“ | Hmph… Freakish old man. You should have watched. You might have learned something. I will capture the princess, and I will replace you at our master’s side. You will stew in regret, and I will enjoy every moment. | „ |
~ Novala expressing his dislike for Riev and revealing his ulterior motives. |
“ | This is WAR! There are no rules here! In war, you can do anything! Anything! You curs of Renais have lost! Your idiotic ravings mean nothing… | „ |
~ Novala to Princess Eirika and General Seth |
Novala (Japanese: ノベラ, Novela) is a minor antagonist in the 2004 Game Boy Advance title Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones serving as the main antagonist and boss character of the game’s sixth chapter where he is tasked to deprive Princess Eirika of Renais from her bracelet.
He is one of Grado General Riev’s subordinates. Although he seems loyal, Novala actually holds a grudge against his superior Riev and envies him for his position as their master’s right-hand man. This master in question could refer to the Demon King, the main antagonist of the game making Novala therefore like Riev a follower and worshipper of the Demon King. Although the "master" could also refer to Vigarde the Emperor of Grado and Novala could be completely unaware of Riev's connection to the Demon King and the latter’s involvement in Grado’s war against the other kingdoms. Whether Novala is actually a follower of the Demon King can therefore not be said for certain, since this is not clearly stated in the game.
Biography[]
Novala appears exclusively in the sixth chapter of the game, where he is seen discussing with his superior General Riev the ambush that he has prepared for Princess Eirika. As Riev is about to leave, Novala asks him if he wouldn't like to witness him capture the princess. Riev, however, declines Novala's invitation, telling him that he has important tasks to fulfill for their master while describing the capture of the princess as a trivial matter to be left to servants like Novala, and then sets off for Grado's capital. Offended by this statement, Novala vows to capture the princess and thereby take Riev's place as the master’s right-hand man, revealing his self-serving and ulterior motives to the player.
When Eirika and her army arrive on the Adlas Plains, they are suddenly ambushed by Novala, who demands the princess's bracelet. At first she refuses, but after Novala threatens to kill one of his hostages, a little girl from Renais, Eirika agrees to hand over her bracelet to save the child’s live. He then demands that she and her companions surrender their weapons, but Eirika and her knight Seth refuse to comply as doing so would leave them entire defensless. In response to this, Novala decides to feed the girl, as well as her parents, to the great spiders that inhabit the mountains of the plains. Eirika then tries to recover her bracelet and save the hostages from the spiders (the latter of these task is optional). Despite his efforts, Novala fails to best Eirika and her troops and falls in battle.
