Nimue is a major antagonist in ABC's Once Upon a Time. Nimue is the very first Dark One and the creator of the Darkness. In the fifth season, Nimue hatches a plan to snuff out the light in Storybrooke and joins forces with Captain Hook to achieve her goals. She is one of the two main antagonists of the first half in Season 5 (alongside The Darkness).
She was portrayed by Caroline Ford, who also portrayed by Lilith the Succubus.
Biography
Before First Curse
She was the true love of the sorcerer Merlin, with whom she went on a quest with one day to make a sword out of the Holy Grail, stripping him of his powers and allowing him to be mortal and be with his love. However, during an encounter with Vortigan, the man who destroyed her town looking for the Grail she is fatally stabbed by him. However, she recovers shortly after due to drinking from the Grail herself, and rips Vortigan's heart out, with the intention of killing him. Merlin warned her that doing so while having the power from the Grail would cause her to succumb to the Dark Curse, which she refuses to acknowledge. As such, she crushes Vortigan's heart and kills him. This allows the darkness from within Vortigan's heart to infect her, transforming Nimue into the very first "Dark One". The Promethean Flame is extinguished to an ember, and Nimue goes on to shatter Excalibur into two pieces, in order to prevent Merlin from ending the immortality of both of them. Then, Nimue apologizes to him for her actions, but Merlin says no, that he is the one who is sorry. As the First Dark One, she now wears Vortigan's mask and clothing as her own.
Merlin used one half of the snapped Excalibur to create the Dark One's Dagger, biding the soul of the Darkness' host to it and forcing whomever the unfortunate soul is to be enslaved by the bearer of the Dagger. Shortly after accomplishing this feat, Merlin intended to use the Dagger to kill Nimue, blaming the Darkness for killing the woman she loved (by this time, the audience is led to believe that Vortigan is meant to be the Dark One), but cannot bring himself to do it. Dropping the Dagger. Merlin is transformed into a tree by Nimue, who departs with the Dagger.
At some point, she constructs the Vault of the Dark One, which would allow the current Dark One to come back to life using the Darkness. It would later be used centuries later by Baelfire, son of the Dark One Rumplestiltskin, to bring back his father after he had perished. At another point, she tried to steal Merlin's most-treasured item, the Sorcerer's Hat (which had the power to cleave her soul from the Dagger and not be controlled by it), from his Apprentice, but is unable to take it.
She is apparently killed off by her successor and is sent to the Underworld for her evil. However, she is able to communicate from the Underworld through the mind of the current Dark One.
Before Third Curse
When Emma Swan, the new Dark One, summons her to extract the last flame ember of the first fire (the Fire of Prometheus, which was used to melt down the Holy Grail), she mocks Emma for being nothing without Darkness. Emma rips the ember needed to complete Excalibur from her in response saying that she was never nothing. Nimue reminds Emma that she'll still be waiting in Emma's mind, but she had still decided to choose good over evil. A while later, she persuades Captain Hook, who also became a Dark One after Emma used the sword to save his life, to sacrifice Merlin's heart to create a Dark Curse to return everyone to Storybrooke where Hook may have revenge on Rumplestiltskin. Being the third time that the dreaded Dark Curse is cast, everyone is returned to Storybrooke; however, Emma manages to remove everyone's memories of the past six weeks in Camelot so that no-one would know that Hook is the Dark One.
After Third Curse
In Storybrooke, Nimue and the past Rumple appear from Emma's mind along with all other Dark Ones and watch her complete Excalibur.
Hook is taken by Darkness Rumple to the pond which has a connection to the Underworld, and he sinks his hook under the surface. The hook, covered in the blood of a former Dark One (Gold, although still alive) allows all Dark Ones, Nimue included, to return to the world of the living. Nimue, wearing her mask, leads the group and walks on the water's surface towards Hook, graciously accepting his hand and removing her mask. She tells Hook they must do what all Dark Ones were meant to do - snuff out the light. Hook welcomes her to Storybrooke as the Dark Ones descend upon the town, bringing the full power of the living Darkness with them.
Nimue is the main antagonist of the Winter Finale, "Swan Song". She marks each of the heroes with the mark of Charon, sacrificing their lives for the Dark Ones'. She blasts the heroes and teleports them to the lake, where all Dark Ones are gathered. When Emma tries to stop her and Hook, she attacks Emma and easily incapacitates her. Hook snaps out of his evil, saying that this is enough. He turns on Nimue. She smirks, saying he can't defeat her, but he responds that he can before using Excalibur on her, causing her to disintegrate slowly and be sucked into the sword as part of the Darkness. Emma tearfully kills Hook with Excalibur, causing the whole situation to end and all the Dark Ones of the past to be sent back to the Underworld. The Mark of Charon disappears from all the heroes and Storybrooke is saved, but at the cost of Hook's life; this begins Emma's quest to the Underworld.
