Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist of the 2021 indie survival horror video game The Shore.
He was voiced by Ares Dragonis.
Biography[]
Little is known about the origins of Nyarlathotep other than he lured many people to the mysterious island for his own schemes throughout history. Everyone who previously came to the island met their deaths either from the monstrous forces residing on it, or were driven to complete madness and killed each other.
A fisherman named Andrew was the next to arrive to the island after being separated from his daughter Ellie, believing she was taken by the monsters. While exploring the abandoned island, Andrew hears a mysterious voice, telling him that it can help Andrew find his daughter if he accomplishes a task for it. From there, Andrew is warped between the island to an eldritch landscape, soon finding a black triangular artifact. The shadow convinces Andrew that should he fully unlock the artifact's true powers, it will allow Andrew to find his daughter.
Andrew agrees to the dark shadow's demands and uses the artifact to advance through the island's eldritch landscape, fight off shadowy monsters, and solve puzzles. Eventually, Andrew goes to awaken the Great Old Ones Dagon and Cthulhu, the latter of which calls Andrew a fool for believing the Shadow before departing to exterminate humanity out of spite at being awoken.
Eventually, Andrew reaches Nyarlathotep in the middle of a large room with many human heads, the sons of the elder god. Andrew has to power up the artifact by shooting the eyes of the heads to make them glow whilst avoiding the monsters coming from their mouths. Once all the eyes are lit up, Andrew gives Nyarlathotep the artifact, who then unleashes Azathoth.
In a void in front of the dreaming Azathoth, Nyarlathotep plays visions of Andrew's life, such as his parents giving him up as an offering to the Great Old Ones for access to their realm. Andrew then sees a white figure in the form of his daughter, but before interacting with it, Nyarlathotep appears in the form of an expressionless white face. Nyarlathotep reveals to Andrew that he wanted to change reality for he grew bored with it, and chose Andrew as his pawn for he came to the island with a purpose unlike all who arrived before him. Additionally, he reveals Ellie never existed, as he fabricated Andrew's mind with false memories so Andrew would follow his commands and wouldn't lose focus like the other souls he lured to the island.
Enraged that the deity deceived him all along, Andrew declares that he will make Ellie exist. Nyarlathotep tells him that he can make her real if he interacts with her memory before Azathoth wakes up. Andrew then rushes towards Ellie's figure before the screen fades to black, leaving the ending ambiguous.
Appearance[]
As with many other interpretations of his character, Nyarlathotep is a master shapeshifter capable of taking a thousand forms. His true form, while not seen until the end of the game, is a pitch-black deity with a round body covered in tendrils. He has six humanoid arms and six insectoid legs that can contort around his body. His head resembles a cloak, with six teeth on top of it, ending with a swaying tentacle.
