The Nerds are major antagonists in the 2006 video game Bully.

They are the clique of intelligent but weakling students at Bullworth Academy, who are trying to prove themselves to the other cliques to not be bullied. While not too villainous as much as the other characters, they serve as the arch-rivals of the Jocks clique and committed some actions throughout the storyline against them and Jimmy himself.

Biography[]

Overview[]

All members of the Nerd clique adhere to the school uniform standard in kelly green, representing the colors of the Astronomy Club. Boys typically opt for either vests or sweaters paired with school slacks, with the exception of Algie, who prefers jeans or jorts depending on the season. Beatrice deviates from the norm by wearing a dress and white blouse. Sporting glasses and displaying poor posture, they tend to fall on either end of the weight spectrum, being either overweight or underweight. Similar to the Jocks' hats, their glasses can be dislodged if they receive a few punches. Engaged in the hobby of playing Grottos and Gremlins, they demonstrate limited prowess in combat but excel in crafting various weapons scattered across campus.

The Nerds conform to the stereotypical image of intellectual outcasts, often congregating at the Library or Dragon's Wing Comics bookstore, though they can also be spotted around campus. While they claim the Observatory as a hideout, they seldom frequent it, possibly due to its proximity to the Football Field. Renowned as the most academically inclined clique, they are diligent attendees of classes, yet many admit to skipping Gym class and advocate for the removal of non-academic subjects.

Despite their intelligence, the Nerds rank as the weakest clique in the school, facing relentless harassment from both the Jocks and Bullies. Their rivalry with the Jocks runs deep, while encounters with the Preppies and Greasers, though less severe, still contribute to their torment. Occasionally, they target Non-Clique Students and will confront the Jocks or Bullies if they encroach upon their territory near the library.

In a departure from the typical clique dynamic, the Nerds, led by Earnest, do not adhere to the pattern of the leader dating the lone female member, as Earnest shows no romantic interest in Beatrice. However, Beatrice harbors feelings for Jimmy early in the school year, with Bucky being the only Nerd to display romantic intentions towards her, though she seemingly considers him a friend.

Despite their physical ineptitude in combat, the Nerds compensate by utilizing various weapons akin to those wielded by Jimmy, including the bottle rocket launcher, spud gun, firecrackers, and stink bombs. Their deceptive tactics have earned them descriptions such as "sneaky bastards" and warnings that they are "not as harmless as they look," as noted by Gary Smith.

Story[]

The Nerds serve as Jimmy Hopkins' initial allies, extending their friendship to him early on. They often enlist his help either for protection against the Bullies or to recover items or members of their clique. Throughout Jimmy's rise to dominance in the school, the Nerds remain steadfast allies, relying on his support. However, their leader, Earnest, swayed by Gary's influence, betrays Jimmy, turning the clique against him.

Despite this setback, Jimmy swiftly overcomes Earnest's betrayal, defeating him and reestablishing his alliance with the Nerds. Together, they join forces once more in Jimmy's campaign against the Jocks. However, Jimmy's control over the Nerds wavers temporarily, only to be regained through his victory over Earnest in a second confrontation.

In essence, the Nerds' loyalty to Jimmy fluctuates but ultimately remains intact, solidified through their shared victories and struggles against common adversaries.
