~ Nemesis' iconic quote and the only word he says in both the original game and the remake. |
Nemesis T-Type, also simply called Nemesis and nicknamed the Pursuer, is a major antagonist of the Resident Evil franchise.
Nemesis is one of the two (the other being T-A.L.O.S.) greatest of not only the Tyrants, but all bio-weapons created by the Umbrella Corporation, being far smarter, stronger and able to take orders. While the Nemesis T-Type was a series of bio-weapons, only one was shown to have been active, that being Nemesis-T02, whose purpose was to seek out and kill the remaining members of S.T.A.R.S.
He was voiced by the late Tony Rosato in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Under The Skin, Gregg Berger in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Damon Dayoub in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and David Cockman in the remake for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
Personality[]
Like other tyrants, Nemesis lacks true soul or emotions. His purpose is to hunt down and kill S.T.A.R.S members as he only speaks "S.T.A.R.S!" which is the only word he says. He, however, is shown to be very intelligent. With him actually being more intelligent than other tyrants and bioweapons. He is rather persistent to his goals with virtually nothing short of death will be able to stop it.
Biography[]
Creation[]
Nemesis was developed by Paris Labs of Umbrella's European Branch as one of the Nemesis T-Types, an offshoot of the Tyrant Project. The idea behind them was to create a B.O.W. that still had the power of a Tyrant, but more intelligent and able to follow orders. While the North American branch created T-A.L.O.S., a Tyrant cyborg controlled by the Red Queen computer, The European branch developed the NE-T virus, a new virus created by the NE-α parasite. When placed in a compatible host, the parasite hijacked the body and brain function. This in turn caused a violent mutation within the Tyrant Subject, which ended up disfiguring them. As a side effect, the parasite allowed the host to retain their intelligence and the secretions from the parasite would further enhance the regenerative abilities of the Tyrant host. He Stands 8 feet tall and Weighs Atleast 600lbs.
Raccoon City Outbreak[]
As the outbreak of the T-Virus in Raccoon City raged, Umbrella saw a chance to get rid of the S.T.A.R.S. team, who had been a thorn in Umbrella's side since the Arklay mountain incident. In the resulting chaos, Nemesis was deployed to take out the surviving members of S.T.A.R.S. Nemesis was even shown photos of the S.T.A.R.S members so it could recognize them as his primary targets before being helicoptered into the city.
Nemesis managed to hunt down Brad Vickers, finally cornering and killing him with a tentacle that impaled the pilot through the head out of the B.O.W.s hand in front of the Raccoon City Police Department while Jill Valentine watched in horror. Nemesis then set its sights on killing Jill, leading to numerous confrontations between them with the S.T.A.R.S. member barely escaping each time.
After she escaped it at the police station, Nemesis tracked Jill to a street trolley that she and her new U.B.C.S. allies, Carlos Olivera and Mikhail Victor, were trying to use to get to an evac helicopter. Launching an attack on the train, Nemesis broke into one of the cars where Mikhail tried to hold it off but proved unsuccessful and finally sacrificed himself by blowing up the car, though this had little effect on the B.O.W.
Nemesis tracked Jill to St. Michael's Clock Tower where it used a rocket launcher to shoot down the helicopter coming to her rescue and then confronted her in the tower courtyard. Before Jill could even fight back, Nemesis used its hand tentacle to infect Jill with the T-Virus. Despite this, Jill succeeded in using a combination of heavy firepower and explosives to defeat the B.O.W. again. This resulted in most of Nemesis' coat being burned off, revealing numerous tentacles writhing on his body.
The B.O.W. later reconvened its attack after Carlos returned to Jill with a vaccine for her infection. Nemesis smashed through a brick wall, now brandishing a host of tentacles on its arm, and went straight for the S.T.A.R.S. member. Having taken the vaccine, Jill managed to lose Nemesis in Raccoon Park, only to encounter him at the bridge of the Dead Factory, a disguised Umbrella disposal facility for B.O.W.s, failed or unwanted experiments, and organic wastes.
Jill managed to temporarily evade Nemesis by leaping into the river below them and continued into the facility. But she couldn't run from the B.O.W. forever and the two faced off once again in the waste disposal area. This time Jill doused Nemesis in the facility's organic decomposition chemicals, which burned and maimed it badly and left its body to be dumped in the factory dissolving pool.
