Hi it's me. He's got six of them, and they're Gentoos. Not yet but I'll get 'em.
~ Nat on the phone with his client.
THIS IS INSANE!!!
~ Nat's last words in the film to his great anger and frustration as he is arrested by the police for his crimes while watching Popper with the penguins

Nat Jones is the main antagonist of the 2011 film Mr. Popper's Penguins.

He is the zookeeper and penguin expert of the New York Zoo as well as the arch-nemesis of Mr. Tom Popper. Despite being a successful zookeeper, Jones does not treat his animals with respect whatsoever. So much so that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the penguins into his zoo for money, even if it means having to break into Mr. Popper's home to steal them or to ruin the lives of Mr. Popper and his family.

The character was portrayed by Clark Gregg, who also played Chuck Muckle in Hoot and Sarge on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

History

Nat Jones is known to be a successful zookeeper and penguin expert who soon became head of the New York Zoo. However, it soon turns out that he does not treat his animals with any respect whatsoever and only seems to care about making money for his efforts.

Soon enough Jones finds out that Tom Popper, the co-owner of a famous large operating real estate business, owns six Gentoo penguins in his apartment home. He learns that Mr. Popper's penguins ended up in the apartment because of a misunderstanding and offers to take them off his hands. However, Mr. Popper seems interested with keeping the penguins after his family learn about it; he decides to stall Jones and succeeds by convincing him to collect them another time. Jones initially tries to persist by claiming that penguins can only survive in zoo temperatures, but eventually relents in lieu of making plans to benefit from collecting them.

However, Jones later discovers that Mr. Popper is stalling him because Popper's family is warmed up to loving the penguins as well as Popper himself. He thereafter decides to make a plan to get his hands on the penguins. When Mr. Popper leaves for a date, Jones pretends to be an IRS or a city official to get access to Mr. Popper's home. Thereupon he tries to lure the penguins into a cage, but Mr. Popper finds out and runs back home to confront Jones. Frustrated with both his plan having failed and that Popper is loving the penguins like children, he demonstrates his talent by brainwashing the penguins onto his side with raw fish. To his fury, though, Mr. Popper makes it clear that he intents to keep the penguins and Jones vows to get them from him before leaving.

A few days later, Mr. Popper calls Jones to ask if an one of the penguin's eggs laid will hatch. Jones studies and determines by data that the egg is unhatchable. While it is not fully disclosed whether he was being honest or not, Jones most likely exploited Popper's concern in order to convince him to relinquish the penguins. This works successfully as Mr. Popper, saddened to realize that he will not be getting another penguin off of the egg, reluctantly decides to donate the penguins to Jones.

By the next morning, Jones is on the phone and is more likely making plans to profit from having got the penguins. But this is soon cut short when Mr. Popper and his family confront him at his office, which causes Jones to realize that Mr. Popper has changed his mind and now wants the penguins back. To deceive them, he tries to convince them that he already traded and sold the penguins to other zoos around the world as originally planned. However, thanks to one of the loud penguins, he is exposed as lying; the penguins were imprisoned in a cooler right in the office. In revenge for his lies and trouble, Tom locks him into the cooler. Jones manages to escape thanks to his technologies and orders the Zoo exits and entrances to be locked up. However, thanks to Popper's friend Pippy, the group escapes the zoo with the penguins.

Jones calls the police and tries to have Popper and his family at a meeting in the tavern on the green. But Popper is able to show the police that the penguins love him as well as telling them how his father gave him the penguins as a gift. The penguins chooses Popper, instead of Jones' sardine, much to his delight and Jones' dismay. When realizing through investigation about how Nat Jones broke into the apartment of Mr. Popper and was willing to break the law to get the penguins, the police arrest Nat Jones for his crimes.

It implied that his position at the New York Zoo is possibly replaced with someone else after his dismissal and arrest for his crimes and he was sentenced for lengthy in prisons.

Personality

At first, Nat Jones seems to be a respected and generous man. But it soon turns out that he is actually a stingy, greedy, arrogant, cruel, selfish, and deceitful opportunist. He shows no interest in animals, considering penguins "just birds", exploiting them to sell them illegally without remorse from some zoo by separating them. He is convinced that animals only love food and always shows animals something to eat, but in the end he has to change his mind due to the fact that the penguins have chosen Popper instead of his sardines.

He also proves impatient, breaking into Popper's apartment to kidnap the penguins, breaking the law, and he doesn't even thank his employees for getting him out of things Popper put him in, rather for not taking less time.

It is towards the end of the film that Jones loses his clarity, as he easily gets angry if things don't go his way: he starts stalking Popper and tries to lock him in the zoo, and calls the police saying that he is the one who broke. Jones reads it, and when the penguins choose Popper over his fish, he becomes hysterical and yells at everyone because they don't want to arrest Popper.

Overall, Jones prefers to frame others rather than kill them and refuses to accept defeat even when everyone realizes he is the culprit, screaming that it is madness for Popper to take care of the penguins.
