The One Radiant Thing, also known as ORT is one of the overarching antagonists in both the Fate and Tsukihime franchises. It is the Ultimate One of the Oort Cloud who was called by a dying Gaia to help it exterminate humanity in revenge for them outliving its corpse in a distant future. Due to having responded early, ORT ends up landing in South America in 5000 BC, and falls into a deep slumber awaiting "the promised time" when it will be properly awakened by Gaia's death wails. In Fate timelines, ORT continues to sleep peacefully; however, in the Tsukihime timelines, it is stated it will eventually wriggle towards awakening.
A different version of ORT, called Lostbelt ORT serves as the overarching antagonist of Fate/Grand Order: Cosmos In the Lostbelt: Golden Sea of Trees: Nahui Mictlan.
Background[]
ORT is an alien lifeform that landed on Earth before the Common Era, residing in South America.
It was known as a being that killed all who approached it instantly, no magus stepping into its territory having ever returned alive. In the 16th century, despite the known dangers, a group of seven Clock Tower magi, consisting of one Grand leading the group and six Brands, formed an expedition and ventured into the jungle.
Despite it being an unprecedented expedition in terms of the combined strength of the magi and the festive nature of their exploration camp showing great levity towards their task, only one returned alive to the Clock Tower, Astea of the Twelve Lords of that time, exclaiming, "The creature must still not be touched. No life on the planet is up to the task as of now. Wait for the next geologic period. We'll entrust hope to the new evolved life that will come after our extinction." Astea turned into living crystal before the onlookers.
After the incident, Brishisan, Director of the Clock Tower, gave ORT its name and the region of South America in which it resided was forbidden to humanity. Brishisan later stated, "Only the planet's screams will awaken ORT. It's hibernating nice and cozy in South America's underground. So you keep your hands off it. The planet will lose its anthroposphere if that thing starts moving." After it became known to the World of Magecraft, it became revered as a horror story to magi, believed to be a fairy tale by weaker bloodlines and taught as fact to stronger bloodlines. Modern families such as the Musiks used its name to scare children into behaving.
Across all timelines, there have been a few foolish attempts to kill or capture it, all of which have failed without ORT properly awakening (much like how one groggily smashes an alarm clock before going back to sleep). These failed attempts include the 5th Dead Apostle Ancestor (leading to ORT being awarded the seat in absentia), and an expedition of seven of the most powerful mages of the Mage's Association. As a result of these incidents, the Crystal Valley in which ORT resides has been marked as a forbidden land by all power players.
Tsukihime[]
Despite not being one of the Ultimate Ones that received Earth's SOS signal, ORT left its original world and landed in South America before the Common Era, accidentally arriving five thousand years too early in preparation for the Promised Time. The previous fifth Dead Apostle Ancestor sought to capture it at some point and was killed by it instead, and a number of agencies have tried dealing with it only to be annihilated. It was decided that it was to be named an Ancestor after it was discovered to have vampiric properties, taking the fifth spot of The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors. It has shown no current interest in damaging or invading the surrounding world, and it will not respond unless it is disturbed. It is theorized that it has closed itself off in its sanctuary until the Promised Time. It currently resides in a South American village.
ORT's identity as Type Mercury was originally called into question when Character Material calls it "Mercury(?)'s Ultimate One", implying it either is not Mercury's Ultimate One or is not actually from Mercury at all. But it is believed the Oort Cloud original pun, with Spider of Mercury and "Mercury(?)'s Ultimate One" in the Character Material isn't a coincidence. ORT arrived to earth in advance for the promised time when Gaia made its final death cry and called the Aristoteles to destroy all of humanity.
Fate/Grand Order[]
Background[]
ORT landed on Earth 66 million years ago (much earlier than it did in Proper History), its impact setting fire to the surface and damaging itself to the point where it went into slumber to heal. Before ORT's arrival, a previous meteor had impacted 300 millions years before the present. The microorganisms, fungi and bacteria within that meteor formed a symbiotic relationship with and empowered the ancestors species of Deinos, the theropods of Proper Human History, as Humans did not exist yet. Creating Malla, the collective goodwill of dinosaurian kind, its "Divine Filaments" spread across the supercontinent Pangea and bound it together in order to extend its Domain beyond America. Later, Malla would predict the arrival of ORT, and create Mictlan and its artificial sun in order to safely store the dinosaurs underground.
ORT's arrival forced the ancestor species of the deinos to escape to the underground space created by Malla, preventing their extinction. Millions of years later, the surface, the supercontinent Pangea, is still burning. The dinosaurs evolved into the Prime Species in charge of managing the underground world, becoming the Deinos. The Deinos survived through photosynthesis from the sunlight of Mictlan's sun but, 40 million years later, the Sun runs out a energy and dies out, forcing the Deinos to go into hibernation. Eventually, a new culture came to the world of Mictlan, built by Humans who at some point evolved and build cities in Mictlan, with Camazotz as their King. 20 million years later, 60 million year later after it first arrived, ORT heals from the damage it sustained and reawakens, and begins to wreak havoc across the planet. Unable to be defeated by them, Humanity commits a mass-sacrifice of their species in order to empower Camazotz to the point where he was completely unkillable. Being unable to die, Camazotz battles ORT and, after an unspecified amount of time later, manages to rip out ORT's heart and put ORT back to slumber in order to heal itself. Malla would then use the heart as fuel to power Mictlan's sun, awakening the deinos and allowing them to occupy Humanity's cities.
Olympus: Interstellar Mountainous City[]
ORT is mentioned by Rasputin as the only being on Earth that could possibly function as the Alien God's vessel. And it is present in the South American Lostbelt.
Nahui Mictlan: Golden Sea of Trees[]
James Moriarty warns Chaldea that the Alien God seeks to merge with ORT, and the moment she does Earth will lose. Daybit Sem Void seeks to awaken ORT and have it devour CHALDEAS to destroy the world. He claims this is fulfilling his role as a Crypter: to destroy the planet before everything is hollowed out.
When ORT does awaken, Chaldea summons every Servant they have ever met before and uses them to try and stop it from climbing Mictlan. But because of ORT's vampiric ability to copy the traits of beings it devours, it begins to take on Servant traits of its own as it defeats and devours the Servants. After its physical body is destroyed by U-Olga Marie and the Hume-Barrel Rayproof, it uses those assimilated Servant traits to summon itself as a Servant. The Grand Foreigner Servant ORT is defeated by Chaldea, but merely summons itself again in a stronger form; it is finally destroyed for good by Kukulkan, because, in her words, only ORT can defeat ORT.
