Natarle Badgiruel is an antagonist in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Personality[]

Compared to her colleague Murrue's more caring and emotional methods, she takes on a more pragmatic approach to making decisions, thus being less emotional and caring and more stricter and by-the-book. This constant soldier mentality is found by most to be the least likable, thought it also maintains perspective in terms of tactical and military decisions.

Strongly loyal to the Earth Alliance, she lived with almost all of their decisions, even in spite of being shocked that her superiors were planning to sacrifice her former crewmates along with the Eurasian Federation forces at the Battle of JOSH-A. After watching the use of nuclear missiles on the ZAFT fortress Boaz, Natarle began to seriously doubt her conscience. When Azrael orders the Dominion to kill Captain Ramius and the rest of her former crewmates on board the Archangel, she does defy his orders.

Despite appearing to be calculating, she does have a softer side that is just heavily covered by her hardened exterior, resulting in her peers misinterpreting her character. Driven by her sense of duty and emotional protective nature, she never showed her softer side for others to appreciate. It was only in the final moments of her life that she finally broke her mold and listened to her conscience.

Powers and Abilities[]

Natarle is a skilled tactical officer, excelling in ship combat tactics, even outmaneuvering the Archangel during the first battle in which it and the Dominion met. Furthermore, she knows how to adapt to the environment to her advantage, thus allowing her to attack decisively. Trained to be a career soldier, she's capable at piloting ships and using firearms.

Biography[]

First Alliance-PLANT War[]

Battle of Heliopolis[]

She was part of a secret project in Orb's Heliopolis colony producing weapons equal to ZAFTs mobile suits. When ZAFT's Le Creuset team raid the colony to seize the new weapons, some her comrades are lost in the scuffle, but she is among the survivors. Although an Ensign, she temporarily assumes command of the Archangel, as she was among the highest ranking officers still alive. She then hands over command of the ship to Lt. Murrue Ramius and becomes the executive officer of the Archangel and supervises the ship's Combat Information Center, effectively becoming 2nd-in-command. She holds qualms about permitting Kira Yamato, a Coordinator, to remain on board the ship as the Strike's pilot, but Murrue believes otherwise.

Battle of Artemis[]

Eventually, the Archangel crew reach the Eurasian Federation's Artemis Base, with Major General Gerard Garcia as the base commander. However, he has the Archangel under his custody, due to the latter not having an ID code. The ship's top officers then have a meeting with him, who doesn't seem to be very cooperative with the crew and is too confident in the barrier protecting the base. The higher ups later confine the Archangel's top command in a room, much to Natarle's annoyance. Later, ZAFT launches its attack on Artemis for housing the Archangel, and Natarle escapes with Mu and Murrue after they trick the Eurasian Federation troops guarding the door into opening up. After returning to their stations, the Archangel tries to make its way out as the ZAFT forces wreak havoc looking for the ship.

Skirmish Near Junius Seven[]

After getting out of that tight situation, the Archangel continues, but eventually runs low on water. The crew decide to search the Debris Belt to salvage for drifting supplies. There they come across the ruins of the destroyed Junius Seven colony, and Natarle, Kira, Tolle, and Miriallia were shocked upon looking at the ruins close up during their search. Back at the bridge, Natarle reports about the water, but Kira wasn't so sure about taking from a place where a significant tragedy occurred. However, Mu, who also points out that no one is really celebrating the discovery, and Murrue agree with the logical reasoning behind Natarle's idea. The Archangel crew then throw origami flowers into the ruins while they mourn the innocent lives lost in the ruins. Afterwards, the crew pick up the ice, but also end up with a rescue pod taken in by Kira, with Natarle sarcastically remarking that he seemed to like picking up things abandoned by others. After the pod opens, Lacus Clyne, the daughter of PLANT Supreme Council chairman Siegel Clyne, comes out, which surprises Natarle and the rest of the crew a bit. Later on, Natarle and the other two highest ranking commanders would speak with Lacus about her whereabouts.

In the later scuffle that ensued, the Archangel was among the protectors of the Vice Foreign Minister and Flay Allster's father George Allster. However, the ZAFT pursuers manage to sink the ship the Vice Foreign Minister was on, and they finally stopped attacking after Natarle reveals that Lacus was onboard.

Battle of Orbit[]

The Archangel then rendezvous with Admiral Lewis Halberton and his 8th Fleet. Natarle says that they can't afford to let Kira leave and suggests taking his parents hostage, but Admiral Halberton rebukes her. During the battle, she is one of the commanding voices, but also had some occasional disagreements with Murrue.

