“ | The stars can be plucked from the sky so easily, so why are you so desperate to reach them? It’s not even remotely logical, but humans are creatures filled with that sort of passion, aren’t they? That movement of your hearts is the one thing I’m honestly jealous of. | „ |
~ Nephthys. |
Nephthys is a major character in A Certain Magical Index: New Testament.
Based on the deity from Egyptian mythology of the same name, Nephthys is a Magic God and a member of the True Gremlin, who dwells in a territory beyond a certain layer of the world.
She was voiced by Yukana Nogami, who also voices C.C/C2 from the Code Geass series.
Appearance[]
Nephthys appears as a beautiful, dark-skinned woman with long silver hair and heterochromatic eyes which are blue and orange. She can apparently change the color of her eyes on a whim. She also has green teardrop and diamond marks under her eyes. Nepthys wears multiple white bandages that are wrapped around her body and is shown have nothing underneath them. She also wears a pair of white heals. Several of the bandages have pyramid-shaped decorations attached at the ends.
Personality[]
Like most Magic Gods, Nephthys is rather eccentric and amoral. She is extremely arrogant and is quick to judge other, willing to interfere with the normal world and looks down on humanity. She also looks down on Othinus for being weaker than her, despite her being a magic god herself.
While Nephthys often turns a blind eye towards the actions of her fellow Magic Gods, she was willing to aid Touma Kamijou and Mikoto Misaka against the High Priest when he went berserk and tried to destroy Academy City. Moreover, though she looks down on humans, Nephthys is also amazed by their passions and dreams that allows them to do achieve feats like space travel. She even claims to quite jealous of mankind's indomitable spirit and determination.
In addition to this, Nephthys empathizes with humanity the most out of all the other magic gods and tends to be very sentimental due to her origins and type of divinity. She once rescued an innocent girl from becoming a ritual sacrifice as part of a magic experiment. She was even willing to sacrifice her own existence to save Patricia Birdway out of a simple desire to "do something godlike" before dissappearing.
Biography[]
Nephthys's origins and full background isn't known. She was the goddess said in Egyptian mythology to have shed large tears upon the death of Osiris, but strangely enough, no other stories were known about her. For that reason, some speculated her divinity had been built up by human hands based on the “crying woman” hired to attend funerals.
Nephthys was created through the combined efforts of hundreds, if not thousands, of slaves buried alive with their pharaoh putting together every small piece of magic knowledge they knew and had access to in the pyramid.
At some point in time, Nephthys encountered a magical faction that was about to conduct an experiment that invloved sacrificing a young girl in order to prove the existence of Heaven. Eventually, Nephthys destroyed the entire magical faction by letting out a shrill cry that reduced them all into ash.
Nephthys would later become aquainted with her fellow magic gods and establish Gremlin.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Omni-Magic: As a Magic God, Nephthys has near-unlimited magical power, being powerful enough to risk destroying the world with her mere presence alone unless precautionary measures are taken. All possibilities are open to her, to the point that even omnipotence paradoxes can apply to her.
- Phase Manipulation: Nephthys is able to manipulate the phases of reality, granting her near total control over existence. With this, she can change natural laws, distort reality on a cosmic scale, perform incredible miracles, and instantly destroy and recreate the universe at will. She is also able to manipulate causality, and control dimensions, space, time, matter, energy and all other contents of the world as she desires. As she can control the world in these way, Nephthys should be able to wrestle around the control of the things she cannot manipulate.
- Water Manipulation: As the goddess who cleanses impurities, Nephthys has the ability to control water, being able to drain every speck of moisture from her surroundings (probably including living beings) to form a giant water blade.
- Crying Magic: Nephthys is able to emit a shrill cry which can selectively cause matter to vibrate intensely and turn to ash. She can also use her tears to manipulate the emotions of other people (including other Magic Gods), be it through tears of joy, anger, sorrow, awe, etc. by causing a psychological change. However, her tears then need to be seen by the target to affect them.
- Tears of Transmission: Nephthys can use her tears to boost whatever magic she targets. For example, she boosted Qliphah Puzzle 545's magic, sending it wildly out of control and consequently causing it to send Accelerator's power out of control.
Mummy Body: Due to her secondary organs being separate from her main body, Nephthys is capable of making use of them to escape if something happens to her main body, such as being 'exiled' by World Rejecter, with part of her consciousness split off, though having more than 99% of her body exiled away still took away almost all of her remaining strength, and her escape merely delayed her death.
- Sand Mimicry: As her body is a collection of the dust that mummies become as they vanish into the flow of time, Nephthys is capable of turning her body into a small sandstorm that can change at a microscopic level.
- Recovery: Since her body contains countless linked loops of life force, even if one part is severed, the pathway can be rerouted to preserve the overall circulation. Nephthys can thus regenerate from damage such has losing a limb, having her heart or brain destroyed and having a chunk of her torso destroyed; as the split parts can join together and recover from the damage. The 1% of her existence that escaped being exiled by World Rejecter managed to recreate her entire body from some secondary organs.
- Partial Power: Due to her divinity originating from the crying woman from funerals - in particular the thousands of servants buried alive in a pyramid for a pharaoh's burial, Nephthys differs from other Magic Gods in that while others thoroughly honed their powers as an individual, she specializes her power as something which can be separated, split apart, cut away and swapped out. Because of this, even after being weakened by Aleister's spell, Nephthys is still capable of destroying the world and shifting the phases once.
Anti-Vector Redirection: Through unknown means, Nephthys was able to force her way through Accelerator's reflection, suffering damage but still managing to kick and tackle him.
