Nilo is a major antagonist in the 2012 brazilian telenovela Avenida Brasil. He is a waste collector, a child exploiter and a greedy man that starts many conflicts in the telenovela.
He was portrayed by José de Abreu.
Personality[]
Nilo was once a loving husband and a doting father that worked hard as a bank clerk. But once his wife Lucinda cheated on him, followed by his daughter Clarinha being murdered and his wife being imprisoned for her apparently having killed her murderer, Nilo became a drunkard and a extremely spiteful man.
He became an abusive parent, often starving or beating his son, Max and only sometimes giving him food, and food of the worst kind. Nilo exploits the children that he takes care of, demanding that they work for him, find him some money in exchange for food and sometimes demanding that they steal money for him, otherwise not giving them food at all and starving them to death or punishing them with beatings. Nilo is considerably spiteful, often throwing Lucinda's failures at her face just because she cheated at him at some point, sometimes trying to manipulate her adoptive children and at some point burning her house along with every child in it just because Lucinda hid his money. He makes a point in humiliating his son, Max every chance he gets, calling him useless and a shame to him as a son.
Nilo tends to take advantage of situations. Throughout the telenovela and the rivalry between the main protagonist Nina and Carminha, he generally helps only those that has continually helped him out in financial ways or by giving him food, and once they no longer helped him, he actively worked against them at some point or another. He holds a huge grudge towards Santiago because he was the one that cheated on him along with Lucinda, and knows his true nature as a psychopatic murderer. This eventually leads to his death at the hands of Santiago, who poisoned him because he knew the truth about his crimes.
Besides his negative traits, Nilo has some redeeming qualities. He genuinely loves Lucinda and sometimes tries to help her out of her miserable condition, only for her to refuse his help because of her huge self-loathing and lack of hope, and he respects her wishes. His love for Lucinda has him trying to "save" her from Santiago, that uses her for his own goals and on his final breath begs Nina to tell Lucinda that he loves her. He also has a sense of gratitude, never once betraying someone that has helped him and helping them afterwards of whatever bad thing that happened to them.
Nilo was redeemed on his death bed, informing Nina of Santiago's true nature and admitting his love for Lucinda.

Nilo appears as an elderly man with a long grey hair and a long messy white beard, he is somewhat chubby.