Nevertheless, Natarle is a superb tactical analyst with keen judgment and a knack for swift decision-making, which made her a valuable asset to the Archangel. When they finally arrive at JOSH-A, Natarle was transferred to a shore assignment. In their last encounter before departure, Captain Ramius thanks Natarle and says she will make a fine captain someday.

When ZAFT launched a surprise attack on JOSH-A in an effort to wipe out of the Alliance, the Archangel and Eurasian forces were dispatched to deal with them, Atlantic Federation personnel secretly made their escape. Natarle was among them. However, she overheard a few soldiers discussing the Atlantic Federation's plan to use a secret Cyclops system underneath JOSH-A to wipe out the ZAFT forces at the sacrifice the base and its defenses. The Eurasian forces and the Archangel were unwanted by the Blue Cosmos controlled Atlantic Federation for the following reasons: the Eurasian Federation's more moderate stance towards Coordinators and Kira Yamato, a Coordinator, being a member of the Archangel's crew.

The Dominion[]

Natarle was eventually promoted to Lt. Commander and was reassigned to command as the new Captain of the Dominion, the Archangel's sister ship. While attempting training exercises with her crew, a representative from the Defense Committee Muruta Azrael boards the Dominion as an observer, explaining that they are to hunt down and destroy the Archangel, which had survived the battle of JOSH-A and had gone rogue. Tragically, she is forced to battle her former crew at the Mendel colony. At first, she tried to appeal to her former crew to come back to the Alliance. However, Murrue politely declined, explaining that they have serious doubts about Alliance forces in general, since Blue Cosmos was in control. Azrael then mocked Natarle's attempts to solve things through negotiation and then orders the Calamity, Raider and Forbidden to launch and attack. Through Natarle's strategies, they were able to outmaneuver the Archangel, until firing support from the Eternal and Kusanagi helped turn the tide of the battle.

ZAFT launched a life pod carrying Flay Allster, carrying data on the Neutron Jammer Canceller. Natarle ordered for her retrieval and with her arrival into the Dominion, Flay presented them with the disk which interested Azrael to put this technology to use by using it for nuclear weapons to use against the PLANTs.

Battle of Boaz - Operation Peacemaker[]

The Dominion then joined the Alliance fleet to topple ZAFT's Space Fortress Boaz. After the Dominion and the main forces decimated a large amount of the ZAFT defenders, the Peacemaker Force, consisting of the Moebius armed with the nuclear weaponry carried out the final shots on the base, a scene that she starts having concerns about and then questions Azrael's decision.

Later, she meets with Flay for bit, the latter who talks about her feelings of sorrow and guilt over the events that have occurred. The Peacemaker Force later heads for the PLANT colonies, only to be intercepted by the Freedom and Justice and followed by Lacus Clyne trying to reason with the Alliance forces. Then, ZAFT unveiled its ultimate weapon GENESIS, which eliminates a lot of Alliance ships and machines, and Natarle would witness in shock.

Battle of Jachin Due[]

In the final battle against the ZAFT forces, Azrael snaps and orders that every last nuclear missile be fired at the PLANTs, ignoring Natarle's constant pleas for him to rethink his orders as that would not eliminate the threat of the GENESIS to the Earth. Azrael, becoming too obsessed with the destruction of the PLANTs, then threatened to shoot her for insubordination. When the Archangel came into view, Azrael demanded that she destroy that ship of traitors once and for all, an order which Natarle was reluctant to carry out. In the ensuing fight, both ships were heavily damaged. Natarle wished with all her heart that her former crewmates could just end this.

Demise[]

When the Dominion's Lohengrin is prepared for operation, Flay, who took the place of the communication officer at the time, tried to warn the Archangel, causing Azrael to attack and aim his gun at her. Natarle, finally listening to her conscience, held him back, ordering her crew to abandon ship and encouraged Flay to go to the Archangel. In their struggle, Natarle is shot, forcing her to release Azrael, who attempts escape from the soon to be doomed ship, only to be trapped by Natarle inside the bridge, and Azrael shoots her several times to get her to unlock the door. Not wanting to die with failure and believing his enemies to be finished, he attempted to fire the remaining Lohengrin shot, only for it to be intercepted by Mu in the heavily damaged Strike Gundam. She mocks him one last time saying that he's already lost before taking another gunshot from him. In her last moment, bravely sacrificing her life to defeat him, she called for Murrue to fire her ship's Lohengrin cannon at them.

Second Alliance-PLANT War[]

Although Natarle does not appear in the second war, she does show up in some of Mu's recovered memories after he snaps out of his brainwashed Neo Roanoke identity and becomes reminded of his true self.
