They say history is written by the victors, not sure what that means though. Anyway... you can go to hell, but only after experiencing true despair as you watch me thoroughly pulverize that streaker and that teacher.
~ Naruha Sakuragi.
Oh? The teacher's pet is up first? But a teacher's pet is supposed to wait her turn.
~ Naruha to Hasami before their battle.

Naruha Sakuragi, simply known as Naru, is a minor antagonist in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.

She is a member of Scavenger, a mercenary organization from the dark side of Academy City that serves the board of directors. She serves as the group's primary combatant, being a Level 3 esper with the combat potential of a Level 4.

She's voiced by Aoi Koga in Japanese and Sarah Wiedenheft in English.

Appearance[]

Naruha is a teenage girl with shoulder length purple hair and matching eyes. She has a developed figure with a big chest. She also purple skull tattoo under her left eye.

She wears a bunny maid outfit made entirely out of paper, with thigh-high socks, detached cuffs, a maid headband, and a bunny tail at the back. Her costume made of paper has two variations: the first being short-sleeved and having skimpy shorts while the second one are long-sleeved and has a skirt instead. She is able to change in between those two variations of her costume using her powers.

Personality[]

Out of the Scavengers, Naru is the most childish and immature member of the group. She displays cheerful and energetic behavior, often making light of certain situations. However, like her comrades, she's extremely merciless, cruel and bloodthirsty when it comes to doing her job of killing others, showing practically no remorse or guilt for her actions. Moreover, similar to her teammates, Naru holds immense hatred towards teachers and educators, viewing them as the source of evil in Academy City. She believes by eliminating all teachers, including the "principal", she'll make the city a better place.

Furthermore, Naru is noticeably more sadistic than the rest of Scavenger and has little regard for the lives of others, willing to destroy just about anyone in her way regardless of who they are. Her sadism is best shown when she brutally shattered a DA member's body which was previously frozen by Yakumaru's coolant, even though he was already dead. She is also rather arrogant and confident in her abilities to the point where she rarely ever praise someone other than herself. In addition to despising teachers, Naru displays resentment towards anyone she deems as a "teacher's pet" and enjoys picking fights with them.

As part of her childish personality, Naru can be rather ditzy, as she tends to come up with outlandish ideas to tell her teammates, and often lacks awareness of what's going on, as she nearly foiled Leader's plan to persuade Mikoto Misaka by revealing the truth about their role as dark side affiliates. She's also somewhat gullible, as she was easily convinced by Yakurmaru's act that she tries to look for the person who beated her up. However, she's smart enough to take full advantage of her teammate's abilities during battle.

Naru also lacks any modesty, as her "paper powered armor" exposes most of her skin and torso with only small pieces of paper covering her private parts. She doesn't care about being exposed, and seems confused about why other people would have issues suddenly stripping naked. She also shows no reluctance to getting naked in front of other people, something that distresses her colleagues. Additionally, Naru has no sense of boundaries and has little qualms with undressing others, as shown when she stripped Seike down to his underwear to put him into a paper made outfit.

Despite her ruthlessness, Naru is shown to greatly care about her teammates and is deeply loyal to them. She's fiercely protective of her comrades to the point where she'll become incredibly wrathful and vindictive towards anyone who hurts them, best shown when she charged towards Accelerator after he defeated Seike. She also flies into a rage when the Doppelganger hurts Leader and threatens to kill Yakumaru, with her going on the warpath with the full intent to break her to pieces.

In her spare time, Naru likes to visit art museums, particularly enjoying three-dimensional exhibits. She was initially skeptical about occult subjects like horoscopes. However, she started believing in them after she received an extremely negative horoscope in the same week as Scavenger's defeat by Accelerator.

Biography[]

Naru's background is largely unknown, but it can be assumed that she had some sort of a traumatic event with a teacher that caused her to develop a hatred of them and led her to joining Scavenger.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Perfect Paper: Naru's Level 3 esper power and a form of psychokinesis which allows her to manipulate paper into various forms and shapes, normally carrying a large quantity of paper into battle by disguising it as her clothes and umbrella. The paper she controls has the flexibility of cloth and the strength of hardened alloy. While ranked as a Level 3, her teammates state that when combined with her combat instincts she has the skill of a Level 4. The objects she creates with her ability include:
    • Bunny Suit Armor: By using all her paper, Naru can create a bunny-like suit of armor, though the suit leaves her torso and head uncovered. This suit greatly increases Naru's speed and physical strength. Since it's made of paper, Naru can freely change its shape, such as spreading the paper to cause an enemy attack to fail, shoot her paper darts, create a long spear to pierce the enemy, transform one of her hands into a spiked hammer, create a sword or a shield, elongate her fingers into ropes, etc.
      • Excavator: Upon realizing she couldn't destroy Hasami's dirt defense with her normal attacks, Naru created a large excavator and some boosters on the back of her suit. The boosters propel her forwards as the excavator carves anything in her way.
    • Paper Vehicles: Naru is able to use paper to recreate complex machinery such as vehicles. This includes a sled and small jet plane.
    • Paper Airplanes: Naru can create several paper airplanes that will explode upon getting close to an enemy.
    • Paper Defenses: Naru can create cushions to soften physical blows or throws. She can also make several paper panels in the air as physical shields, able to easily block bullets.
    • Paper Darts: Naru can create multiple paper darts to skewer an enemy from all directions.
    • Paper Spiked Gloves: Naru can create two spiked gloves to punch the enemy.
    • Paper Double: Naru can create a paper double of a person as bait. If damaged, the paper doll can undo itself and bind the opponent as if it were a steel rope.
    • Iron Maiden: As part of Scavengers' combination attack on Accelerator, Naru used all her paper to create an iron-maiden to trap him. This iron maiden was tough enough to not suffer any visible damage from Ya's liquid thermite reaction.

Abilities[]

  • Skilled Combatant: Naru is highly proficient in close quarters combat, with her teammates stating she has the combat skills of a Level 4 esper despite only being Level 3. She's able to dodge and counter attacks from more powerful opponents like Hasami Hitokawa and the Doppelganger.
