Biography[]

Novel[]

Nessarose is the younger sister of Elphaba. Nessarose was born with pink skin and without arms, requiring a wheelchair to move. She was raised in Quadling Country in the southern part of Oz, where she attended Shiz University along with Elphaba and Galinda Upland (later Glinda the Good Witch). After Ama Clutch's death, she is called into Madame Morrible's office and offered the chance to become a witch. She eventually became friends with Galinda but pushed people away with her fanatical religous convictions. When Elphaba went missing and was presumed to be dead, she became the new ruler of Munchkinland and a witch. Galinda (now known as Glinda) used her magic to cast a spell on Nessarose's silver shoes which allowed her to walk without a wheelchair.

Nessarose ruled Munchkinland with an iron fist and used her magic cruelly on her subjects even enchanting the axe of a Munchkin named Nick Chopper to slowly cut off every one of his body parts which were later replaced by tin, making him the Tin Woodman. She also forced the munchkins to perform human sacrifice to the Unnamed God. When Elphaba visits her, she offers her a the oppurtunity to rule Munchkinland with her, though Elphaba refuses. She also promises to leave her silver shoes to Elphaba when she dies. Due to her cruel treatment over the Munchkins and her black magic, she earned the title, "The Wicked Witch of the East". Nessarose was killed when a cyclone carrying the house of Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto landed on her. Glinda then gave Nessarose's shoes to Dorothy which angered Elphaba and forever ended their friendship.
