~ Narmer's mantra. |
Narmer are major antagonists in the MMO third-person shooter Warframe.
They are a system-wide empire established by the Sentients after their second, successful invasion of the Origin System. The organic populace is kept complacent and loyal by "Narmer Veils," metal masks that brainwash the wearer via hypnosis and the exploitation of emotional weaknesses.
After the death of their leader Ballas and the destruction of most of their military fleet, Narmer's grasp on the Origin System slipped away and allowed the previous balance of power to be restored. The remaining veiled and Sentient members now attempt to restore their dominion under the leadership of Pazuul.
History[]
The New War[]
The Sentients had won. Grineer, Corpus, and Tenno alike set aside their differences to fight off their invasion, but the Sentients were too powerful and vast in numbers. Ballas was crowned the new emperor of the Origin System and ushered in a new "era of peace and security." because nobody would be left to question their new masters. The construction of the Narmer Veils allowed Narmer to subdue the chaotic organics of the Origin System in tranquil bliss, obedient and without errant thought, with no distinction made between adult or child.

Narmer controls the Origin System.
Narmer reigned supreme for years, until the sudden appearance of a mysterious Drifter, working to undermine Ballas' machinations and free the people from the veils. Although just a nuisance at first, this Drifter was actually an alternate reality counterpart to the Tenno that Ballas had cast into the Void and in possession of the remains of Natah. The Drifter infiltrated a Narmer Veil production plant outside of the Fortunat debt-internment colony and stole both a ship and a Veil, afterwards travelling to Uranus to enlist the help of former Sentient leader Hunhow and his guardian the Stalker, hoping to hunt down the Archons, Narmer's enforcers in the Origin System and take their crystal cores to restore Natah back to full strength.
The defeat of two of the three Archons did not go unnoticed by Emperor Ballas and his right hand Erra, the former of which anticipated that Natah would come for him in revenge for having manipulated her and left her to die, ordering the assembly of his fleet around the Sun. Natah's inherent control over Sentient drones allowed her to take control over a Murex ship and gave chase, just as Ballas had hoped she would. Meanwhile, the still-living Tenno and the Drifter met in the Void and made an alliance, one of them returning to the Origin System to pursue the Lotus before Ballas could retake control over her weakened self.

Ballas' throne aboard Praghasa.
Finding no more use in the Origin System, Ballas decided that Praghasa, Narmer's flagship and the braindead remains of Erra and Natah's mother, should finally fulfill her purpose and consume the Sun itself, both destroying the entire Origin System and generating enough energy with which Ballas could transport himself to the Sentient home system of Tau to start anew. Realizing Ballas' madness, Erra turned against him and sacrificed himself to aid the Tenno/Drifter in reaching the final Archon, obtain their core and save his sister.
Unfortunately Ballas stole the Archon shard and took control of Natah, ordering her to kill her own adoptive child for him. The final battle commenced at his throne room and although Ballas had the upper hand, he was ultimately defeated by having a Narmer Veil shoved into his face and willingly let Natah drain him of his life, putting an end to his reign.
Veilbreaker[]
With Ballas dead, Praghasa (seemingly) destroyed and a large portion of their Murex fleet obliterated, Narmer lost most of their former influence over the Origin System. But while the former ruling factions managed to regain their grip on the system, Narmer was far from history. The Narmer Veils were still active and the remaining loyalists rallied under Ballas' martyrdom, using what few resources they had left to resurrect the Archons to lead them once again. They also managed to retrieve Erra's corpse and used it to raise a new fourth Archon, the most intelligent of them all who would become their new ruler: The ram-headed Pazuul.
With their command structure restored, Narmer's factories were put back to work and they started to kidnap people to add to their numbers. The prisoners they still had on their remaining Murex ships were also used to refill their ranks, but one of them managed to resist the influence of the Veil. Grineer lancer Kahl-175 broke free and tried to get someone to help rescue him. The Grineer ignored his calls for aid, but the Tenno answered him and extracted Kahl and the few prisoners he managed to release.
Back at their camp, the Tenno and Kahl formed a new alliance with the explicit purpose of destroying Pazuul and ensuring Narmer never returns to full strength. While the Tenno strike Narmer's forces head on and hunt down the resurrected Archons, Kahl and his team infiltrate their outposts, sabotage their factories and rescue as many of their prisoners as possible.
For Narmer[]
As the Drifter descends into the fallen city of Fortuna, they hear the Solaris sing a song to honor their graceful leader Ballas. Once proud and determined to fight against the oppressive rule of Nef Anyo, the Narmer Veils have drained all resistance and led them to thank Ballas for taking away the very freedom they once fought so hard to gain.

Trivia[]
- The name of Ballas' new system-wide empire is named after the Egyptian pharaoh Narmer, who was said to have united the upper and lower kingdoms and thus the first ruler of all of Egypt, much like how Narmer unified the splintered populace of the Origin System under one supreme ruler.
