The New York Terrorist Cell (so named for wikis) are the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds Season 3 finale “Lo-Fi” and Season 4 premiere “Mayhem”. The cell are an alliance of political terrorists out to create panic from numerous murders, building up to deadly political attacks.
Biography[]
Little is know about the cell, not even their origins or motives. The cells sent agents to troll the streets of New York City to fire upon random pedestrians, all using the same gun, to create the illusion of a serial killer as the cell was buying time for their ultimate plan. Agent Kate Joyner was enlisted to assist the police, but the BAU were called in addition as the shootings escalated. The team originally assumes just two killers, until yet another shooter doesn’t match the characteristics of the other shootings, which reveals a criminal alliance.
Law enforcement is on full alert now identifying the killers are terrorists. One of the shooters is tracked, but he commits suicide by cop. The team stays in separate hotels with patrol SUVs stationed outside each one. Joyner and Agent Aaron Hotcher approach one, which explodes by the trigger of one of the terrorists, Sam, who poses as a random citizen and feigns concern. Police and EMTs don’t approach, as profiles implied a mildly second bomb to target them too. Emergency response is delayed for Joyner, and Hotchner, Agent Dayak Morgan, and even Sam himself move Joyner. When Sam is identified as the bomber, Morgan chases him, and Sam kills himself by electrocution on the train tracks.
The last terrorist, Ben Abner, commandeers an ambulance and uses it to get the agents to a hospital, where a politician is being treated and Secret Services agents have closed the premises. Joyner’s let into the hospital, and the agents finally realize Abner is the terrorist and the plan is to blow up a bomb in the ambulance to kill the politician. Morgan rides off with the bomb and escapes the ambulance when Abner, furious, detonates the explosives in what’s an unpopulated area. He them gets into a shootout, killing several Secret Service agents, only to get shot in suicide by cop. Little else is revealed about the terrorist cell, and the status of the rest of the members is left unknown.
