Nyx is a major antagonist in the Megami Tensei franchise, specifically serving as one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Kouetsu Kirijo) of the Persona 3 sub-series within the Persona series.

Nyx serves as the game's final boss, though in terms of gameplay, the characters battle Nyx Avatar, an incarnation of her.
In the 90s, the Kirijo Group uncovered the existence of the Plumes of Dusk and Shadows—mysterious phenomena capable of bending the very laws of physics, space, time, and causality. Fascinated, they began extensive experiments to harness these powers. Kouetsu Kirijo, Mitsuru’s grandfather, alongside researchers like Shuji Ikutsuki, eventually unearthed an ancient text foretelling a catastrophe known as "The Fall." According to the prophecy, Shadows were the offspring of a primordial goddess, Nyx, who bestowed Night and Death upon the world. Death would act as her herald—the Appriser—ushering in the end of all life.
Rather than resist this fate, the Kirijo Group embraced the prophecy, viewing the Fall as a form of salvation. Their experiments culminated in gathering a vast number of Shadows within a secret facility, successfully awakening the Shadow linked to the Death Arcana. However, Eiichiro Takeba opposed the group's goals. He sabotaged the facility, prematurely halting Death's full emergence by splitting it into thirteen separate entities. Even fragmented, their mere existence caused the Dark Hour to manifest and Tartarus to rise.
After Nyx Avatar’s defeat, it dispersed into a silver light and rose toward the Moon. The Moon then fractured, and Nyx’s true form began descending. Her approach unleashed immense gravitational pressure, paralyzing SEES. Drawing upon the bonds forged through countless experiences and the collective will to live, the protagonist—strengthened by the power of Death and guided by Igor—awakened the World Arcana.
Ascending beyond Earth’s atmosphere into Nyx’s domain, the protagonist entered a vast black void scattered with floating stones. There, they confronted Nyx’s Core—a radiant, golden crystal wrapped in silver, wing-like appendages resembling hands. Empowered by the voices and hopes of SEES, the protagonist withstood Nyx’s relentless Death attacks. In a final act, they unleashed the Great Seal, halting the Fall and saving humanity.
