Eshe, my little pawn... you refused my help, and now I shall crush you! The creature you see before you is my true form! You will regret EVERYTHING!
~ Nyarlathotep as the Shining Trapezohedron if Eshe resists consuming all Elder Shards.

Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist of the 2017 Metroidvania indie game Sundered.

Biography[]

In an ancient subterranean city, the Eschaton worshipped rituals provided by a tall and slim mysterious stranger, who they called the Elder One. He offered to cleanse the world so humankind could begin anew. Granting them a holy stone called the Shining Trapezohedron, the Elder One instructed the Eschaton to create a portal to his realm, allowing them to pass through while he cleansed the world. However, the Valkyries wanted the Shining Trapezohedron to harness its power for themselves, prompting a war between the eldritch magic of the Eschaton and the machinery of the Valkyries. During the war, the portal was shattered, splitting into numerous shards that corrupted both races into monsters.

To neither the Eschaton nor the Valkyries' knowledge, the Elder One who the Eschaton worshipped as a god was the identity of Nyarlathotep, who was manipulating the Eschaton into opening the portal so he could engulf the whole world with eldritch spawn and descend it into madness. While he was sucked back through the portal when it shattered, Nyarlathotep bound his mind to the Shining Trapezohedron, allowing him to spread his thoughts and manipulate anyone who would find the Trapezohedron to continue the ritual.

Shining Trapezohedron Sundered

The Shining Trapezohedron.

In the present day, the Shining Trapezohedron was found by the nomad Eshe after she accidentally stumbled into the ancient city under a desert, consisting of monsters that were once the Eschaton and Valkyries. As the voice inside of the Trapezohedron, Nyarlathotep manipulates Eshe into gathering the seven shards so that he could corrupt her with his influences. For every shard Eshe collects, she can either follow the Trapezohedron's demands and consume the shards, making her abilities more powerful at the cost of her humanity. She could also use a Valkyrie incinerator to destroy the shards, giving bonuses to her base stats.

Endings[]

Depending on her actions that Eshe takes through the game, three different endings can occur:

  • Neutral Ending: Should Eshe use or destroy some of the shards, she encounters the imperfect form of Nyarlathotep within his sealed chamber in the Nether. Upon defeating him, a portal to the outside world opens, allowing Eshe to escape back to the desert. But to her horror, the Trapezohedron came to the surface with her, still containing the mind of the Crawling Chaos. The scene ends ambiguously as the Trapezohedron starts glowing and Nyarlathotep can be heard laughing.
  • Resist Ending: Should Eshe destroy all seven shards, she again encounters Nyarlathotep as the final boss. After defeating him, the Shining Trapezohedron berates Eshe for refusing its help and merges with Nyarlathotep, revealing him to be the Trapezohedron's true form. With only a Valkyrie cannon as her only weapon strong enough to damage him, Eshe destroys the mad god. With his plan ruined, the portal shatters, preventing the eldritch spawn from invading the Earth but also leaves Eshe trapped within the caves.
  • Embrace Ending: Should Eshe embrace all shards, a manifestation of Eshe's discarded humanity serves as the final boss. Upon defeating it, Eshe destroys her humanity and fuses with the Shining Trapezohedron, much to its delight. With the portal fully opened, Eshe bursts through the caves to the desert, allowing the world to be consumed by darkness.
