye. When he wakes up, he spies blood splatters on his flooring. Tracing the splatters, he sees that the mutilated corpse of Pluto, Julius' cat.

Believing that he murdered Pluto, Leo frantically sanitises the house and disposes of the cat. He goes to a pet shop ran by Verna, who offers him the chance to adopt three cats up for euthanasia, and encourages him to adopt them instead. Despite this attempt at allowing his redemption, Leo purchases an identical black cat hoping Leo does not notice. However, this cat begins acting strangely, such as by being overly aggressive, then leaving dead vermin and birds across the house.

The cat then begins scaring Leo by jumping out of cupboards, attacking him profusely and overall tormenting him to the point of insanity. Leo invites Verna over for her advice, where she tells him the cat is in his walls. This causes Leo to have a full psychotic breakdown, using a sledgehammer, he eventually smashes through almost every available space in the walls to find the cat.

It is revealed that Leo had been hallucinating Pluto's murder, the aggressive new cat and the vermin, but Leo is still unaware of this. When he sees the cat once again, he begins frantically swinging at it with the hammer. This carries over to the balcony, where Leo falls to his death. Leo's death is treated as a suicide.

Trivia[]

  • Leo's namesake comes from Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Spectacles.
