Nolan Stross is the tritagonist in the 2011 video game Dead Space 2 and one of the four main protagonists of its animated prequel film Dead Space: Aftermath.
Once a senior scientist for the USG O'Bannon, Stross would fall into madness after coming into contact with a fragment of the Aegis VII's red marker. Surviving the ship's outbreak, Nolan was taken to the Sprawl to become a test subject of EarthGov's project to create a marker from his and Isaac Clarke's minds. During the outbreak on Titan Station, Stross attempted to help Clarke destroy the site twelve marker but would become an enemy due to succumbing to the marker's madness.
He was voiced and modeled by Curt Cornelius.
Biography[]
Background[]
Nolan Stross was born in the twenty-fifth century in an unknown year to unnamed parents, and later become a scientist for the Concordance Extraction Corporation. During his adulthood, Stross met a woman named Alexis, whom he later married and had their son around the 2500s. Around this time, Stross was placed on the USG O'Bannon as the crew's senior scientist. Though he cared for his family, Nolan began an affair with the O'Bannon's chief medical officer Isabel Cho, which resulted in his marriage crumbling.
Dead Space: Aftermath[]
The crew of the USG O'Bannon are tasked by EarthGov to retrieve pieces of the 3A marker (also known as the red marker) from the remains of Aegis VII, and to find a way to keep the planet together. During the mission, the scientist came across a remaining marker fragment and started to experiment on the piece on the ship. Becoming more obsessed with it, Stross' mental state crumbled during his experiment, resulting in him unintentionally starting an outbreak on the O'Bannon. When Necromorphs started to attack and slaughter the crew, Stross fled to his quarters where he encountered his wife and son. Due to the marker's influence, Stross saw them as Necromorphs, and proceeded to brutally kill his wife and son.
Following the incident, he was found by Cho, who brought him with the survivors that managed to evade the Necromorphs. Realizing that the fragment needed be destroyed, Stross informed the others on how to end the outbreak. Reaching the ship's core, Stross found himself unable to throw the fragment, leading to Cho to do so. After ending the outbreak, the survivors were captured and brought to the Lead Interrogator on the USM Abraxis on what happened on the O'Bannon.
The Sprawl[]
After his interrogation, Stross was sent to the Titan Station on the Sprawl due to coming into contact with a fragment of the red marker. Alongside the CEC engineer Isaac Clarke and others, Stross was a test subject of Project Telemere where EarthGov studied marker patterns and signals. During the three years, Nolan would have sessions with Dr. Foster Edgars, whom would be in command of their experiences with a machine made to form markers. The subjects were then used to create the Site 12 Marker, and Stross and Clarke were placed in cryo statis to keep them alive.
Dead Space 2[]
When the outbreak on the Sprawl occurred, Stross was freed from his stasis and attempted to contact Clarke to tell him of the steps. During the resulting chaos of the outbreak, Nolan continued to contact Clarke despite the latter being warned by Daina Le Guin to stay away from him. Following his failure to escape, Clarke was contacted again by Stross, who explained that they could destroy the marker since they build it. Encountering another survivor named Ellie Langford, Stross accompanied her while she protected him from the Necromorphs in the area.
While heading to the government sector, Stross' mental state continued to deteriorate, becoming hostile towards Ellie and Clarke during their journey. Afraid to face his wife and son from the hallucinations, Stross believed that he could make both Ellie and Isaac go through the steps so they could enter the machine. He then attacked Ellie before gouging her eye out with a screwdriver to commence step three, and later left her to find Clarke. Confronting his former ally, Stross spoke of the steps before being attacked by Ellie in retaliation for taking her eye. At some point during the scuffle, Nolan managed to escape and confronted Isaac, attempting to kill him but was disarmed and stabbed in the head with his own screwdriver.