With her hunter gone, Jill continued into the facility, finally reaching the power plant and junkyard and found traces of a recent fight between U.S. Special Forces and B.O.W.s with a railgun installed in the center of the room.
However, Nemesis reappeared, now little more than a torso, and absorbed the organic matter of a dead T-103 Tyrant, undergoing a final mutation into a monstrous tentacled abomination. Jill managed to damage the creature with the railgun, seemingly killing it, but as she was walking away, Nemesis stirred once more. However, it couldn't regenerate this time, leaving Jill to either take up a discarded magnum and pump all six rounds into the abomination's brain, finally ending the seemingly unstoppable Nemesis or leave him wounded on the ground and escape leaving the mutated Nemesis as Raccoon city is destroyed in which its presumably destroyed for good.
In the remake, Nemesis’s story and mutation progress changes slightly and more graphic; its second form is much more quadrupedal and the fight at St. Michael's Clock Tower saw one of its arm turned into a long tentacle after being severed by Jill. Its final form is more of a giant slug whose front half opened up to reveal proportionally huge, monstrous version of its previous form's upper half along with web-like tendrils which anchor its body to its surroundings — the expected result of consuming a pile of corpses rather than a chunk of dead Tyrant. The creature met its end after Jill shoves the railgun into its mouth and fires at point-blank range, effectively pulverizing it into a pile of partially charred biomass. While it's uncertain whether the creature survive such lethal blow, Nemesis' fate had since sealed with the bombing of Raccoon City.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Superhuman Strength: Nemesis possesses superhuman strength. He possesses the strength to leap to great heights and smash through anything. Nemesis is even able to use one hand to carry and utilize large heavy grade weaponry which even rigorously strong human beings cannot carry.
- Superhuman Speed: Despite his large and bulky physique, Nemesis is capable of outrunning any human being. Nemesis prefers to rapidly sprint towards his opponents like a charging rhino and bludgeon them to death with his superhuman strength.
- Superhuman Durability: Nemesis is extremely durable. This factor has made it one of the most resilient B.O.W. ever created, with handheld weapons only slowing it down, heavy weapons only momentarily incapacitating it, and only the largest grade industrial weapons showing any signs of truly damaging it. Nemesis has shown surviving a rocket launcher blast from Carlos Oliveira, a tank truck explosion, and Mikhail Victor's suicide attack.
- Tentacle Generation: Even before his secondary mutation, he can generate a long tentacle from the palm of his hands. These tentacles are useful to grab onto to distant targets and pull them closer. In Remake, Nemesis can climb with his tentacles. Nemesis' tentacles are infection when he implanted T-Virus portion into Jill after he impaled her at her left arm.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite the fact that the Tyrant host already possess regenerative abilities due to their t-virus enhanced metabolism, the parasite within Nemesis has further boosted his regenerative abilities through its excretions. Even though, these regenerative abilities are still much inferior to the G-Virus' regenerative properties, they are still superior to any Tyrant's regenerative healing even more than the T-00.
- Regenerative Mutations: When Nemesis receives too much damage to properly regenerate from, and his power limiter coat is destroyed, his regenerative abilities begin mutating him so as to develop adaptions in response to the physical traumas. These mutations later on afforded him natural weapons consist of numerous spear like tentacles that can tear through any human. By his third form, he had mutated too much and lost most, if not all, of his regenerative prowess and humanoid vestige, but developed the power to spit out acid.
- Skilled Combatant: Nemesis is an experienced fighter and close range combatant. He is also capable of utilizing specialized weaponry. Nemesis has demonstrated the ability to use weapons, namely a modified FIM-92 Stinger rocket launcher as well as a large modified flamethrower.
- Near-Human Intelligence: He has a high degree of intelligence when compared to other tyrants thanks to the parasite assimilated into his brain. Nemesis possesses human-like memory, since he is able to identify S.T.A.R.S. members from the photos he was shown by his superiors. He is even capable of some degree of rationalizing and deductive thinking. This was shown when it shot down Jill's rescue helicopter since he realized she would escape through it. Compared to its Tyrant brethren, Nemesis is capable of limited amount of speech, though all it ever says is "S.T.A.R.S.".
