Nigredo is a supporting character in the light novel series Overlord. She is one of the three NPCs created by Tabula Smaragdina and is the older sister of Albedo and Rubedo.
As an Area Guardian, she occupied the Frozen Prison on the 5th Floor of Nazarick and watched over the top ground, having been imprisoned by Ainz Ooal Gown. She would eventually be released to assist Yuri Alpha in opening and leading an orphanage in E-Rantel.
She is voiced by Kikuko Inoue in the Japanese version of the anime and by and by Trina Nishimura in the English version.
Appearance[]
Nigredo was designed around Tabula's fascination for Japanese horror films and was given an appearance to reflect that. As such, her appearance is much like Albedo's, only that her skin is a very pale, white color and her hair is unkempt, with long strands of it reaching to the floor. She also lacks Albedo's horns and wears a black frilled dress that's been torn up.
Her most distinguishing feature, however, is her face as it lacks any skin and instead reveals all of her muscle tissues and blue veins. Her eyes and teeth stand out heavily, which are described to be one of her beautiful aspects.
Personality[]
In spite of her appearance, Nigredo has shown to be one of the lesser evil citizens of Nazarick and is generally a friendly being under certain circumstances. This is due to how Tabula created her, in which he wanted her to contrast with her appearance, much like Albedo. Under normal circumstances, Nigredo will attack those that trespass her area, regardless of who they are, unless they offer her a baby-doll. This is because she was programmed to have a motherly affection towards infants and is thus very protective of them.
She dislikes seeing innocents being killed and is willing to go against Ainz's orders for the sake of having them being spared. However, her compassion only extends towards infants under the ages of 2. Once they have reached past that age, she sees them as nothing more than "sacks of meat to dispose of", ultimately showing she has no issue with killing them or seeing them be murdered.
Despite initially going against his orders, she swears her loyalty to Ainz like all the other NPCs, as he is the only remaining Supreme Being of Nazarick. Her loyalty to Tabula comes first and foremost, however.

- Her appearance suggests she may possibly have been based on Sadako Yamamura, which is supported by Tabula's interests in Japanese horror films.
- Despite their similar appearances and being sisters, Nigredo does not appear to be the same species as Albedo, as she lacks the horns and wings of a succubus.
- Nigredo originally appeared in the story during the Bloody Valkyrie Arc, but her scene was omitted from the anime during Season 1. She did not make an appearance in the anime until Season 4.
- In the light novel, Nigredo's scissors are depicted to be normal size and she would wield them like knives. In the anime, her scissors have been greatly enlarged, requiring her to wield them with both of her hands.
- Like Albedo, Nigredo was not present in the original web novel story.