Powers and Abillities
- Magic - As the first and most powerful Dark One (aside from Rumplestiltskin after he gained all the Dark Ones power), Nimue is immesurably powerful sorceress, equal in power to Merlin himself and surpassing most other Dark Ones, even Emma Swan, who she easily overpowered.

- Nimue was also the main antagonist of the first season of the television series Merlin.
- In "Dreamcatcher", male actor Guy Fauchon is credited on the press release and in the episode credits as "Vortigan", whose face was covered by a mask in the episode. However, thanks to the flashbacks shown in the seventh episode of the fifth season, it was proven that the character billed as "Vortigan" in "Dreamcatcher" is supposed to be Nimue, a female character, disguised by a mask.
- Nimue is a Bigger Bad to the series, as she is the one who started the cycle of the Dark Ones, and the first to harness the power of the Darkness. On the converse side, Vortigan is this to her; had he not killed her family, she would've never become the Dark One in the first place, and thus the Dark One would have never existed.
- In the overall story of Season 5A, Nimue is the main antagonist. She is one of the five people taking up the role, including Emma Swan, who was the main antagonist of the first eight episodes, Captain Hook, the main antagonist for the final two episodes with Nimue, and King Arthur and Zelena, the main antagonists of the flashbacks portion. the Darkness serves as the Bigger Bad (being the source of her power).
- Nimue is the de facto Big Bad of Season 5A, since she was manipulating Hook the entire time, Emma was more of an anti-villain and Arthur and Zelena were only the main antagonists for the past storyline.
- Nimue is similar to Anakin Skywalker a.k.a Darth Vader because the individual whom used to have close relationship with them stated to the heroes that they were killed by villains, only to revealed that the so-called villains whom killed them turned out to be their own alter-ego as the said individual unable to tell the heroes that they actually turned to the dark side instead of killed (Obi-Wan Kenobi stated to Luke that Anakin was killed by Darth Vader only for Luke himself later learned that Anakin was never killed at all and Darth Vader was actually Anakin's alias as a Sith apprentice after he became evil. In Nimue's case, Merlin claims that Nimue was murdered by the first Dark One to Emma, only for Emma to later learn that Nimue actually turned to the dark side and became the first Dark One herself).
- Nimue is both a Bigger Bad and a Big Bad. She was a Bigger Bad for Rumple and the other Dark Ones during the first four seasons and a direct Big Bad in the fifth season.
- Nimue is somewhat similar to Gellert Grindelwald from the Harry Potter series; she was a villain from the past who the main hero's (Emma Swan, Harry Potter) mentor (Merlin, Albus Dumbledore) had once been in love with. The main difference is that Nimue loved Merlin in turn (though in a twisted way in the end), while Grindelwald's feelings for Dumbledore were never established. Another key difference is Grindelwald felt remorse in his later years, while Nimue was irredeemably evil until the end.
- Also, Grindelwald and Nimue had similar motives for seeking power: to protect the world in which they lived for the greater good, no matter the cost.
- She and Fiona are arguably the true main antagonists of the entire series, given that their actions are what led to most of the events. Nimue is the one who created the Darkness, leading to the creation of most of the other antagonists. Nimue's creation of the Darkness eventually led Rumple into being the Dark One, which led him to train Cora Mills, Regina Mills, and Zelena, which led Cora to train the Red Queen. It also leads to Emma Swan's turn as an antagonist. While Fiona is the one who created the Dark Curse and caused Rumple to go on his dark path.
- She was portrayed by Guy Fauchon in the episode Dreamcatcher, during the scenes when she was dressed as the Dark One.
- She also bears a similarity to Abeloth. Both were mortal women who fell in love with a powerful immortal (Merlin, the Father). Both desired to be immortal like their lover (and in Abeloth's case, family), not only because they would die while their loves lived on but also to protect something precious to them (for Nimue, the world; and for Abeloth, her family). Despite being warned by their lovers not to, both drank from a mystical water source (the Holy Grail, the Font of Power) which turned them into a dark villain and the archenemy of their former love. Both had the power to possess others; while Abeloth could possess people while she lived, after death Nimue's presence existed in many other dark sorcerers, such as Rumplestiltskin. Among the people they possessed was someone the main hero (Emma Swan, Luke Skywalker) loved (Killian Jones, Callista Ming), which forced the former to kill them in order to free them. The most obvious similarity is that both can only be killed by a mystical dagger (the Dark One dagger, the Mortis dagger).
- The fact that Emma Swan (a Savior) and Killian Jones (a Dark One) worked together to destroy her could make Nimue's seeming death similar to Abeloth's, since they were both killed by the forces of light and dark; Abeloth was destroyed by Sith and Jedi working together. Also, neither Nimue nor Abeloth were permanently destroyed; NImue still lives within Rumplestiltskin, and unless Luke were to recover the Mortis dagger, Abeloth can never be permanently destroyed.
