Nizat 'Kvarosee is a major antagonist in the Halo franchise serving as the main antagonist of Halo: Silent Storm, Halo: Oblivion and Halo: Outcasts.

Nizat was originally the leader of the Fleet of Inexorable Obedience and in this role, led the destruction of several human colonies early in the war. This pitted Nizat against the Master Chief and the Spartans in their efforts to keep the Covenant from wiping out the human race. In one of humanity's earliest victories, the Spartans and the elite Black Daggers were able to decimate Nizat's fleet.

Disgraced by his failure, Nizat went rogue and formed the Flotilla of Unsung Piety to redeem himself by destroying ONI which he had realized was the greatest threat to the Covenant. Nizat and his forces successfully sprung a trap, but suffered heavy casualties from both the human forces and a Covenant fleet sent to stop the rogue Fleet Master. As punishment, Nizat and his surviving ground forces were exiled on the inhospitable world of Netherop with an orbital mine shell being established by the Covenant to prevent any chance of him escaping. However, Nizat succeeded in planting a beacon on the humans and a few of his ships escaped to continue his plan.

Nizat resurfaced thirty-three years later when humanity and the Swords of Sanghelios returned to Netherop in search of a weapon to defeat Cortana and the Created. By this point, Nizat had adopted the title of Worldmaster and had become an irrational religious zealot who had taken control of the alien structure containing the weapon. Decades of war with the human survivors stranded on the planet and dissent from within had reduced Nizat's Defenders of the Sanctum to only a handful of warriors. Most of Nizat's forces were killed or defected and Nizat was abandoned on Netherop for a second time with only his faithful steward Tam 'Lakosee. Both badly injured and facing an imminent death from infection, starvation or dehydration, Tam chose to mercy kill his once mighty leader rather than letting him suffer.

Biography[]

Halo: Silent Storm[]

In 2526, Nizat is the leader of the Fleet of Inexorable Obedience and leads a genocidal campaign to wipe out human colonies. Two of his ships, the Unrelenting and the Radiant Arrow fall victim to the Spartans and Nizat faces increasing pressure from the obnoxious and incompetent San'Shyuum Minor Minister of Artifact Survey. Through First Blade Tel 'Szatulai, the United Rebel Front approaches Nizat to form an alliance to get rid of the UNSC, revealing that the Spartans had destroyed Nizat's ships and intended to ambush his fleet at Biko.

With the information from the URF, Nizat is successfully able to block the Spartans' boarding tactics and spends five days glassing the human colony. However, an attempt by 'Szatulai to capture a human Prowler on the moon of Seoba results in the loss of part of his own fleet and the humans capturing a Covenant star map. Shifting their tactics, the Spartans attack Nizat's supply fleet, bringing his attack to a halt as Nizat is forced to call for more supply ships. This allows them to identify the location of the Covenant world of Zhoist, forcing Nizat to divert his fleet to Zhoist to protect it.

During the following Battle of Zhoist, the Spartans and the elite Black Daggers are able to destroy two of the planet's Ten Cities of Edification and the Ring of Mighty Abundance despite suffering heavy casualties in part thanks to URF interference. In addition, 'Szatulai is killed by the Spartans while trying to eliminate them. Although Nizat's forces are able to capture some of the Black Daggers for interrogation, this proves to be disastrous due to the powerful explosives that they had hidden on them. When the explosives detonate, the Fleet of Inexorable Obedience is left decimated. Fed up with Survey, Nizat's loyal steward Tam 'Lakosee kills him and Nizat decides to lie to protect the young Sangheili.

Halo: Oblivion[]

Recalled to High Charity after his defeat, the disgraced Nizat petitions the San'Shyuum Hierarchs to focus their efforts on destroying ONI, convinced that they are the true threat. However, the Hierarchs attempt to have Nizat killed instead, and he escapes with his remaining loyal soldiers, forming the Flotilla of Unsung Piety and going rogue.

Determined to redeem himself, Nizat embarks upon an elaborate plot to get a Luminal Beacon into ONI's hands by luring the UNSC to Netherop using a supposedly disabled Covenant frigate. Nizat successfully lures the Spartans there and a corpse with the beacon planted on is captured. However, Nizat's rogue actions result in a Covenant fleet being sent after him, destroying his grounded frigate and much of the orbiting flotilla, although a few ships manage to escape. Rather than killing him, the Covenant punish Nizat by exiling him on Netherop with his surviving ground forces, stripping them of their armor and establishing an orbital mine shell in order to keep any of Nizat's surviving ships from rescuing him.

Despite his defeat, Nizat is left somewhat content as he is sure that the ships that escaped will continue his plans. Nizat and his men settle into exile with Nizat adopting the title of Worldmaster.

Halo: Outcasts[]

Thirty-three years later, the UNSC and Thel 'Vadam's Swords of Sanghelios return to Netherop in search of a weapon that can potentially be used to stop Cortana and the Created. There, they find Nizat still alive still alive and the leader of a group called the Defenders of the Sanctum. The Prophet of Truth had covered up Nizat's actions and the true nature of the events on Netherop, making it so that the Covenant World Registry made no mention of an orbital mine shell around Netherop, just the loss of the Radiant Arrow and the Steadfast Strike and that the Prophet of Truth had deemed the losses to be a sign of divine displeasure and forbade all Covenant vessels from entering the system. Nizat's exile on the planet was omitted with Thel only having heard of the events up to Nizat and his forces fleeing from High Charity and a general order from the Hierarchs that Nizat be killed on sight. The Silent Shadow also apparently left behind Blademaster Menuz 'Ra'ashai to help enforce the exile, although he ended up joining forces with Nizat during his years stranded on the planet.

