Nessarose Thropp, also known as the Wicked Witch of the East, is a supporting antagonist of the 2003 musical Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, a stage adaptation of the the 1995 fantasy novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. She is the musical's version of the Wicked Witch of the East and the younger sister of Elphaba Thropp.

In the first production of the show, she was portrayed by Michelle Federer. In the film, she is portrayed by Marissa Bode.

Biography[]

Nessarose was born to Frexspar, the govenor of Munchkinland, and Melena Thropp. When Melena was pregnant, Frexspar made her chew milk flowers to avoid Nessarose being born with green skin like her first born daughter, Elphaba. This made Nessarose be born paraplegic, unable to walk. Frexspar spoiled Nessarose and favored her over Elphaba.

As young adults, Nessarose and Elphaba went to Shiz University together. On her first day of Shiz, Nessarose was gifted jeweled shoes by Frexspar. Madame Morrible, a witch and the headmistress of Shiz, decides for Nessarose to share a room with her since she is handicapped and the favorite daughter of Frexspar. Angry, Elphaba telekenetically brings Nessarose's wheelchair back to her when Morrible tries to wheel Nessarose away. Morrible decides that Elphaba's magic may be used to help the Wizard of Oz and that she will teach Elphaba sorcery.

Boq, a munchkin who is in love with Galinda Upland, an aristorcrat and Elphaba's roomate, asks her to be her date for a party hosted by Winkie prince, Fiyero Tiggelar. To get Boq to leave her alone, Galinda tells him to ask Nessarose to the party. He does and this makes Nessarose develop feelings for him. Boq tries to tell Nessarose at the party why he asked her to the party but doesn't due to not wanting to offend her.

When Elphaba is framed by Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz and gets the title of the Wicked Witch of the West, Frexspar dies of emabrassment and Nessarose becomes the new govenor of Munchkinland and Boq becomes her servant. In order to keep Boq with her forever, she keeps the munchkins from leaving Munchkinland and takes away the little rights that they had. When Elphaba visits her for help, Nessarose refuses to help. Elphaba then casts a spell on Nessarose's jeweled shoes which turn them red and give her the ability to walk. Nessarose calls over Boq to show him and he tells her that he wants to leave to tell Glinda that he loves her. Angry and hurt, Nessarose takes the Grimmerie, Elphaba's spellbook, and attempts to cast a love spell on Boq. However, since Nessarose was not born with magic, she mispronounces the spell and causes Boq's heart to shrink. Nessarose gains the title of the Wicked Witch of the East. Elphaba saves him by turning him into tin. When Boq discovers that he is now made of tin, he is horrifed and runs out of the mansion while Nessarose blames Elphbaba.

When Glinda finds out that Fiyero loves Elphaba instead of her, she tells Madame Morrible to spread a rumor that Nessarose is in danger. Morrible then conjures a tornado which brings a house carrying a girl named Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto to Oz. The house lands in Munchkinland and crushes Nessarose to death.

Trivia[]

  • In the original novel, Nessa was born without arms, implied to be the result of her mother consuming milk flowers to prevent her from being born with green skin as Elphaba had been. This version of the character is instead a paraplegic, unable to walk and using a wheelchair.
