The Demon of the Nihility, also known as Nighty, is the redeemed antagonist of the award-winning indie adventure game Bear's Restaurant, created by Odencat, and appears again in the sequel Fishing Paradiso.
Appearance[]
Nighty takes the form of a small black entity with spikes on the top. He has a single large eye and occasionally has a mouth which appears to be red.
Personality[]
Nighty personality was dependent on whether or not he consumed the despair of souls in the afterlife.
When fed with despair, he became a malevolent monster. Obsessed with having more despair to feed on, he would grow angered when denied this. He appeared sadistic, as he enjoyed torturing his victims upon devouring them, condemning them while laughing maniacally at their suffering.
Without despair, Nighty's true personality would surface. In reality, he was a far more good-natured being and did not like the monster he became whenever he ate despair. The reason he ate it was that it was his only source of food whenever he was hungry. Nighty was much like a child; he enjoyed playing games and desired to have a friend in the Nihility. In truth, he only wished to be free from his lonely realm. He was also noble, as he was willing to sacrifice himself to save the Bear and the Cat from the Nihility.
History[]
Background[]
Nighty is a demonic entity that once resided in the Nihility, a place in the afterlife where irredeemable souls are sent to fade into non-existence, rather than being given the chance to reincarnate in Hell. Nighty was the one entity that resided in the Nihility and was destined to remain there for all eternity. He would feed on the despair of the souls sent to the Nihility which made him grow stronger but also had a negative effect on his personality, causing him to become very dangerous.
Bear's Restaurant[]
At one point, Nighty had escaped the Nihility and ended up in the Bear's Restaurant. He demanded to be given despair, but was denied since they did not serve this. Enraged, Nighty went on a rampage, kidnapping several souls bound for Heaven, including the Bear and his daughter, the Cat, devouring them. Trapped inside Nighty, the Bear was forced to listen to the demon gleefully condemning him. Fortunately, the Bear managed to save his daughter, and together with the other kidnapped souls, they defeated Nighty using the power of hope.
However, Nighty survived the event, but was left weakened and remained hidden in the restaurant. He was eventually found by the Cat, before being forcibly taken back to the Nihility, accidentally taking the Cat with him. During their time in the Nihility, the Cat became friends with Nighty, who revealed that he had decided to quit eating despair due to its negative effects on him and the things he had done because of it. Unfortunately, any soul in the Nihility would eventually fade away into nothingness, including the Cat. Nighty was left distraught as this started to happen, but fortunately, the Bear arrived, having traveled to the Nihility to save his daughter. Before she could fade away completely, the Bear managed to once again save his daughter with the help of Nighty, who sacrificed himself so the two could escape.
Nighty was remembered as a friend by the Cat and he eventually returned, finally free from the Nihility permanently and came to reside in Heaven.
