Mary Attinger, better known as Nurse Mary, is a minor antagonist in season one of Dexter and its prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, as well as the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter upon which the show's first season is based. An "angel of death"-type serial killer, she is a nurse who kills her patients with overdoses of morphine, and the young Dexter Morgan's first murder victim.
In Dexter, she was portrayed by Denise Crosby, while in Original Sin she was portrayed by Tanya Clarke.
Nurse Mary is first seen in the episode "Popping Cherry", in which Dexter Morgan's adoptive father, Harry Morgan, tells him that she has been poisoning him by giving him too much morphine, and has killed several other patients in the hospital. When she comes into Harry's room to administer the drug, Dexter stops her, saying that Harry does not want the medication. For a moment, Mary's "mask of sanity" slips, and she fixes Dexter with a classic "sociopath stare", and while she instantly recovers her cheery façade, Dexter has seen her for what she is. Harry then gives Dexter "permission" to commit his first murder by killing Mary.
Dexter breaks into Mary's home, where he sets up plastic all over her living room and arranges pictures of her victims in what would later become his signature as a serial killer. When Mary gets home from work, Dexter ambushes her and manages to knock her out with a punch to the face after failing to sedate her with a needle.
When Mary wakes up, she is tied to a table, and Dexter reading her scrapbook containing obituaries of all her victims. He removes the cotton from her mouth after telling her that if she screams, he will cut her tongue out. Terrified, Mary tries to justify her actions by saying she is helping her victims by taking away their pain. Dexter tells her that he is going to take away her pain, and awkwardly stabs her three times in the stomach, killing her. Dexter dismembers her body and dumps her remains in the Everglades.

Nurse Mary is the first person Dexter killed chronologically.
Nurse Mary is also the first woman to be killed by Dexter in the show.
While Dexter did not take a blood slide from Mary in the show, as he had not started that particular ritual yet, she was also his first blood slide within the novels continuity.
It is possible Nurse Mary is based on real life serial killer Kristen Gilbert, who was also a nurse who poisoned her patients. However, Gilbert killed with epinephrine, not morphine.
