Irani Rael, also known as Nova Prime, is the main antagonist of What If... Nebula joined the Nova Corps?, the first episode of Season 2 of the TV Series, What If...? She is a variant of Nova Prime from an alternate universe where Ronan nearly destroyed Xandar, forcing her to place a shield around the planet. However, after years of isolation, she gave up trying to protect the planet and joined forces with Ronan.
Irani Rael was the leader of the Nova Corps like her Sacred Timeline counterpart was. However, her history diverged from her counterpart when she recruited Nebula into the Nova Corps after she was left dead by Ronan the Accuser. Years later, Ronan returned to destroy Xandar, causing the Nova Corps to place a shield around the planet, isolating it.
Five years later, Irani realized that Xandar was doomed, so she agreed to let Ronan destroy it in exchange for him allowing her to keep her position of power. However, she needed the source codes for the shield generator, which were hidden in Xandar's Data Core. Since the Data Core couldn't be accessed without a cyborg, she had Nebula go on a mission that would lead her to the it, which she started by having her Nova Corps soldiers murder Yondu Udonta. Her plan succeeded, and, after revealing her plans to Nebula, she ordered the Nova Corps to kill her.
Irani tried to open the shield for Ronan, but she found that the codes had been altered by Nebula, causing the shield to open for a short while, then close and crush Ronan's ship. Irani tried to flee in a ship, but her escape plan was stopped by Nebula, and the ship crashed into the side of a building, causing Irani to fall out and hang precariously over a ledge. Nebula tried to help Irani up and offered her a chance to return to the side of good, but Irani, refusing to change, tried to shoot Nebula, which caused her to lose grip on the ledge and fall off the building.
Trivia[]
Irani Rael serves as a dark parallel of Nebula. While Nebula was a villain who joined the side of good, Irani was a hero who was corrupted by evil.
This is referenced in her defeat. The episode uses light as a metaphor for redemption, and Nova Irani's defeat has her falling of a building into darkness.
