Nathaniel Hawthorne, also known as the Masked Assassin, is a supporting antagonist in the Bungo Stray Dogs manga and anime.
He is a former member of The Guild and later a member of Rats in the House of the Dead, serving as an assassin under Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He is based on American author of the same name.
He was voiced by Tarusuke Shingaki, who has also voiced Big Brother in Catherine Full Body, in Japanese, and Matthew Mercer, who has also voiced Ganondorf in Era of the Wilds, Goro Majima in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Prince Diamond in Sailor Moon Crystal, Haiji Towa in Danganronpa, Midas in Fortnite, Deadshot in Injustice 2, Kiritsugu Emiya in Fate/Zero, Anarky in Batman: Arkham Origins, Aiden in Minecraft: Story Mode and Mr. Freeze in Batman: The Enemy Within.
Biography[]
Nathaniel Hawthorne is an Ability user who worked in The Guild as a partner of Margaret Mitchell. During their arrival in Japan, Hawthorne and Mitchell were present on Guild's ship, Zelda. However, the ship was destroyed by Motojirou Kajii of Port Mafia and both Americans were attacked by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. Although they managed to survive, Mitchell was heavily wounded and went into coma. Disappointed in The Guild, Hawthorne left and joined Fyodor Dostoyevski to get his revenge on Akutagawa.
Some time later, after being brainwashed by Fyodor, Nathaniel attacked Yukichi Fukuzawa in Yokohama. He managed to defeat him and poison him with A Feast in Time of Plague - an ability of Alexander Pushkin. Hawthorne later attacks Ougai Mori and explodes his car, which allows Fyodor to stab him. Although Hawthorne is unmasked by Akutagawa, he manages to escape.
During the Hunting Dogs arc, Hawthorne attacks Francis Scott Key Fitzegerald in his new headquarters and wounds Louisa May Alcott. Fitzgerald defeats him and Hawthorne escapes through the window.
Hawthorne is later present at Sky Casino, attacking Atsushi Nakajima outside the casino and shots him with his blood. Lucy Maud Montgomery saves Atsushi by transporting him into Anne's Room; however, Nathaniel also gets there. Lucy then catches him with Anne and locks him in the cell in the Room.
Abilities[]
- The Scarlet Letter: Hawthorne's ability allows him to manipulate his own blood. While activated, the Ability converts Hawthorne's blood into letters (referencing real-life Hawthorne's book), which he considers to be the Word of God. Using his blood, he can also levitate in the air.
- Spell Bullet: Hawthorne can infuse something with his blood, which he can later remotely control.
