Neil Hargrove is a minor antagonist in Stranger Things.
Neil is the abusive father of Billy Hargrove and the main reason why the latter is xenophobic and arrogant abuser towards his step-sister, Max and her friends for no clear reason at all.
He is portrayed by Will Chase.
Personality[]
Neil is Billy Hargrove's abusive, domineering and xenophobic father; who hates anyone; who is not caucasian, masculine or heterosexual, even calling his own son, Billy slurs as insults and displaying extremely sexist behavior towards his wife and other women, calling his wife a "whore" and a "bitch".
Neil even got physical towards her, coldly insulting Billy's would-be date; completely disregard the fact that; he doesn't know anything about her at all while ordering him to cancel his date and not letting Susan express her opinion on his abuse of Billy, as he rudely interrupted her mid-sentence.
It was because of Neil's nature and; by repeatedly beating Billy that; the young adult adopted a violent and aggressive personality. It is also; because of this that; in the past, Neil divorced Billy's mother and then proceeded to marry Susan. But after Billy's death at Starcourt Mall, Neil started having fights; with Susan and eventually divorced her, and abandoned her and Max, showing to no end the extent of his selfishness.
Biography[]
Neil conceived Billy nearly two decades before the start of the show. He accused his wife of being unfaithful and used it to justify abusing her; until they ultimately divorced. Billy was subsequently seen riding the waves; until Neil shows up and scolds Billy several times. Returning home; with Susan, they find that Max is not there and questions Billy; who does not care, wanting to go out with a girl. He screams as Max doesn't need a babysitter anymore and has had to watch her all week.
Neil then grabs Billy, hangs him on the wall and hits him; before making him apologize to Susan. The latter says it's okay; but Neil says it's not and orders Billy to cancel his date and go looking for Max. The teen does so, saying "yes, sir". After which both parents leave the room. Billy is left alone and is seen crying.
Thanks to subsequently seeing flashbacks of Neil's unfounded monstrosity, Eleven reasons Billy; who becomes conscious again and protects her from the Mind Flayer and confront him; by sacrificing himself.
Sometime after the incident and Billy's death, Neil left Max and Susan. Reportedly, he could not stand his son not being around anymore. Max and her mother began doing slightly better ever; since he left.
