Ave Dominus Nox!
~ Night Lord warcry.

The Night Lords are major antagonists in Warhammer 40k and are one of the most notorious of the Chaos Legions. Originally serving as the VIIIth Legion in the Imperium of Man, they were lead by their Primarch Konrad Curze and specialized in horrific terror tactics, ending wars before they ever began. While their tactics were full of unimaginable, reprehensible atrocities, in a twisted sense, this in the grand scheme of things was potentially preferable to the alternative. The Night Lords' extreme violence would often shock their enemies to their core, forcing an immediate surrender without the need of a full Astartes invasion, thus fully preserving the planet and its people without further conflict. However, with Curze's increasing descent into madness, and the Legion's ultimate fall to evil during the Horus Heresy, what good was left in the Legion faded and those within who once harbored a sense of justice no matter how twisted were lost, leaving behind only monstrous, sadistic souls who only wish to spread their evil across the cosmos.

Despite this, their remains a small handful of the original Night Lords who continue to brutally hunt and punish evildoers, who look down upon their later generation brethren with contempt.

Attributes[]

The Night Lords specialize in shock tactics that cross far beyond the insane and into pure wickedness. Just one of the many catastrophically cruel ways they would wage war would be to kidnap thousands from the planet the Imperium sent them to, and then brutally torture and murder them while broadcasting this barbaric nightmare to the rest of the planet. While this would bring a swift end to the conflict and ultimately leave the planet and its civilizations untouched compared to annihilation from war with the Astartes, most other Space Marine Legions would ever engage in such cruelty and for this the Night Lords were frequently looked down upon. With their Primarch's twisted sense of justice, Curze sought to deliver the most brutal punishment possible for evildoers, and in a sense succeeded at this, as he and his Legion's methods were so extreme none would dare further provoke their wrath, but Curze was rapidly going deeper into insanity. After his death, and the Legion's recruitment from some of the worst pools of humanity imaginable, and later the Heresy, what was left of the Night Lords was now almost entirely composed of insane villains, continuing the severe atrocities and war crimes of their predecessors but this time simply for their own sadistic enjoyment.