Over the next thirty-three years, Nizat and his forces waged an ongoing war against Lieutenant Commander Amalea Petrov and her forces who were also stranded on the planet, unaware that the Covenant was eventually defeated. The exiled Covenant forces would discover leftover Precursor technology that allowed them to create armor that they called Sanctum's Hide and a weapon that they called the Divine Hand which Nizat used to destroy two UNSC rescue missions that were sent to the planet. However, Petrov and her forces were able to kill a number of Nizat's people over the years, leaving him with only six remaining followers, while the humans had children and their numbers only increased as time went on. Nizat became more and more fanatical as time went on, but his followers, aside from Tam, started to become disillusioned by their harsh life.

Despite Thel's efforts to reason with Nizat, he proves to be too fanatical to be convinced to stand down. Most of his remaining soldiers are killed by Spartan Olympia Vale and Sangheili Oath Warden Crei 'Ayomuu, leaving only Nizat and Tam who are badly injured in the fighting and Menuz who surrenders in exchange for being allowed to leave with Thel's forces. However, when Thel uses the Divine Hand to destroy a Banished fleet, Tam uses the chance to destroy Thel's fleet and the human ship in orbit as well. Unwilling to risk taking Nizat and Tam with them, the UNSC and Swords of Sanghelios abandon them on the planet when they escape in ten surviving UNSC Condors.

Without the power source of the Divine Hand, the Sanctum loses power with the food and drink that had been grown for the Defenders of the Sanctum becoming contaminated and withered. Facing death from infection, starvation or dehydration, Tam chooses to mercy kill Nizat with his energy sword rather than allow his friend to suffer a prolonged end like Tam is left alone to face.

Personality and traits[]

Nizat 'Kvarosee was considered an honorable and competent commander, proud of his station and skill, with 160 Earth years of military experience under his belt as of 2526. He was loyal to his crew and those who served him, and willingly took responsibility for any mistake he made, imagined or not. This willingness to take responsibility earned him a high degree of respect from First Blade Tel 'Szatulai who excused some of Nizat's impudent actions towards him as a result. Though he considered humans to be weak and cowardly, Nizat educated himself to learn English and a handful of other human languages, and he had ordered the Vicars of the Fleet to do the same. Nizat considered the glassing of human colonies to be cruel, though admittedly found it glorious and beautiful. He believed that the annihilation of humans was his gift to the gods, a mere tithe he offered to one day be deemed worthy for the Great Journey.

However, Nizat had a hint of dissent growing within and found no delight from inflicting suffering and death on defenseless humans. He regarded the San'Shyuum as repulsively weak, though he was careful to address them with a tone just shy of reverence. He had a particular dislike for the Minor Minister of Artifact Survey, who he considered unimpressive and annoying. Despite this, he refused to lie to a San'Shyuum. On several occasions, Nizat found himself imagining killing the Minor Minister. At one point, Nizat contemplated whether or not 'Szatulai would follow the order if he gave it which 'Szatulai's own internal musings showed he gladly would've and wondered in turn if Nizat and his crew would be willing to cover it up. He found that his path grew darker after his steward Tam 'Lakosee slew the Minor Minister and the fleetmaster quickly decided to lie to the Hierarchs about the manner of Survey's death to save the life of his steward.

Nizat showed himself to be an incredibly cunning and adaptable opponent, proving himself to be one of humanity's earliest and most dangerous Covenant enemies. This was only amplified by the fact that humanity remained unaware of the true extent of the danger that Nizat posed to them. During Operation: SILENT STORM, Nizat's tactics were highly adaptable to countering the Spartans and the UNSC after learning from the Insurrectionists of their plans. After learning what had been taken from a downed intrusion corvette in the Battle of Seoba, Nizat and 'Szatulai quickly deduced the UNSC's next target and moved to stop them. It was only the Spartans own adaptability to the situation that allowed them to bypass Nizat's defenses and decimate his forces at Zhoist. Nizat subsequently came up with an elaborate plot to destroy ONI, recognizing it as the true danger amongst the UNSC even when the Hierarchs refused to listen. Using what he'd observed of the Spartans tactics during his previous engagements with them, Nizat successfully lured them into a trap on Netherop using one of his own ships as a lure and then using the Spartans to combat the Silent Shadow when they arrived. Although ultimately defeated and exiled on Netherop by the Covenant, Nizat succeeded in slipping a Luminal Beacon into the UNSC's possession and remained confident that his forces would be able to continue with his plan, even in Nizat's permanent absence. Arbiter Thel 'Vadam, after meeting Nizat, recalled that the Fleetmaster had a reputation amongst the Covenant for being a competent, if not cunning, strategist, although Nizat's reputation had been ruined after his defeat in Operation: SILENT STORM.

Already a strong believer in the Covenant religion, Nizat became more and more fanatical as time went on during his exile on Netherop, but his followers, aside from Tam, started to become disillusioned by their harsh life, although none were willing to outright go against him. Although some would occasionally attempt to abandon Nizat and disappear into the mountains, Lieutenant Commander Amalea Petrov and her forces would kill them rather than running the risk of Nizat's deserting warriors becoming a danger to them later on. During their first meeting, Thel's impression was that Nizat was somewhat unbalanced and more than a little sanctimonious. After hearing the story of how Nizat had saved Tam when he had killed the Minor Minister of Artifact Survey, Thel had a hard time reconciling the merciful superior from Tam's story with the irrational zealot that Nizat had become.

Trivia[]

  • The outcome of Nizat's plan from Halo: Oblivion is unknown as is the fate of the rest of the Flotilla of Unsung Piety as neither are mentioned again even when Nizat returns in Halo: Outcasts. However, Nizat's plan was presumably unsuccessful as ONI was still in existence 33 years later.
