NOTE: This article is about the DUSK incarnation of Nyarlathotep. For other versions of the character, visit this disambiguation page.

He was worthy, you know. And he accomplished so much... but then... you came along. You who were stronger. You who were faster. You... I like... better. Who did you expect at the end of all this? God? The Devil, perhaps? No... it's just... me.

How does it feel? Horrible, isn't it? But, wonderful, yes? [chuckles, then hisses] Who you were before is insignificant, who you are now is inconceivable. But here, you shall remain, 'till I have need of you again... for one must always reign beneath... Dusk. [laughs maniacally]
~ Nyarlathotep after corrupting Dusk Dude.

Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2018 indie FPS horror game DUSK.

He was voiced by Stephan Weyte, who also voiced Caleb in Blood.

Appearance[]

Nyarlathotep takes the form of a massive brown/orange monster covered in tentacles, and his body is covered in green holes and scars. His face consists of a massive gaping maw. When exposed to his weakness of light, the green scars turn red. According to Nyarlathotep, he has a thousand other forms.

Biography[]

Nyarlathotep comes from the Nameless City, a twisted dimension comprised of temples made of flesh and hideous torture chambers, enough for anyone to go mad simply for being close to them. Empowering the Nameless City requires humans as resources, so many that the concrete pillars holding the city in place are supported by an ocean comprised of blood. To obtain his human resources, Nyarlathotep opens a portal to the Pennsylvania town of Dusk through ancient ruins underneath it. There, he uses his powers to corrupt the residents, deforming them into hideous monsters. From the portal, the residents became obsessed with Nyarlathotep and worshipped him, offering him sacrifices from the weakest members of the established cult or people who ventured into the town.

The government forcefully walled off the town of Dusk to keep the cult inside and prevent anyone from discovering the horrible secrets it held. That was until a treasure hunter known as "Dusk Dude" finds a way over the wall in search of riches. In the town, Dusk Dude finds the cult and the sinister rituals they conducted to worship their god. Dusk Dude fights against the feral cult members, ultimately fighting his way to the portal leading to the Nameless City.

After defeating the cult's leader Jakob, Nyarlathotep reveals himself to Dusk Dude as the mastermind behind the cult's actions. Fascinated with Dusk Dude's power, he forces him to become his next servant. Dusk Dude refused and fought the Crawling Chaos. While invincible at first, the Dusk Dude weakened Nyarlathotep by shooting cracks in the ceiling that exposed light. Upon defeat, Nyarlathotep acknowledges Dusk Dude's strength and corrupts him with the same energy that the town of Dusk was cursed with, claiming that there must always be someone to reign underneath Dusk.

In a post-credits scene, Nyarlathotep taunts the player that they should pray not to encounter his other thousand forms.

Trivia[]

  • Nyarlathotep's appearance as a final boss might be a nod to Quake (from which DUSK was inspired), where the final boss was Shub-Niggurath, another deity created by H.P. Lovecraft.
  • Before Dusk Dude fights Nyarlathotep, there are numerous scribbles and graffiti scattered in the levels that hint at his presence, such as "The Chaos Crawls To Me" and "The Dweller in Darkness".
  • After the credits, Nyarlathotep claims to have a thousand other forms. This is also a nod to the original mythos, where Nyarlathotep had the ability to shapeshift.
