~ Renko after killing both Demichev and Barisov and choosing to rule the world alone. |
Captain Nathaniel "Nate" Renko is the main protagonist of the video game Singularity. Renko later becomes the villain protagonist of the game depending on player choice. Throughout the game, Renko lacks any portrayal of appearance or personality, and he can either bring an end to the terrible reign of Dr. Nikolai Demichev as a hero, or join him as the villain, if not live and rule the world alone as a dark messiah. In two out of three endings, Renko becomes an evil, power-hungry official.
Biography[]
Renko's backstory was that of a U.S. Recon Marine soldier, supposedly having the rank of Captain due to his skill in combat. He and fellow marine James Devlin are sent to investigate a strange EMP on the Russian island Katorga-12. While on a helicopter on the way to the small island, a surge of energy reoccurs, disabling the helicopter and sending them crash-landing on the island. Renko mysteriously starts alternating through timelines for 2010 and 1955, and in the 1955 timeline, he saves an innocent man from a fire, unknowingly unleashing a complete monster to the world. Back in 2010, Katorga-12, and the rest of Russia were under the dictatorship of Dr. Nikolai Demichev.
No matter what Renko does by the end of the game, he had corrupted the entire world, proving how powerful time can be. After being rescued by Kathryn Norvikova, Renko gains access to the Time Manipulation Device, and opens a rift to 1955 and prevents Demichev from killing a scientist Kathryn told him about named Viktor Barisov, creator of the TMD. Demichev survived his encounter with Renko, and Barisov and Renko worked together to end Demichev's reign, serving as the bigger good and the chosen one respectively. They fuse a bomb of E-99 tech that appears to be radioactive yet futuristic, defeating the Zek King in the process. However, in order to activate the bomb, they needed Element 99, and Renko went back to 1955 to activate the bomb in a E-99 factory called the Cooker. Charging the bomb in 1955 resulted in an eruption due to it being shabbier, and back in the present, Demichev is holding Barisov at gunpoint as Renko points at Demichev with his Centurion pistol.
Alternate Endings[]
Even if chosen to be the hero and kill Demichev, Barisov would reveal his true colors and rule the world for himself, taking advantage of Renko's heroic sacrifice. The world will fall into chaos, either at Renko's hands, or at Barisov's. Instead, Renko can reveal himself as a self-centered, corrupted, power-hungry individual, by killing Barisov, the good guy, or being a self-centered, corrupted, power-hungry psychopath, and kill both of them.
- Chancellor Demichev is the only survivor of Katorga-12. Any mention of Barisov... is wiped from history. With the TMD at your disposal, you and Demichev now control the Singularity. Katorga-12 becomes pivotal in Demichev's final push: To remove all remnants of rebellion against his leadership. As commander of the military, you forged Demichev's forces into an unstoppable war machine. You even trained some of the islands creatures in combat. You used them as a first wave assault, in all major battles. Millions are forced into slave labor. With the full power of the Singularity, and you at the helm of the military, any pockets of resistance around the world... are weeded out. MIR-12 (the main heroic faction of the game) proves difficult at first, but with the TMD by your side, they do not stand a chance. In the years that follow, tensions build within a ruling Russian dictatorship. Your knowledge of advanced weaponry, and control of the TMD, allows your support to grow. Some believe you are more powerful... than Chancellor Demichev himself. Demichev recognizes this, and he begins a secret weapons development program in the former United States. There are even rumors he's created his own TMD. Conflict seems inevitable, as the world once again finds itself in the midst of a cold war between two superpowers.
Powers and Abilities[]

Nathaniel Renko leads his army of soldiers and trained Zeks
Nathaniel Renko is considered the strongest person in the world, with the TMD granting him supernatural capabilities. As the villain protagonist of the game, he becomes even more powerful, leading legions of mutant creatures known as Zeks into combat. By himself, he serves as a one-man army. Towards the end of the game, he gains infinite energy in his TMD, able to manipulate the battlefield around him to his whim, becoming an unstoppable force. He is even hailed as a legend, a myth, and a god after his disappearance. His knowledge of advanced weaponry continues to grow after his fall from grace, and he proves to be capable of using them to an expert's extent. Being younger and more capable than Demichev, Renko will likely continue to be stronger than him, as he is shown surpassing great odds as a hero, and with the resources, increased physical and political power, and following he now has, he can rightfully be considered stronger than his heroic counterpart. The various weapons he has are listed here, and his TMD powers are listed below.

|
Seeker Rifle | This rifle fires E-99 charged shells that alter time and allow the operator to control the bullet.
|
Autocannon | Heavy cannon that uses an automatic load system coupled with a high capacity 100 round clip. Unmatched rate of fire for extended combat engagements.
Does not have a scope Requires time to charge up, much like a Minigun |
Spikeshot | E-99 charged rail gun that fires an explosive spike. Each shot requires a brief delay to fully charge rail.

Gravity Manipulation |
Telekinetically pulls targeted object into Nate's left hand, where it hovers, and can be launched. Used with explosive/cryogenic barrels * Allows him to catch any explosive projectile before contact * Allows him to steal shields from enemies |
Deadlock | Renko creates a sphere of clear blue energy, that when launched becomes a force field within which everything slows down in time by an extreme amount |
Chronolight |
* Allows Renko to pull objects previously existant in a certain location back (location of these objects are signified by a blue cloud) * The glowing blue writing on the walls seen throughout the game are warnings that past Renko wrote to warn his future self. Chronolight is used to turn the partially erased Chrono-Notes into legible notes |
ChronoPing | Shows glowing footsteps left by his past self to show him where to go |
Upgrades | The TMD has many upgrades grantable to Renko located in areas around Katorga-12 |
Other abilities | He may use an ability similar to "Revert" to train the Zeks, as this was an ability he only gained after he became evil, among potentially other unseen abilities he's gained. |
Natural Abilities[]
Renko has always shown immense talent in using weaponry, and is quick to master those with advanced E-99 tech as well. This may be why he had the rank of "Captain". His knowledge of advanced weaponry is implied to have increased after gaining more power and influence over the world. He is shown to be very quick to adapt to situations, as he and Devlin fought multiple mutated creatures on their first encounter, something that no matter how skilled you are in the military, would be near impossible to do. This was before he got the TMD, as after, he was able to pass unsurpassable odds. Since there is no official ending to the game, it is unknown if Renko will ever be killed, or die, or if he'll ever unlock semi-immortality.
