~ Nat pathetically defending Monsignor Wicks.

Dr. Nathaniel "Nat" Sharp is the secondary antagonist of the 2025 Netflix religious mystery film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third installment in Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out franchise.

He is the local town doctor of Chimney Rock, a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude, and a divorcee who has resorted to alcoholism. When Monsignor Jefferson Wicks threatens to publicly expose his habit of practicing while drunk, he agrees to become Martha Delacroix's accomplice to kill Wicks and steal the Eve's Apple diamond that carries the Wicks family fortune.

He was portrayed by Jeremy Renner, who also portrayed Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 film Dahmer, Tommy Papouli in The House, and Brian Gamble in S.W.A.T.

Biography[]

A local doctor, Dr. Nathaniel Sharp was divorced by his wife Darla, who took their two children along with her with Tuscon. Nat later joined Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude, alongside Vera and Cy Draven, Simone Vivane, and Lee Ross.

During a meeting with the church's Monsignor Jefferson Wicks and the other members, Wicks revealed to them that he is Cy's biological father and that he knew Nat was operating on patients while drunk, vowing to report it to the medical board to ruin Nat, out of plain contempt for Nat.

Nat is approached by the church's secretary Martha Delacroix who conspires with him to murder Wicks in order to obtain the diamond hidden inside his grandfather's tomb. Nat laces Wicks' flask to make him fall unconscious in a closet while Father Jud Duplenticy, who had been feuding with Wicks, is giving a sermon. Everyone goes over to the closet and Nat examines Wicks' body while Martha distracts them, allowing Nat to stab Wicks in the back with a blade fashioned into an adornment from the local bar, killing him. However, Nat can't see the flask, worrying him. Jud becomes the top suspect for Wicks' murder.

With the help of groundskeeper Samson Holt, Nat and Martha make it seem like Wicks has risen from his tomb, which is caught on camera footage. It is witnessed by Jud, who watches Samson approach Nat, who Jud believes to be Samson. They walk into a forest and are chased by Jud, who Samson knocks unconscious. Planning to steal the diamond for himself, Nat fatally stabs Samson in the chest with a sickle before leaving the sickle in the hand of the unconscious Jud. Nat flees and Jud is found by Detective Benoit Blanc, who sees him holding the sickle.

Blanc stops Jud from turning himself in and they realize that two adornments were stolen from the bar, one by Jud and one by Nat. They start driving towards Nat's house.

Martha arrives at Nat's house, where he is keeping Wicks' body. Martha reveals the diamond and Nat attempts to poison her with pentobarbital in her tea, but she switches the drinks when he's not looking. Poisoned, Nat rushes upstairs, presumably find and to treat himself with his medication or call for an ambulance, but drops dead. Martha puts Nat's body into a tub and sets up Wicks' body to make it look like he was submerging Nat into the tub. Martha fills up the tub with a corrosive acid, melting Nat's flesh off down to the bone.

After Martha leaves, Jud and Blanc arrive at Nat's house, finding the tub. Blanc drains it, revealing Nat's skeleton and that the flesh on Wicks' arms was melted off. Blanc calls Chief Geraldine Scott, informing her of the incident.

In the end, the truth about Nat and Martha is revealed. Martha poisons herself with pentobarbital shortly before confessing everything to Blanc, Jud, and Scott.

Trivia[]

  • Nat Sharp is the first murderer in the Knives Out franchise to die/be killed.
  • Ironically, a reference to Jeremy Renner was made in Glass Onion prior to Renner being cast in Wake Up Dead Man.
  • Though he is technically a pawn working for the main antagonist Martha Delacroix, he is far more evil than her due to the fact Martha wasn't greedy in planning to steal the diamond for herself, rather wanting to destroy it.
  • Jeremy Renner starred with Josh Brolin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
