I am the fourteenth Noah who destroys everything. I am Nea.
~ Nea D.Campbell
You all...keep prattling on about the fourteenth. You don't seem to realize that...earlier Noah slapped that nickname on me out of spite! I hate it. I really do. Using it does not endear you to me. Remember this you simpletons. My name is Nea D. Campbell. And I decide who's my ally and who's my family! No one else!
~ Nea to Tyki Mikk and Howard Link upon calling him The Fourteenth.

Nea D. Campbell is a major antagonist in the D.Gray-man series.

Nea D. Campbell or more commonly known as The Fourteenth was a traitor to the Noah Family and is responsible for killing all the Noah 35 years ago save for the Earl and Road who survived the massacre. After failing to kill the Earl he was forced to flee and made a pact with Cross Marian to protect his twin brother Mana. He is the original owner of Timcanpy. Eventually Nea was killed by the Earl at some point and devoured him and has now reincarnated inside the body of Allen Walker. He serves as the arch-nemeses to both Allen Walker and the Earl. In truth both Nea and his older twin brother Mana are the original Millennium Earl.

He is voiced by Sanae Kobayashi in his shadow form and by Ayumu Murase in his Noah form in Japanese and by Jerry Jewell in English.

Appearance[]

When Nea first appears in both the anime and the manga he appears as a shadowy figure with a cloak. When he appears in the Earl's mind he appears as a young man with dark colored hair.

In his Noah form, Nea appears to be a young man of average height with short, dark hair, with a line of stigmata across his forehead. He wears a dress-shirt, waistcoat, a simple cravat, an overcoat, and white gloves. His facial features are noted by both Wisely and Allen he bears a striking resemblance to Tyki Mikk. Nea himself is troubled by the fact that Tyki face is familiar to him.

When he is inside Allen's body, he has vertical slit-like pupils akin to the Earl of Millennium, therefore it can be assumed that his full-Noah form has the same.

In his human form, his skin is fair and his hair is a dark brown.

Personality[]

Nea is a very mysterious man, not much is known about him. When he first appeared as a shadowy figure, he doesn't say much and only leave few hints behind. Later when appearing in front of Allen he speaks gently towards him bearing no ill towards him, despite the fact that he will consume Allen's body one day. Nea main intent is to exact revenge on the Millennium Earl upon his rebirth, his motives for this are unknown, although through a conversation with Cross Marian and Allen, Cross implies that Nea discovered a third side to the war between the Noah family and the Black Order, possibly that the Earl is not the messiah of the Noah family.

Nea has openly stated that he wishes to be the Millennium Earl, he also can be ruthless at times such as striking Johnny just to converse with Timcanpy. Nea cared deeply for his brother Mana Walker and was very close to him. Road once claimed that Nea had fought on behalf of his brother. Wisely moreover states that Nea 35 years ago experienced the terror that there is nowhere for a Noah to hide from the other Noah.

He is shown to be a very self-confident person as he provokes the Earl several times even when in the presence of the other Noah family members. He goes as far as to reveal a shocking truth to an unstable Earl as he is alone and not used to his new body. He took delight in pushing the Earl into such a state, he furthermore shows a sadistic and devious side of him. He is also extremely manipulative, easily capable of impersonating Allen in front of his friends. However Allen close friends can distinguish the truth as seen in the case of Howard Link, Lenalee and even Kanda.

Link further states that Nea has a cold murderous intent when he takes over Allen's body. Nea hates humans and prefers to act on his own, in fact he only allied with Cross Marian out of necessity, he dislikes other people help. He deeply cares for his own golem Timcanpy and was devastated when informed of his fate. Despite Nea hatred for humans, he did show a degree of kindness to them this is clearly shown when he warned the Finders that were sent to capture Allen to run away as the Earl was going to kill them, he seemed pained that he couldn't save them from the Earl. Nea is a lonely person despite this, stating that he would rather do things alone. Though according to the previous Bookman Jr. Nea is the kind of person who was trouble admitting he is friends with someone but still cares for them deeply.

Nea is a proud man he deems it only he can choose his own family and allies. He is also shown to be quite sensitive as he attempted to activate his Innocence because of Tyki kept referring to him as "The Fourteenth" instead of by his real name. The Earl has admitted that Nea was his favorite Noah. Nea possibly wants to ends his older brother Mana suffering by killing the Earl.

History[]

Nea and Mana

Nea (right) and his older twin brother Mana Walker (left).

Nea appeared alongside his twin brother Mana as a newborn.

After the Earl disappearance in front of Caterina Eve Campbell they appeared underneath Cornelia in the Campbell Residence. Caterina adopted the two babies and she named them Nea and Mana. They were raised as if they were her biological children within the Campbell Residence. Nea and Mana were raised together; they were close and lived a happy childhood.

