Nightmare Klonoa is a minor antagonist in the now-cancelled webcomic, Klonoa: Dream Traveler of Noctis Sol. He is a dark doppelgänger of Klonoa from a colorless nightmare world who torments Lolo while posing as the real Klonoa.
Appearance[]
Nightmare Klonoa bears much of a resemblance to the real Klonoa, though with a number of differences. Nightmare Klonoa has a grayscale color palette, with more yellowish grays in the fur on his face and ears, as well as on his gloves. He also has a more-spiked look throughout his design, with his ears being more pointy at the ends, and the fur on the sides of his faces having much sharper edges. This is also shown in his attire, which consists of a pair of cleats with metal spikes, a pair of gloves covering his sharp claws, and a collar around his neck similar to Klonoa's own collar, but with the iron buttons replaced with metallic spikes. Dark Klonoa also wears a pair of shorts with thick layers of fur at the end of the leggings, along with a hat with a Pac-Man emblem similar to Klonoa's own, but with a smaller Pac-Man being chased by a larger ghost.
Personality[]
Unlike the real Klonoa, Nightmare Klonoa is a sadistic bully who captures Lolo and poses mentally torments her by telling her that nobody cares about her while posing as the actual Klonoa, and eagerly tries to kill Klonoa when he comes to intervene. Nightmare Klonoa is also implied to be wrathful, as he's shown to be mad when he first notices Klonoa trying to stop him, before sadistically trying to kill him. This is also shown by how Nightmare Klonoa agrees to join Tenebrae Hue in order to get his revenge on Klonoa and the others for leaving him behind.
Biography[]
After Klonoa, Huepow, and Popka enter a dream stream to escape from a possessed Chipple, they find themselves in a strange, colorless dream world. After the three defeat a trio of Moos attacking them, Klonoa hears someone crying from far away, and asks Popka to fly through the trees to see where the sound is coming from. Popka does so and notices a fort way ahead surrounded by Moos. Klonoa decides to neutralize the Moos in front by using his Wind Ring to inflate them while Popka pushes them away. Klonoa then hears the crying sound again coming from behind the doors guarded by two Shield Moos, which Klonoa and Popka easily run past.
After Klonoa uses his Wind Ring to force the doors open, he and Popka are shocked to find Lolo trapped in a bubble by Nightmare Klonoa, who psychologically torments her by posing as the real Klonoa while mocking her and claiming that nobody cares about her. Nightmare Klonoa is then surprised to notice the real Klonoa confronting him from behind and telling him to stay away from Lolo. Nightmare Klonoa responds with confusion, believing the real Klonoa shouldn't be here, before sadistically trying to kill him. Meanwhile, Popka comes to Lolo to comfort her, only for her to continue sobbing, believing Nightmare Klonoa's words about her to be true. In response, Popka tells her to look in front of her to see the real Klonoa fighting to save her, causing her to stop sobbing as she realizes Klonoa does care about her. Klonoa then uses his Wind Ring to inflate Nightmare Klonoa and temporarily immobilize him, before using the Wind Ring to shatter the bubble around Lolo, freeing her from her imprisonment.
After asking Lolo how she got to the strange world, Klonoa tells her that the world they're in isn't real, but a bad dream caused by her emotions running wild, and that he and the others came to save her from the nightmare world, claiming she needs to wake up from it. Lolo then falls asleep, causing the nightmare world to start collapsing as Klonoa holds her in his arms with Huepow and Popka close by, before the three suddenly teleport away together. Nightmare Klonoa is then seen deflating back to normal and landing on a floating piece of the destroyed nightmare realm, angered that he was left behind. Suddenly, he hears Tenebrae Hue calling to him, asking him if he wants to get his revenge and telling him that he can arrange it for him, which Nightmare Klonoa shows interest in.
After returning to Lunatea and talking to the High Priestess, Klonoa and the others suddenly hear a flash of lightening from outside, after which Klonoa and Lolo come outside to investigate. The two then see Tenebrae Hue, who has gathered the energy of Noctis Sol, and uses it to summon Nightmare Klonoa to attack the heroes along with the brainwashed Guntz and Chipple in the final panel of the comic.
Trivia[]
- Nightmare Klonoa is never mentioned by name in the webcomic. His name was only discovered after being confirmed by Jim Zub on Twitter in response to a fan.
- Nightmare Klonoa shares a similar premise to a scrapped pink and green doppelgänger of Klonoa from a piece of concept art for Klonoa: Door to Phantomile drawn by Taro Hasegawa. Much like Nightmare Klonoa, the scrapped character was an evil version of Klonoa whose hat had an emblem of Pac-Man being chased by a ghost.
- According to Jim Sub, this was unintentional on his part, though he also stated that Hitoshi Ariga might have been channeling it.