Weaknesses[]
- Uncontrolled Mutations: Nemesis' weakness is the special parasite that makes it superior, the NE-T Parasite, since its mutagenic qualities weakened its combat effectiveness as its mutations continued. The mutations also made it forget its programmed commands and instead resort to the Tyrant-like behavior of destroying everything around it. In its final mutated form, it lost all vestiges of human intellect but gained even more resistance to damage and could spit a powerful venom over long distances.
- Interestingly, Nemesis's mutations are much different from the standard Tyrant secondary mutations. This is most likely due to the presence of the Nemesis Parasite inside his body, since the T-Virus is more likely to enhance the existing parasites in a host body rather than the host themselves.
- This is further seen when Nemesis develops tentacle extensions around his body rather than generate increased muscle mass, dermal armor or large claws. This was due to the parasite inside his body that was undergoing regenerative mutations and growing in size and power.
In Other Media[]
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City[]
Nemesis (under the name Nemesis T-02) makes an appearance in the non-canon hypothetical scenario game of the Resident Evil franchise titled Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.
Though his role essentially similar within Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, there's a noticeable change on this character: First of all, he depicted standing roughly 9 feet tall. While he has all powers of his counterpart Nemesis T-Type includes capabilities in using a huge rocket launcher, this incarnation also uses the forearm-mounted minigun as one of his arsenals.
Other changes include this Nemesis' attack pattern where he prefers to fight at a distance: He would depend on the usage of his mini gun and rocket launcher and had he not equipped with any of the weapons or all of his said weapons are run out of ammo, he would use his tentacles as the last resort weapon that also used in distance.
At one point in his deployment, Nemesis T-02 was spiraling out of control, forced Umbrella to sent a USS team to knock out the Tyrant and inject it with a new parasite removed from a Nemesis candidate in the B.O.W. testing facility so it remained focus on its original mission.
Marvel vs. Capcom[]
Nemesis makes an appearance as a playable character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. He originally appeared Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as a cameo in Hulk's ending.
After Nemesis defeated Galactus, Oswell E. Spencer, and the Professor took Nemesis to greatly enhance his strength. They surgically encase Nemesis' skeleton with adamantium and even gave him Wolverine's Claws.
Project X Zone[]
Nemesis makes an appearance as a non-playable boss character in the crossover videogame Project X Zone. In the second game, Nemesis is later re-programmed correctly to destroy BSAA members and their allies.
Crosspedia Entry[]
Following the rampage of the Tyrant during the Mansion Incident, the pharmaceutical company Umbrella made improvements to their mass-produced Tyrant, eventually creating this new B.O.W. specifically intended to destroy S.T.A.R.S. Created by infecting a Tyrant with the "Nemesis" parasite, the previously mindless creature became capable of thought and reasoning, as well as the ability to use weapons, such as a rocket launcher. It is also capable of limited speech. In contrast to its bulky appearance, the Nemesis-T Type can move extremely fast, often choosing to simply close in and bludgeon its target.
Dead by Daylight[]
Nemesis returns in Dead by Daylight as one of the game's Killers in a Resident Evil-themed chapter set in Racoon City. His power "T-Virus" allows him to strike at the survivors with the tentacle in his left arm, infecting them and mutating him to make his tentacle strike stronger. In contrast to every other killer in the game, Nemesis is aided by two AI-controlled zombies that randomly wander around the map, attacking any survivor they come across. Even if the survivors stay out of their reach, Nemesis can see the outlines of zombies chasing someone through the walls, which notifies an attentive player to their location.
