Prepare for the best fight of your life, human

You shall know pain, human
~ Nikushimi (憎) to Haru Suzuki

Fear is a seed, and I, Sayuri, will see it bloom within you, turning you into one of us.

~ Nikushimi (憎) to Haru Suzuki

Hmmm, not bad, this is the first time in a thousand years I've ever been impressed with a mere mortal
~ Nikushimi (憎) to Haru Suzuki

Farewell, human, you've tried your best, I'll remember your efforts.
~ Nikushimi (憎) to Haru Suzuki after beating him.

Sayuri (早百合), also known by her nickname, Nikushimi (憎: Nikushimi; lit: Hatred) and "The Beast of Hatred" is one of the main antagonists of the discontinued 2022 Roblox horror game Haru, now Shadows of The Yokai.

She serves as the main antagonist of The Cursed Heritage, based on the history of The Suzuki Family.

She actually turns out to be the master of Yoshinobu, the one who "supposedly" attempts to help Haru Suzuki escape Yomi, with an ulterior motive.

Because she had helped Haru at the end she had gained the ability to rebirth when she was near death.

Backstory[]

Sayuri was once a revered healer in her village, known for her nurturing hands and ability to mend even the gravest wounds. However, when she attempted to save a loved one, she failed due to interference from envious villagers who sought her downfall. In her despair, she prayed to darker forces to grant her greater strength, swearing never to be powerless again.

Her wish was granted, but at a cost—her body twisted to reflect the burden of her newfound abilities. The three arms on her left symbolize the overwhelming weight of responsibility, the constant need to overreach and protect, while the single arm on her right is a reminder of the balance she lost and the simplicity of her former life.

With great power, comes great responsibility

Identity[]

Core Identity[]

Sayuri is a cunning, enigmatic figure with an aura of power and a commanding presence. Though feared and loathed by many, her intelligence and charisma make her impossible to dismiss. Her primary goal is to destroy the false ideals of perfection and greatness that Haru represents, as she sees them as destructive illusions. But beneath this mission lies a personal desire—to reclaim what she lost and assert her place in a world that wronged her. Sayuri fears irrelevance and being forgotten, as well as the possibility that her actions might ultimately mirror the very systems she despises. Her bitterness toward societal ideals of perfection, her desire to expose hypocrisy, and her ruthless pragmatism.

Conflicts[]

Internal Conflict[]

Sayuri believes in her cause—to tear down false idols and create a world where imperfection is celebrated. However, she grapples with the reality that her methods may cause unnecessary harm.

  • She asks herself: Am I any better than those I oppose?
  • Regret vs. Resolve:
    • Sayuri harbors guilt over sacrifices she made in her pursuit of power, including betraying those who once trusted her. This guilt fuels her resolve to ensure her actions aren’t in vain.
  • Identity Crisis:
    • Sayuri’s hatred for perfection stems from personal trauma—perhaps she once tried to embody that ideal and suffered for it. She wonders: Am I fighting for justice or revenge?

External Conflict[]

  • Sayuri views Haru as the embodiment of everything wrong with society—perceived perfection, blind admiration, and unearned privilege. Their dynamic is not just hero vs. villain; it's a clash of ideals.
  • Power Struggles:
    • Sayuri’s rise to power likely involved alliances and betrayals. These alliances are fragile, and she constantly faces threats from within her own ranks.
  • Legacy of Oppression:
    • Sayuri could be tied to a long lineage of people oppressed or cast aside by Haru’s family. This gives her a legitimate grievance but also fuels a vendetta that blinds her to potential allies.

Parallels[]

  • Haru as Her Opposite:
    • Haru’s extroversion and public adoration contrast with Sayuri’s solitude and infamy. Their shared struggles with identity and legacy create a tragic parallel.
    • Sayuri might even see parts of her younger self in Haru, intensifying her hatred for him.
  • Family or Former Ally: (NOT CONFIRMED)
    • Perhaps Sayuri was once connected to Haru’s family—a forgotten sibling, a scorned descendant, or a loyal ally betrayed. This personal connection would make her grudge more poignant.

Description[]

Gameplay Appearances[]

As the story unfolds through Haru's journey, more layers of Sayuri's past and motives are revealed, hinting at a deeper connection to the protagonist and a hidden backstory that shapes her malevolent intentions. While she appears to act independently with no apparent higher authority, the progression of the series suggests there may be unseen forces influencing her actions.

Her acquaintances, who are the other primary antagonists then arrive in the other chapters. They may make a cameo appearance in Shadows of The Yokai: Chronicles of Fear.

