~ Capetti talking back to the police interrogating him. |
Nicholas "Nick" Capetti is the secondary antagonist of the Law & Order episode "Bitter Fruit". He is a petty criminal who kidnaps a 12-year-old girl on orders from his boss and the girl's mother, only to accidentally kill her.
He was portrayed by John Ventimiglia.
Early life[]
Capetti is a career petty criminal, having served short prison sentences for burglary, attempted rape, and assault. His one redeeming quality was his love for his elderly mother, whom he began supporting financially after getting a job as a glazier.
Shortly before the events of the episode, Capetti's boss, Frank Sullivan, pays him to kidnap 12-year-old Jodie Gaines as part of her mother Karen's plan to punish her ex-husband for taking custody away from her. He succeeds in kidnapping Jodie and getting her into his work van, but he panics when she starts screaming and hits her over the head with a bottle, killing her. He wraps her body in a draper's cloth and drives to his mother's house for dinner; after the sun sets, he drives to a nearby junkyard and disposes of the body.
"Bitter Fruit"[]
After Jodie's body is found, NYPD Homicide Detectives Lennie Briscoe and Rey Curtis investigate and trace the glass found in her scalp and hands to Sullivan's glass company. Sullivan directs them to Capetti, who says that he was in the area, but that he got a speeding ticket while driving away. He then explains the circuitous route he drove after the job by saying that he went to his mother's house for dinner, before refusing to answer any further questions. Mrs. Capetti is likewise evasive when the detectives question her, refusing to say anything beyond confirming that he was in her house that evening.
Suspicious of Capetti, Briscoe and Curtis get a search warrant for his work van, where they find shards of the same glass found on Jodie's body and pieces of the same cloth she was wrapped in. They arrest and interrogate him, threatening him with the death penalty unless he confesses. Capetti remains defiant, however, refusing to admit to anything and demanding to speak to a lawyer.
Executive Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy and Assistant District Attorney Claire Kincaid charge Capetti with felony murder. During his arraignment, however, Karen shoots him twice in the back, killing him. She is hailed in the press as a hero and McCoy and Kincaid arrange for her to serve a lenient sentence, but they eventually discover that she and Sullivan hired Capetti to kidnap Jodie, ultimately convicting them both of first-degree manslaughter.