Caterina would often sing a "melody" to both Nea and Mana when they were sleeping. This same "melody" is later sung by Mana and in the Noah's Ark Arc, Allen hears the same "melody" in his head.

When Nea turned 17 years old he attempted to stop the Millennium Earl and his Family to wipe out humanity. This was done in hopes in hopes of becoming the new patriarch of the Noah Family. At some unknown point the other Noah nicknamed him "The Fourteenth" out of spite. It was at this time the other Noah hunted Nea down and it left Nea with nowhere to hide or rest, living in constant fear. He also locked the location of the Ark above Edo which made it impossible for the other Noah to change its location although it remained otherwise functional.

At some point Nea requested Cross Marian to watch over Mana while hiding from the other Noah. He did this to ensure that his brother would be safe as well as that he would definitely reincarnate on his death and Nea promised that he would definitely return from the dead. Before his death Bookman Jr. promised Nea that he would protect his memory.

Bookman Jr. also taught Nea the Helix of Life and the nature of the Earl's power. Eventually Nea succeeded in killing all of the Noah except for Road and the Earl. Nea ends up eventually confronting the Earl and through uncertain events, The Earl ends up laying unconscious on Road's arms while Nea stands over them both. The Earl manages to however kill Nea and holds his body in his arms, all the while Bookman watches in secret. This mentally breaks Mana and causes him to become unstable. The Earl eventually takes Nea sword for his own.

Over the years Cross Marian searches for Nea reincarnated host. The Earl who is actually Mana ends up devouring Nea so as to become complete again. The conflicts in persona cause the Earl to become mentally unstable, and he chooses to destroy his face so as to forget that he is both Mana and Nea.

20 years later Nea reincarnates within the body of Allen Walker. Although Nea never properly appears in the series, only appearing once in Allen's dream as a shadow figure after Allen's Innocence was destroyed by Tyki and was left on the verge of death. Nea appears again in the Noah Ark Arc as The Shadow of the Player this time however he speaks to Allen giving him few hints before moving Allen's hands to play the piano. Nea makes his proper Noah appearance inside of Allen mind much later in the Artifical Exorcists Arc, where he introduces himself to Allen.

Abilities and Powers[]

Natural abilities as a Noah: As a Noah, Nea is naturally gifted with abilities that only humans with the Noah gene within their bodies active are able to possess, including a natural command of Akuma, immunity to the Akuma blood virus, and the power to use Dark Matter.

Acting Skills: Nea acting skills is extraordinary being able to perfectly emulate Allen's behavior with only few clues about his past from Timcanpy. He can imitate his personality perfectly to the point that Link has stated he would be able to fool everyone and would have fooled him too if not for his Ki sensing abilities.

Immense Combat Prowess Abilities: Although Nea abilities are largely unknown for now, he was able to successfully kill eleven Noah all whom has superhuman abilities on their own rights and unique abilities is by no means no easy feat to achieve. However him being the half of the Earl makes sense as it gives him enormous power.

The Pianist: Nea is one of the three members of the family able to control the Noah's Ark and have absolute authority over it, The other two being Road and the Earl. Nea can pass his abilities to use the Ark to others these powers referred to as being his "Will" as seen with Allen; while he is inside his body he was able to move Allen fingers to play the piano and control the Ark.

Swordsmanship: It is shown that in one of the flashbacks when the older Allen made a deal with Nea 35 years ago he had the same sword as the Millennium Earl the one he uses today. It is possible when the Earl killed Nea he took his sword for his own.

As the host of Allen, he can activate his Innocence at will without becoming a Fallen One.

Trivia[]

  • Both Nea and his older twin brother Mana have gold eyes even in their human form, something every Noah lacks as they only have gold eyes in their Noah form.
  • Nea has many collaborators who are either working in the shadows or in the open such as an unnamed old man who supports Nea. Even the Earl states he "wishes to be by the fourteenth side". As well as recent chapters show that Howard Link now fully protects Nea instead of viewing him as an enemy. It is also implied that Road was close to Nea prior to his death and knew many things about him. Most notably Nea most trusted ally is Bookman Jr. whom he viewed as a friend.
  • In all of the 7000 years the original Millennium Earl vanished only once, he then split himself into two (if not more) separate beings for unknown reasons, the two halves were both Mana and Nea.
  • According to Nea, he appeared in front of a dying Allen and asked him his name and if he would agree to make a contract with him in exchange for helping realize Allen unknown wish. Allen decided to trust Nea and agreed to become his host, which also saved Allen's life.
  • The Noah memory can't forgive Nea and they have deep hatred for him as seen in the case of both Tyki and Wisely as even the mention of him causes their inner Noah to surface and become unstable.
  • During his childhood days Nea was actually pretty cheerful and a good person before he turned evil.