Physical Appearance[]

Human Form[]

In her human form, Sayuri appears deceptively ordinary, luring players into a false sense of security. She is of average height and build, with long, jet-black hair that cascades down her back in tangled, unkempt strands.

Nightmare Form[]

In nightmare mode, Sayuri's appearance takes on a truly horrifying and grotesque transformation. Her body becomes emaciated, her limbs elongating to unnatural proportions, giving her a spider-like, unsettling quality. Multiple jointed arms with razor-sharp, bone-white claws protrude from her sides, giving her a nightmarish arachnid appearance. Her skin is now mottled with gaping, bleeding wounds, and her eyes have multiplied, covering her entire face like a grotesque mask of malevolence. A trail of inky, ethereal shadow follows her as she moves, casting a terrifying silhouette.

Trivia[]

  • The Cursed Heritage will have four chapters (4/死 = shi = death) and maybe another chapter.
  • There is another character that is the complete opposite of Sayuri, their name is Ai (愛, meaning: love)
  • Sayuri was not born human, but there is a reason she carries a hatred against them: her planet exploded, forcing her and her people to flee to Earth and largely remain in a village. The humans destroyed that town in an attempt to capture it for themselves.
  • Sadly, Haru, never got an official release, even after being teased multiple times.
  • The amount of knowledge she beholds in not able to fit into one head, that's why all her monster forms have at least 2 heads.
    • In her model she doesn't have a head, though. (Due to lag)
  • Sayuri is nerfed in early chapters and can't use all the abilities she possesses.
    • However, in the later chapters she gains more access to her abilities.
  • She is probably the second best written character (Behind Haru Suzuki) and best written antagonist of Shadows of the Yokai.
  • Sayuri is over 3000 years old, having lived through countless ages and civilizations, which has shaped her current view on life, death, and power.
  • Despite her near-omniscient knowledge, Sayuri is often blinded by her own overconfidence, believing that she has all the answers to the universe, which eventually leads to her downfall.
  • Sayuri possesses absolute manipulation abilities, allowing her to control not only people but the very fabric of reality itself. However, this power can be turned against her if someone is clever enough to exploit her psychological vulnerabilities.
  • Her nigh-absolute regeneration and immortality make her nearly invincible, but they come at the cost of her eternal loneliness, as she watches everyone around her age and die, leaving her with nothing but herself.
  • Sayuri can tear open rifts in dimensions, allowing her to manipulate space and time. This ability is often used for escape or reality manipulation, but it also serves as a symbol of her desire to control everything around her.
  • Sayuri has the power to absorb energy, which she uses to amplify her abilities. However, this power can also become a double-edged sword, as it may lead to her becoming consumed by the very energies she takes in.
  • With the ability to summon spirits, Sayuri often raises the dead to serve her purposes. Her control over the dead reflects her obsession with maintaining control, even over things that should be beyond her reach.
  • One of her most powerful abilities is the ability to instill fear in others. She can manipulate people’s deepest fears to break their will, yet this same power also weighs on her, as she has become increasingly fearful of being forgotten and irrelevant.
  • Sayuri can extract memories from others, which she uses to manipulate and control. Her ability to erase or alter memories adds to her sense of isolation, as she no longer knows what it feels like to have genuine connections with others.
  • Sayuri is connected to many cursed artifacts from her past, which amplify her powers but also bind her to a never-ending cycle of torment and suffering. She collects these items as a way of clinging to her old life and the power she once held.
  • Her ability to summon chaotic creatures is a reflection of her chaotic nature. This power can be unpredictable, as the creatures she summons may have their own agendas, and she must constantly struggle to maintain control over them.
  • Through reality distortion, Sayuri can bend the laws of physics and time, creating illusory worlds. This ability plays into her desire to reshape reality to her will, but also highlights how unanchored she has become to the true world.
  • Despite her immense power, Sayuri’s greatest weakness is her emotional instability. The longer she lives, the more she struggles with regret, loneliness, and a sense of purposelessness. Her cynicism and despair are the true sources of her undoing.
  • Sayuri’s fate is tied to Haru, whom she sees as a representation of human hope and resilience. Over time, she comes to recognize his importance, realizing that her long-standing fight against humanity might have been futile, especially after seeing Haru’s own struggles and growth.
  • Sayuri has shapeshifted numerous times in her efforts to curse Haru Suzuki.
  • Sayuri was sealed but the reason is unknown, this is why she cannot use all her abilities once she escaped.
  • Eventually Sayuri changes her ways and becomes somewhat an ally/friend of Haru Suzuki.