This Nemesis shares the same history as the Nemesis counterpart from Resident Evil 3 remake and after countless encounters with Jill, it and her were transport from Raccoon City sometime before he attacked the train and he evades his fate of dying and instead becomes a servant of the entity to finally fulfil his purpose of killing Jill and in which depending on your playthroughs she manages to escape him yet again or he finally manages to kill her accomplishing its purpose.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse[]
Nemesis, also known as Matt Addison, is a major character in the Resident Evil film series, portrayed by Eric Mabius as Matt Adison & Matthew G. Taylor as Nemesis. The character's design was left relatively unchanged, brandishing a rocket launcher and similar attire, but with the addition of a forearm-mounted rail gun, modeled after a heavily modified minigun. Although in the first movie he is still simply Addison, the Nemesis character later emerges as the secondary antagonist turned anti-hero in Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
Matt and Janus are captured by Umbrella just outside the hive entrance Matt began experiencing mutations to his left arm caused by the injury he sustained from the Advanced Licker which scratched him. Dr Sam Isaacs an umbrella researcher notices Matt's mutations and orders he be placed in the Nemesis Program. During the first stage of Mutation Matt's cells began to breakdown, whilst the T-virus fused with Matt's DNA his body began to mutate at an incredible rate. This caused his body to experience extreme increases of growth in height, muscle span and bone structure. Because of this Matt's entire body became extremely disfigured and unrecognizable. The researchers cut away most of Matt's face either to make the Nemesis look more menacing or simply because it was unnecessary to keep parts of its anatomy which were not needed.
During the mutation process Matt was alive and was still capable of independent thought despite the effects that the T-virus had on his body. Once the last stages of mutation were completed Dr. Isaacs and his researchers injected Matt with the NE a parasite which takes control of the Hosts brain and prevents it from thinking for itself. This was to ensure that the Nemesis would follow orders and perform specific tasks programed into its brain by Umbrella; the parasite was injected it took over Matt's brain preventing him from having any independent thought or awareness. Once this was complete the Umbrella researchers needed to surgically install an inhibitor that would allow them to give the Nemesis specific tasks as well as monitor its activities.
It would also act as a fail-safe if the Nemesis became uncontrollable. In order to do this they had to open up Matt's skull and place the inhibitor inside his brain, this is why he has surgical staples holding his scalp together. Now that the Nemesis program was complete the researchers decided to cover its body with a protective coat resembling leather and most likely containing kevlar to protect its body from high caliber weapons, explosions and extreme amounts of heat. Nemesis was also programmed to use two specific weapons that were custom designed for him, an M134 Mini-gun and a custom built rocket launcher. Due to the size of Nemesis it is easily capable of breaking a fully grown man in two without even putting half its strength into it for this reason it was also programed to use physical attacks to eliminate targets.
As the Nemesis, Matt was programmed by Umbrella to target and kill the surviving S.T.A.R.S. and combat "Project Alice". He presumably could not remember his life prior to the mutation until he squared off against Janus in a fight orchestrated by Cain. After being impaled by the jagged piece of metal by Janus, his actions afterward imply that he remembered her from the Hive incident. Before the nuclear strike on Raccoon City, he helps Janus, Jill Valentine and the others fight against the Umbrella commandos. Nemesis was killed during the battle when a helicopter he shot down crash-landed onto him. His remains were destroyed along with the Raccoon City by the nuclear strike.
In the novelization of the film, he is only incapacitated under the weight of the helicopter. He doesn't actually die until the nuclear strike occurs. The novel also suggests that the Nemesis functioned like another form of consciousness in Matt's body, one that had more control over himself than he did. However, he regained control of the dominant personality in the end and helped Janus.
Trivia[]
- Nemesis is named after the Greek goddess of vengeance and retribution whose name becomes another word for "enemy".
- Nemesis, particularly his first form, was modeled from the chatterer from Hellraiser.
- Nemesis' rocket launcher is specifically designed for it; it is larger and wider than a normal one, so much so that no human can carry it. Unlike a regular FIM-92 Stinger, the missiles do not take up the entire launcher and can be fired one after another.
- Nemesis' design was a rejected concept for T-00 from Resident Evil 2.
- In the movie, Nemesis was confirmed once human before being mutated to a large monster and modified via surgery as its videogame incarnation was created from a host of T-Virus which species is ambiguous (though implied to be human due to Nemesis' own humanoid appearance). Also, it appeared that this Nemesis' powers to use tentacles were replaced with mini guns instead.
- In the demo for the remake of Resident Evil 2, there's an easter egg of Nemesis yelling "S.T.A.R.S!" outside of the R.P.D.
- Unlike other incarnations, where Nemesis says "S.T.A.R.S" very quietly, in the Umbrella Chronicles, it outright screams it very loudly, which makes it sound enraged.
